Synthesis and characterization of thin films on magnesium alloy using a hydrothermal method

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Mg(OH)<SUB>2</SUB> films were synthesized on the surface of the AZ31 magnesium alloy using an alkaline hydrothermal method. The structures and compositions of the films grown at different treatment times were investigated. The results revealed that the films consisted of hexagonal nanosheets mostly aligned with the surface. The analysis of the composition and structure indicated that the films were composed of Mg(OH)<SUB>2</SUB> with (001) preferred orientation. The potentiodynamic polarization tests showed that the Mg(OH)<SUB>2</SUB> films could play an important role in improving the corrosion resistance as passive films. The morphology and structure of the films were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The compositions of the films were investigated using a scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy. The structure and orientation of the films were determined by X-ray diffraction. Potentiodynamic polarization tests were performed to characterize the corrosion behavior.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Mg(OH)<SUB>2</SUB> films on the surface of the AZ31 magnesium alloy were synthesized using an alkaline hydrothermal method. </LI> <LI> The results revealed that the films consisted of hexagonal nanosheets mostly aligned with the surface. </LI> <LI> Mg(OH)<SUB>2</SUB> films could play an important role in improving the corrosion resistance as passive films. </LI> </UL> </P>
Clinical implication and consistency of inter-arm blood pressure difference in general population

Background: There is limited data on clinical implication and consistency of serial measurement of increased inter-arm blood pressure difference (IIABPD) in general population. Methods: From May 2006 to April 2015, a total of 1650 patients (53 ±12 years old/71.2% males) have undergone serial pulse wave velocity and ankle brachial index (ABI) measurements (Median time interval: 12 months) with VP-1,000 (Omron) in Myongji health screening center. We evaluated the consistency of IIABPD over measurements and compared ABI and decrement of ABI according to IIABPD, which is defined as 10 mmHg or more of difference between systolic pressures of both arms. Results: The prevalence of IIABPD was 77 (4.7%) and 93 patients (5.7%) in index and followed measurement, respectively. There was significant correlation between index and followed IABPD (r=0.179, p <0.001). Although IIABPD of index measurement had significant correlation with IIABPD in follow-up (HR 5.53 [3.08-9.94 95%CI], p<0.001), the consistency rate of IIABPD was only 17 patients (22%) amongst 77 patients. When all of study population was divided into 4 groups according to increased IABPD as follows; No IIABPD, resolved IIABPD, newly developed IIABPD, consistent IIABPD group, ABI was significantly higher and the decrement of serial ABI was smaller in no or resolved IIABPD groups compared with newly developed or consistent IIABPD groups (Table 1). Conclusions: IIABPD of 10 mmHg or more was significantly associated with subclinical atherosclerosis. However, serial measurements revealed low consistency rate of IIABPD. These findings suggested the limitation of IIABPD as a simple marker for atherosclerosis.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Among the various causative factors involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), oxidative stress has emerged as an important factor. Phloroglucinol is a polyphenol component of phlorotannin, which is found at sufficient levels in <I>Ecklonia cava (E. cava</I>). Phloroglucinol has been reported to exert antioxidant activities in various tissues. Previously, we reported that the stereotaxic injection of phloroglucinol regulated synaptic plasticity in an AD mouse model. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of oral administration of phloroglucinol in AD. The oral administration of phloroglucinol for 2 months attenuated the impairments in cognitive function observed in 6-month-old 5X familial AD (5XFAD) mice, as assessed with the T-maze and Y-maze tests. The administration of phloroglucinol for 2 months in 5XFAD mice caused a reduction in the number of amyloid plaques and in the protein level of BACE1, a major amyloid precursor protein cleavage enzyme, together with γ-secretase. Phloroglucinol also restored the reduction in dendritic spine density and the number of mature spines in the hippocampi of 5XFAD mice. In addition, phloroglucinol-administered 5XFAD mice displayed lower protein levels of GFAP and Iba-1 and mRNA levels of TNF-α and IL-6 compared with vehicle-administered 5XFAD mice. These results demonstrated that phloroglucinol alleviated the neuropathological features and behavioral phenotypes in the 5XFAD mouse model. However, information about the clinical, laboratory findings and in-vivo skin test of pediatric chronic urticaria is limited. Objectives: To analyze characteristics of chronic urticaria in childhood (≤ 18 years) and to compare its severity between children and adults. Methods: A total number of patients in childhood and adult was 136 and 878, respectively. We assessed clinical manifestations, autologous serum skin test (ASST), and laboratory findings such as anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) and total immunoglobulin E (IgE). Disease severity was estimated by urticaria activity score (UAS) and maximum level of medication to abrogate wheal and pruritus. Results: 136 patients (male/female ratio 1.2) with mean age of 9.2 years (range 0.9-18) were included. ASST was positive in 72.4 % (55/76), and positive ANA was observed in 47.6% (30/63), and 14.8% (16/108) of the patients had elevated level of IgE. The patients in childhood had significantly lower UAS compared with the patients in adults (p<0.001). During treatment, maximum level of medication in childhood was lower than that in adults (p<0.001). Conclusion: Chronic urticarial in childhood reveals mild severity. It shows lower UAS and needs lower level of medication to achieve abrogation of symptoms than adults.

Background: Melanonychia is well-known predisposing condition of acral lentiginous melanoma. Furthermore, many patients with melanochia is visiting dermatologic department due to publicity activities for this risk by mass media. But, the basic clinical data for Korean melanonychia is lacking. Objectives: To identify basic clinical data for Korean melanonychia Methods: From January 2002 to August 2014, total 282 patients with melanonchia in PNUH and PNUYH were included in this study. We reviewed the medical records, clinical photos, dermoscopic photos, and histopathologic results. In clinical findings, duration of disease, the number and the location of affected nail, and possible causing factors were identified. Results: Average duration of melanonychia from onset to visiting was 34.0 months. Eighty five (29.6%) patients have melanonychia on a single nail and thumb is the most frequently affected nail. Thirty of them were underwent skin biopsy. Nine (3.2%) patients were diagnosed with malignant melanoma, and the rest of them were diagnosed with benign conditions. Among them, 80 (28.4%) patients had subungual hemorrhage, 42 (14.9%) patients had ethnic type pigmentation, and 25 (8.9%) patients were related to extrinsic causes such as minor trauma or occupation. Conclusion: This study could be used as basic data of Korean melanonychia for dermatologists and public information and additionally for the further large-scale studies.
