<P>Transverse rumble strips were commonly installed on approaches to intersections, toll plazas, and horizontal curves. The main function is to alert drivers by creating noise and vibration. This TRS has been demonstrated to be effective in reducing traffic accident due to sleeping. However, there are some disadvantages in its utilization, such as traffic noise produced by TRS. The objective of this study was to quantify the level of traffic noise; to verify the effects of speed and TRS shapes. Two types of vehicles [sedan and minivan] were driven over four different patterns of TRS and over cement concrete pavement at four different speeds. Researchers measured the produce noise at 7.5m distance with 1.2 m height from center of the vehicle lane at each test section. Results indicate that vehicle type, speed, TRS shape affects created traffic noise. The sound level of Type A was statistically highest among others.</P>

Time-selective self-triggering water sampler, AUTTLE developed by Jin et al. (1999) has been improved in order to prevent pre-deposition of suspended sediments (SS) before sampling. By using two solenoids, the improved sampler is able to be moored or deployed with inclination. Its position is changed to horizontal position by activating the first solenoid, and then the endcaps of the sampling bottle are closed by the second solenoid that is driven three times to minimize possible failure of sampling. An external control unit for setting sampling time has been also constructed. Additionally, the electric circuit housing of the sampler has been modified to be detached from the sampling bottle when operating manually. Its performance has been confirmed through flume tests and a field experiment. It will serve as a valuable tool in the various fields of oceanography and environmental engineering, especially where seawater sampling synchronized at several sites and/or the information in storm period is important.

Purpose: To compare the evaluation results of faculties to those of Standardized Patients (SP) participating in a Clinical Performance Examination (CPX) administered at Ewha Womans University College of Medicine. Methods: The CPX was taken by 77 fourth year medical students. Cases and checklist were developed by the medical school consortium in capital area. Six cases were used and 24 SPs participated and evaluated the students’ performances. The whole session was recorded on videotapes so that 6 medical school faculties could analyze and evaluate the students performances as well. The results were compared and analyzed by SPSS package. Results: The agreement between the faculties and the SPs was relatively good (r=0.79), but not good enough. In every case, SPs gave higher marks than did the faculties. Clear disease entity cases like hepatitis and anemia showed better agreement than obscure clinical contexts such as bad news delivery . Better agreement was seen in the items of physical exam category (r=0.91), but the agreement was very poor in the items of doctor-patient (Dr-Pt) relationship category (r=0.54). The construction of checklist and the character of each evaluation item should influence the differences. Conclusion: More detailed guidelines and clear/specific evaluating items are necessary to improve the agreement rate. In certain categories like physical exam and brief history taking, the SP s evaluation can replace the faculties , but for complex contexts like Dr-Pt relationship.

Formate dehydrogenase (FDH), catalyzing the oxidation of the formate ion to carbon dioxide, is known as the stress protein in response to drought, low temperature and pathogen infection. To study the functions of FDH in poplar (Populus alba × P. glandulosa), we isolated a FDH cDNA (PagFDH1) and examined its expressional characteristics. The PagFDH1 is 1,499 base pairs long and encodes a putative 388 amino acid protein with an expected molecular mass of 42.5 kDa. The PagFDH1 protein has N-terminal mitochondria signal peptide and NAD+ binding domain. Southern blot analysis indicated that a single copy of the PagFDH1 is present in the poplar genome. PagFDH1 is expressed highly in the suspension cells (especially in the lag and early exponential phases) and moderately in roots, flowers and leaves. ABA-mediated enhanced expression of PagFDH1 in response to drought and salt stress treatments indicates that the gene product could play an important role in the development of stress resistant trees.
