The purpose of this study is to obtain some useful informations for improving the campus forest landscape of Chungnam National University. Based on two kinds of surveyed data relating campus forest landscape resources and the respondents visual preference ratings, geographical features and physical characteristics of forest landscape are investigated. Twenty-four photos were taken for visual preference survey. With a total 100 respondents, relative scenic beauty of each forest scenes could be explained in terms of influence factors of physical characteristics. Three variables in model could be accounted for 65% of total variables in perceived forest scenic beauty. Results indicated that campus forest landscape must be improved greatly in the scenic views and so on. To improve current situation, some alternatives including improvement scheme and cost have to be proposed newly.

Development of a Quantitative Model for Estimating Scenic Beauty of Recreation Forests

Hyung Sop Song 한국산림과학회 1993 한국산림과학회지 Vol.82 No.1

Since 1988, Forestry Adminstration of Korea has established recreation forests to meet the increasing needs for forest recreation. However, there have been very few researches for forest scenic beauty assessment which could provide the basic criteria to develop and manage recreation forests properly. The objective of this study was thus, to develop a scenic beauty estimation model based on several on-site, on-photo descriptor. This study was divided into three stages. The first involves obtaining quantitative estimates of observer`s scenic beauty preferences for recreational purposes. Quantitative measures are needed so that mathematical prediction equations can be derived in stage two. These prediction equations describe scenic beauty preferences in terms of forest environment components. In the final stage the quantitative descriptors including forest environment components are regressed to model forest scenic beauty estimation. 62 photo(5×7$quot;) were taken for the study. Buildings, road. other manmade elements were excluded on the photo. Each photographs was independently judged by 4 groups, with a total 1,063 observers participating in this study. The ratings were scaled using the procedure developed by the method of Daniel and Boster(1976) to derive independent scenic beauty esimates for each forest scene. The results from this research were as follows. 1. The ratings analysis results of 3 professional respondents who worked in ferestry, architecture, environment fields were different in terms of visual preference for each photographs. Respondents in forestry field generally preferred managed forest stand with large DBH, while respondents in environment field rated high scores for natural forest stands. Similar trends were observed in the student group in terms of their majoring fields. 2. The results of rating scale analysis indicate that respondents` sexual difference affects visual preference for forest scenic beauty. Similarly, with different forest visit frequency and community type in childhood, people tend to rate their preference differently. 3. The respondents` rating scale of relative scenic beauty of near-view forest scenes can largely be explained in terms of physical characteristics of the landscape. In the regression model to predict forest scenic beauty, bare ground area and slash area among forest physical charactistics are represented negative esthetic effects, while DBH, number of trees per hectare, sky area, small road showed positive esthetic effects. These 6 variables in the model can be accounted for 74% of total variance in perceived forest scenic beauty. These forest scenic beauty model seems to be well suited to explained forest physical characteristics related to esthetic preference for near-view forest scenes. With this study result, it is believed that the effects to make and manage scenic forests for outdoor recreation can be objectively formulated.

지역주민의 자연환경태도 수준이 휴양림 개발 지각에 미치는 영향

        송형섭(Hyung Sop Song) 한국산림과학회 1999 한국산림과학회지 Vol.88 No.2

The purposes of this study were to investigate the influence of local residents` nature environment attitudes to recreation forest development impact perceptions and to examine application possibility of nature environment attitude to resolution information of recreation forest management conflicts. 30 items of residents` perceptions and opinions were designed from previous tourism impact studies. The new environmental paradigm(NEP) was used to measure local residents` nature environment attitudes. In October 1995, 204 questionnaires were obtained from interview survey in local residents` villages near two recreation forests. Generally most local residents perceived low economic effects and negative environment impacts for recreation forest development. Nature environment attitude levels were significant differences due to socioeconomic variables of local residents, specially high in age, education level and influenced their perceptions toward recreation forest development impacts. The results suggested that the nature environment attitudes could be provided a useful referential framework in resolution of recreation forest management conflicts.

야외휴양을 위한 산림풍치의 (山林風致) 영향인자 구명

        송형섭(Hyung Sop Song),김성일(Seong Il Kim),조응혁(Eung Hyouk Cho) 한국산림과학회 1992 한국산림과학회지 Vol.81 No.3

The main purpose of this study- is to obtain information on the factors influencing forest scenic beauty in order to make and manage scenic forest of recreation areas. 62 slides were taken for the studs. Each photograph was independently judged by college students in 10 different major fields, with a total 264 observers after reliability` test in the study. The ratings were scaled using a computer program developed by Brown & Daniel(1990). The results of rating scale analysis indicate that respondents` major field difference affects visual preference for forest scenic beauty. Similarly, with different sexual, forest visit frequency, and community` type in childhood, people tend to rate their preference differently. The respondents` rating scale of relative scenic beauty of near-view forest scenes can largely be explained in terms of forest physical characteristics of forest landscape. Bare ground area and stash area are represented negative esthetic effects, while DBH, number of trees per hectare, sky area showed positive esthetic effects. These 6 variables in the model can be accounted for 74% of total variance in perceived forest scenic beauty. With this study result, it can be concluded that forest physical characteristics are significantly related to visual preference for near-view forest scenes.

납엽송 간벌 임분의 공간 이미지 분석

        송형섭,명재갑,박민우,손종은,이선 충남대학교 농업과학연구소 2000 농업과학연구 Vol.27 No.1

The main purpose of this study is to obtain spatial image information toward forest thinning process in Larix forest stands. Thirteen different alternatives were simulated to visualize on the basis of actual thinning work photos. The options were illustrated as photos produced by photoshop program. Each alternatives were evaluated by forest visitor group with total 244 respondents after reliability test. Spatial images of 13 thinning photos were measured by 12 semantic differential scale as broad-narrow, ordered-tangled, friendly-unfriendly, monotonous-divers, dry-refreshing, relieved-stifling, healthy-sickly, uniform-scattered, dead-alive, opened-closed, bent-straight, and beautiful-ugly. In comparison with thinning stands and natural stands, thinning works were visual improvement effects of spatial images. Seemingly, this trend is due to definite form beauty, straight and clear length from of coniferous forest. As can be expected, slash and downwood were negatively related to improvement effects of spatial images. The 60% ratio of stem/tree height and 450-950 trees/ha was positive in attraction of spatial images. Results indicate how to conduct forest thinning system for spatial images on Larix forest stands.
