A Study on Recognition and Demands of Forest Interpretation Programs: Focused on Jinju City and Gyeongnam Region

        Nara Lee,Keun Young Huh,Jonghoon Park 한국인간·식물·환경학회 2017 인간식물환경학회지 Vol.20 No.4

The purpose of this study was to investigate the recognition and demands of forest interpretation programs. Questionnaire survey was carried out to estimate the awareness, necessity, future participation intent, experience, satisfaction and demands of forest interpretation programs with 100 residents living in Jinju city or Gyeongnam region. The data were subject to frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and path analysis. Overall 63% of respondents didn’t know forest interpretation programs, but 52% of respondents recognized the necessity of forest interpretation programs. 52% of respondents had the future participate intent of forest interpretation programs, and 38.3% didn’t know if they would participate. 74% of respondents had never experienced the programs. In the satisfaction, 80% of respondents who experienced showed neutral. Future participation intent was highly correlated with necessity as shown in the result of correlation analysis among awareness, necessity, future participation intent, and experience of forest interpretation programs. Also future participation intent in path analysis was estimated to be affected indirectly by experience and awareness as well as necessity. Enhancement of future participation intent would be achieved by increasing experience, awareness, and necessity of forest interpretation programs. According to the demands, forest interpreters were required to have the expertise to provide knowledge and information of forests. Attractive content for forest interpretation programs was in the order of recreational activities > forest conservation > education while the proper objective of forest interpretation programs was experience and interest > education > conservation and resource > public relation of forests and parks. Respondents preferred participation and experience the most as a style in selecting the programs. Key condition in selecting the venue was diversity > safety > connectivity > accessibility in order. There was no significantly different preference in proper participation duration or operation season for the activities of forest interpretation programs.

Review of state-of-the-art battery state estimation technologies for battery management systems of stationary energy storage systems

        Park, Seongyun,Ahn, Jeongho,Kang, Taewoo,Park, Sungbeak,Kim, Youngmi,Cho, Inho,Kim, Jonghoon The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2020 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.20 No.6

Lithium-ion batteries have recently been in the spotlight as the main energy source for the energy storage devices used in the renewable energy industry. The main issues in the use of lithium-ion batteries are satisfaction with the design life and safe operation. Therefore, battery management has been required in practice. In accordance with this demand, battery state indicators such as the state-of-charge (SOC), state-of-health (SOH), state-of-function (SOF), and state-of-temperature (SOT) have been widely applied. The use of these indicators ensures safe operation without overcharging and over-discharging. In addition, it can also help satisfy the design life. This paper presents a literature review of battery state indicators over the last three years and proposes the requirement of state-of-the-art battery state indicators. It also suggests future developments for battery management system (BMS) in stationary energy storage systems (ESSs).

Comparative analysis of energy intake and physical activity according to household type and presence of metabolic syndrome in middle-aged men based on data from the 7th Korea national health and nutrition examination survey (KNHANES) (2016-2018)

( Jonghoon Park ),( Yeonhee Park ),( Youngjun Lee ),( Jungwoo Lee ),( Seunghee Lee ),( Chulho Shin ),( Eun-sook Sung ) 한국운동영양학회 2021 Physical Activity and Nutrition (Phys Act Nutr) Vol.25 No.4

[Purpose] This study analyzed data from the 7th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2018) to compare the differences in energy intake and physical activity (PA) levels in middle-aged Korean men aged 40-59 years according to household type and the presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS). [Methods] Data from 2,266 young adults (aged >39 years and <60 years) were obtained from the KNHANES. We analyzed the differences in energy intake and PA levels according to household type and MetS. The presence or absence of MetS was determined by measuring waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, triglyceride, and HDL-C levels. [Results] Regarding total nutritional intake, no relationship with MetS was observed regardless of household type (interaction between MetS and household type: p = 0.875). No differences in total PA were observed between multiple- and single-person households (interaction between MetS and household type: p = 0.122). The relationship between MetS and MetS components according to nutritional intake showed that participants with a higher energy intake had a 27% lower prevalence of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (p < 0.05) and a 36% higher prevalence of high blood pressure (p < 0.01). The relationship between MetS and MetS components according to the PA level showed significantly reduced prevalence of MetS by approximately 39%, 35%, and 43% (p < 0.01, 0.01, and 0.001) in subjects who were somewhat active, active, and very active, respectively, compared to inactivity. [Conclusion] Middle-aged men showed no difference in nutritional intake and PA between multiple- and single- person households. However, the risk of MetS was significantly higher in participants with approximately 1.5 times the energy intake compared to the group with the lowest energy intake. Moreover, higher levels of PA had a marked positive effect on the risk factors and prevalence of MetS. Therefore, we suggest that reducing the total energy intake and increasing total PA are important for preventing MetS in middle-aged men regardless of household type.

Association between daily step counts and physical activity level among Korean elementary schoolchildren

( Jonghoon Park ),( Kazuko Ishikawa Takata ),( Sangjik Lee ),( Eunkyung Kim ),( Kiwon Lim ),( Hyungryul Kim ),( In Sook Lee ),( Shigeho Tanaka ) 한국운동영양학회 2016 Physical Activity and Nutrition (Phys Act Nutr) Vol.20 No.3

[Purpose] The purpose of the current study was to investigate steps per day (steps/d) and physical activity level (PAL) in Korean elementary school children having normal weight (normal-weight). We also clarified whether a gender difference exited between steps/d and PAL. [Methods] Children aged 9 to 12 y were recruited from two elementary schools located in different urban districts in Korea. The present study included 33 Korean children, of which 18 were normal-weight boys and 15 were normal-weight girls. During the same 1 week study period under free-living conditions the total energy expenditure (TEE) and step counts were estimated using the doubly labeled water (DLW) method and an accelerometer, respectively. We calculated PAL as the TEE/ resting metabolic rate. [Results] The range of PAL was 1.25 - 1.93 with a mean value of 1.57. None of the variables of energy expenditure was significantly different by sex. However, steps/d were significantly higher in boys than in girls. When adjusting regression analysis by gender, steps/ d were positively associated with PAL among all subjects (r = 0.56, P < 0.01). Furthermore, steps/d were positively associated with PAL in boys (r = 0.68, P < 0.01), but not in girls (r = 0.27, P = 0.34). [Conclusion] Our results suggest that locomotive activity may be the main contributor to the individual PAL differences for elementary school boys, while non-locomotive activity may be the main contributor for elementary school girls.

Estimation of appropriate capacity of ventilation system based on the air infiltration rate in Korean classrooms

        Jonghoon Park,Yongsung Jang,안영철,Seongir Cheong,이재근 대한기계학회 2008 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.22 No.4

The appropriate capacity of a ventilation system based on the air infiltration rate in Korean classrooms is investigated to obtain optimal design conditions for ventilation systems. Theoretical and the experimental analyses are performed to estimate the proper ventilation capacity with a consideration of the air infiltration, the indoor air quality, and the venti-lation rate. The air infiltr the range of 0.5-1.5 1/h, and the required venti-lation rate should be decided not by the contaminants (Formaldehyde and TVOC) emitted from the construction mate-rials but by the carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from human breath. The appropriate capacity of the ventilation system based on the air infiltration rate of the classroom for elementary schools is 50CMH and for middle and high schools is 800 CMH. The measured and the estimated values of CO2 concentrations are very similar and the modeling equation of CO2 concentration can be used as a reference for the proper estimation of ventilation rate in Korean schools.

Microfluidic Image Cytometry (μFIC) Assessments of Silver Nanoparticle Cytotoxicity

Jonghoon Park,Tae Hyun Yoon 대한화학회 2012 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.33 No.12

Cytotoxicity assessment of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was performed using MTT-based microfluidic image cytometry (μFIC). The LC50 value of HeLa cells exposed to AgNPs in the microfluidic device was estimated as 46.7 mg/L, which is similar to that estimated by MTT-based IC for cells cultured in a 96 well plate (49.9 mg/ L). These results confirm that the μFIC approach can produce cytotoxicity data that is reasonably well-matched with that of the conventional 96 well plate system with much higher efficiency. This μFIC method provides many benefits including ease of use and low cost, and is a more rapid in vitro cell based assay for AgNPs. This may aid in speeding up data acquisition in the field of nanosafety and make a significant contribution to the quantitative understanding of nanoproperty- toxicity relationships.

How can we estimate carbon emissions and reduction of buildings at the local government level in South Korea?

        Jonghoon Park,Sungjoon Kim 인간식물환경학회 2022 인간식물환경학회지 Vol.25 No.6

Background and objective: Carbon neutrality must be achieved across societal sectors through carbon neutral policies. Therefore, local governments, which realize the actual greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, must develop GHG reduction strategies. This study aims to present information on the GHG reduction of the building sector (BS) at the local government level, for the carbon neutrality by 2050 (CN). Methods: The gross floor area (GFA) of all buildings and the total floor area of household (HBs), business (BBs), and public buildings (PBs) and by 2050 were predicted using building and demographic information from Jeollanam-do. Buildings were classified as over or under 10 years old. GHG emissions projection by 2050 were combined the GFA prediction results with public information on building energy consumption (BEC). After adjusting the nationwide CN goal for the BS in Jeollanam-do, the pathways for two scenarios were to estimate GHG reduction. Results: HBs showed the steepest increase in GFA, while BBs and PBs showed a very modest increase. About 30% of HBs and BBs were under 10 years and about 70% were over 10 years. The HB's GHG emissions increased remarkably, reflecting the GFA results, while the emissions of BBs and PBs didn't raised much. GHG reduction targets by 2030 were calculated as 1.4, 0.7, and 0.35 million TOE for HBs, BBs, and PBs, respectively. Reduction Scenario 1 shows a straight-line path with a negative slope from 2023. Reduction Scenario 2 shows an increase in emissions after 2023, which begins to decrease from 2028, falling with a curved steep slope until 2035, followed by a very modest decline until 2050. Conclusion: This study calculated GHG emissions from the BS by 2050 using the latest information on BEC and GHG calculation guidelines. The method in this study helps establish regional/local GHG reduction targets, setting scenarios, and estimating GHG reduction.

      • Interpolation and Tracking of Rigid Body Orientations

Jonghoon Park 제어로봇시스템학회 2010 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2010 No.10

A method of interpolating and tracking rigid body motions in terms of its exponential coordinates is developed based on the differential of exponentials. The analytic closed-form expressions are provided for differential of exponential on SO(3) as well as its time-derivative. Complete methods for interpolating and tracking in terms of exponential coordinates of SO(3) are developed. In particular, interpolation is made with the boundary conditions including acceleration level. Reference acceleration is designed on SO(3) for linearized closed-loop dynamics in exponential coordinates.
