Recently, owing to the increasing demand for psychotherapists as well as the large number of social organizations that issue private certifications, lacking sufficient training or hands-on education, many art therapists obtain certification in a relatively short period of time and begin work in the clinical field, which triggers societal doubt regarding the professionalism of art therapy perse. Thus, demand for authoritative, relevant and specific information about the professionalism and expertise of fine art therapists also is increasing.
This inquiry deals with how art therapists progress in terms of becoming a professional, what the crucial elements of expertise needed in the clinical field are, and what this profession means for their own lives. The subjects of the study consist of ten (10) art therapists recommended by their peers. The period of study was two and a half years, from August 2011 to March 2013, and consisted of in-depth interviews, shadowing, and other data collection techniques. Data analysis was accomplished by repeating the process of analysis, integration, and breakdown.
By examining the unique experiences of each art therapist and by their questioning and seeking answers to their own existence, this study intended to clarify the qualitative change in the values, perspectives, and lives of art therapists themselves from an existential point of view. In other words, this study was conducted using an ontological approach, which focuses on the existence or reality of each art therapist, rather than on any specific research methodology or identification of any professional traits and qualifications.
The following is a description (conceptualization) of the typical professional growth process (experience) of art therapists on their 'journey' towards professionalization. First, (they believe) they were destined to become art therapists, having personally experienced the powerful force of fine art on personality development, especially childhood experiences as an unconscious motivator of adult behavior. Their childhood experiences influenced their choice of profession and formed their foundation to understand their clients. Second, they devoted themselves to learning and practice; enthusiastically studying theories of psychotherapy and related interdisciplinary fields; integrating theory and reality through clinical case experiences; adopting various forms of engagement in order to avoid making/repeating mistakes; and nurturing broad and diverse perspectives for understanding clients through lively case conferences. Third, they had to overcome the ‘crests and troughs’ of their own confusion and frustrations. They were frustrated often in experiencing the limitations of fine art therapy. They worked very hard to find their own identity as professionals, distinguishing between ‘art’ and ‘therapy’ as well as between ‘art therapy’ and ‘related interdisciplinary therapies.’ Fourth, they accepted the uncertainty of being human. They came to see clients as they presented themselves, became immersed in the moments, and learned to understand the need for patience. Fifth, they lived their own lives, applying their knowledge and skills to clients. Ontologically speaking, they learned that they themselves are uncertain and incomplete as human beings and that therapy is a process through which ‘the therapist and the client learn and grow together.’
The process of development of an art therapist is not just obtaining knowledge and mastering the requisite techniques, but also maturing through self-doubt, self-investigation, introspection and reflection. The core professionalism of art therapists as defined and identified through this study is not just theoretical or technical knowledge but practical experience obtained through reflection and introspection of their own uncertainties. Their ‘practical professionalism’ was neither conceptual nor theoretical knowledge but ‘embodied knowledge’ earned from repeated and accumulated clinical case explorations and experiments.
Thanks to this, they could proceed without being bound by so-called manuals, and consult with their clients with ample flexibility rather than following strict procedures that they were taught. Case by case, they could form their own brand of creative fine art therapy based on their own unique practical knowledge, without being constrained by any predetermined or dogmatic therapeutical fine art media or technique.
This practical professionalism did not come overnight from the accumulation of fractional theoretical knowledge, but evolved from their individual lifetime experiences. Art therapists may graduate from the same educational program, but no therapies of any two of them are likely to be the same, because each of them tends to develop unique therapies through the lifetime evolution of their professional growth, just as they master fine art in their own way by overcoming the uncertainties they experienced. So their professionalism was a sort of a ‘composing process’ that continues throughout their lifetime.
The professional nature of an art therapist may be summarized by the following four findings: First, fine art therapy professionals have the skills, knowledge and abilities to use fine art for diagnosis and therapy. Second, they emphasize ontological or existential formation of a relationship based on conversation. Third, they mature through self-analysis, self-awareness, and self-acceptance as skilled art therapists. Fourth, they practice caring based on understanding. These findings are, at the same time, the core of the relationship between the client and the art therapist. This profession is not ‘limited’ by any fine art technique, but is a creative combination of ‘curative power of fine art’ and ‘communicative engagement’ leading to a “path of live-and-let-live.”
This study managed to identify the professionalism of fine art therapists as practical knowledge intertwined with the personal maturity process of the individual art therapist. It explored how they developed both their professionalism and personal experiences at the same time, presenting some clues on how art therapists should live their own life. This study may be differentiated from other research which merely explains some development phases of professionalism of art therapists or from other quantitative approaches to the professionalism of art therapists, in that it focused on the dynamics of qualitative change in the identity (personality) of the art therapist as a human being.
This study aims to better understand the professional aspects of fine art therapy and intends to present meaningful reference material and important basic data for training and educating would-be art therapists, opening a new horizon for the education of fine art therapists. It also aims to help experts further develop their professional abilities and establish their individual professional identity.
