Microplastics (MPs) have been recently recognized as posing a risk to human health. The adverse health effects of MP exposure have been recently reported, especially via the oral exposure route. The present study investigated whether subacute (4 week) exposure to polyethylene (PE) or polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) MPs via gastric intubation caused immunotoxicity. Two different sizes of PE MPs (6.2 or 27.2 μm) and PTFE MPs (6.0 or 30.5 μm) were administered to 6-week-old mice of both sexes at 0 (corn oil vehicle control), 500, 1000, or 2000 mg/kg/day (n = 4/group). No significant differences were observed between groups in the major thymic or splenic immune cell populations, including thymic CD4+, CD8+, CD4+/ CD8+ T lymphocytes, and splenic helper T cells, cytotoxic T cells, and B cells. The ratio of interferon-gamma (IFNγ) to interleukin-4 (IL-4) in culture supernatants from polyclonally activated splenic mononuclear cells ex vivo (48 h) was dosedependently decreased in female mice that received small- and large-size PTFE MPs. The IFNγ/IL-4 ratio was also decreased in the female mice dosed with large-size PE MPs. The serum IgG2a/IgG1 ratio was dose-dependently increased in male and female animals dosed with small-size PE MPs, in female animals dosed with large-size PTFE MPs, and in male animals dosed with small-size PTFE MPs. The present study implies that immune functions could be affected in animals exposed to MPs via gastric intubation. These effects are dependent on MP size, MP dose, MP polymer type, and mouse sex. Further investigations with longer exposure periods could be necessary to more clearly define the immunotoxic effects of MPs.

그리드 컴퓨팅은 방대한 데이터 저장 공간과 고성능 연산능력을 요구하는 작업에 적합하다. 동적계획법(dynamic programming)은 방대한 크기의 동적 테이블(dynamic table)을 구성하여 최적해(optimal solution)을 찾기 때문에 그리드에서 수행하기에 적합한 작업이다. 본 논문에서는 동적 테이블을 구성하고 분산 배치하는 할당 정책을 제안한다. 그리고 동적계획법 기반의 어플리케이션을 그리드에서 효율적으로 수행할 수 있는 그리드 시스템 구조를 제안한다.

We suggest a wearable soft robot for post-stroke, hemiplegic patients’ finger rehabilitation and quantitative evaluations on the joint paralysis. The device consists of a pair of gloves. One measures finger positions of the normal side, and the other induces symmetric movements on the affected side by pneumatic force. Ten patients at Brunnstrom stage 3 and 4 from a local hospital participated in this study. They performed Rolyan Stacking Cones 10 times with and without the support of the soft robot. We measured subjects’ proximal interphalangeal angles and air pressures in the pneumatic glove during the exercise to monitor grab/release patterns. The soft robot helped open their paralyzed finger joints by more than 50 degrees on average regardless of Brunnstrom stages. We applied pattern recognition methods on the measurement to quantitatively evaluate the subjects. A support vector machine revealed a misclassification rate of 20%, implying that there were a considerable number of overlapping data sets near the boundary between Brunnstrom stages. K-means method with three clusters suggested a new subject group near the support vector machine border. Thus, we conclude that our wearable soft robot not only provides grab/release guides to post-stroke patients but also provides quantitative information on their finger paralysis supplementary to the existing qualitative assessments.
Gas-Pressure-Assisted Modified One-Step Deposition for Hybrid Perovskite Solar Cells

<P>In recent years, hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites have attracted much attention as promising light absorbers. Herein, the gas pressure during spin coating for a perovskite layer is introduced as a parameter for perovskite solar cells. We adopt gas pressure engineering to improve the perovskite film morphology without overgrown crystals and pin-holes. As a result, compared to 8.95% efficiency of conventional two step fabrication, perovskite solar cells based on gas-pressure-assisted method showed similar efficiency of 8.48% but increased the current density from 16.28 mA/cm(2) to 15.69 mA/cm(2), even though it reduced processing time and steps. These findings will provide important guidelines for the fabrication of low-cost perovskite solar cells.</P>
A Smart Bench Press Machine : Automatic Weight Control Sensitive to User Tiredness

In order to provide a safe free-weight-training environment to people without workout trainers, we suggest a smart bench press machine with an automatic weight control system sensitive to user tiredness. Physical weight plates on the machine are replaced with a hydraulic cylinder as a press load and the cylinder knob is coupled with a step motor to change its tensile force automatically in-between lifting exercises. Three subjects participated to verify the usability of the smart bench press machine. They were asked to lift a 6-RM press load 10 times with 3 different lifting conditions: 1) no assistance, 2) a human assistance, and 3) the automatic weight control. All subjects were not able to complete the 10 sets without assistance due to tiredness, but they finished the full sets under the two assistive conditions. Average lifting speeds under the automatic weight control condition showed the most consistent level. Normalized quasi-tension data based on surface electromyogram signals of both Pectoralis Majors revealed that the subjects maintained the target muscle activation level above 50% but not more than 80% throughout the 10 sets. Therefore, the smart bench press machine is expected to both keep pace with the lifting exercise and reduce risk of injuries due to excessive muscle tensions.
효소 생물자원을 이용한 농업환경폐기물 저감 기술의 국내 농업현장 적용을 위한 농업용 토양 특성 평가

최근 폐멀칭필름, 화학농약 등 농업 현장에서 발생하는 농업환경폐기물의 저감 필요성이 대두됨에 따라, 독일, 일본 등을 중심으로 미생물 또는 태양광 등에 의하여 짧은 기간에 친환경적 분해가 가능한 생분해성 플라스틱의 실용화 연구 및 산업화가 진행되고 있다. 우리나라에서도 지방자치단체를 중심으로 폐기물의 수거와 처리에 대한 지원 대책을 강구하고 있으며, 플라스틱의 생물학적 분해 기술에 대한 연구 개발 사례가 증가하고 있다. 폐효소를 이용하여 폐비닐을 분해하기 위해서는 효소가 실제 토양 환경 내에서 충분한 활성을 나타내어야 하며, 국내 농업용 토양 환경에서 플라스틱 분해 효소가 충분한 분해 효과를 나타내도록 토양의 입도, 배수성, 통기성 등 물리적 조건과 온·습도 및 pH, 염농도 등 화학적 조건에 따른 분해 성능을 검증하여, 효소 활성화를 위한 최적 토양환경 조건이 제시되어야 한다. 이에 따라, 본 연구에서는 국내 농업 현장에서 이용이 가능한 생분해 플라스틱 필름 및 효소 복합 소재를 개발하고 적용하기 위하여 국내 토양의 물리적 및 화학적 환경에 대한 다양한 조사를 수행하여 데이터베이스를 확보하였다. 또한, 지역별 입지조건과 다양한 대상 작물을 위한 농지를 모니터링 대상지로 선정하여 현장조사를 수행하고, 토양에 대한 물리, 화학적 특성을 평가하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 토대로 실제 다양한 토양환경을 고려하여 설계된 분해성능 검증 및 분해 촉진 성능 평가를 수행할 수 있을 것으로 판단되며, 국내 농업용 토양 특성에 적합한 폐비닐 분해 효소를 발굴하고, 효소 활성 극대화를 위한 최적 토양환경 조건이 제시될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
