Children should not just be placed in inclusive setting but should be engagement in ongoing classroom activities and routines for the qualitative inclusion of young children with disabilities. Therefore, the improving engagement supporting the child in the inclusive settings were considered important.
The purpose of this study was to analyze how the curriculum modification for young children with disabilities in an inclusive setting would influence engagement, engagement level, engagement type in the free choice activities.
This study investigated the intervention effects through a multiple baseline design across children. The teacher provided the curriculum modification during the free choice activities. To applicate curriculum modification, The intervention package consisted of four steps to modify curriculum.
In the first step, The researcher assessed the current participation level of the young children with disabilities after two teacher orientation sessions. In the second step, The researcher planned curriculum modification through physical environmental modification, social environmental modification, activity modification, and material modification. The third step involved the implementation of the planned curriculum modification, and the fourth step offered feedback. Those steps were carried out repetitively, and the ending point of intervention was decided based on a peer micronorm. Generalization was performed during the hours of free choice activities in the afternoon. Observations were made of generalization maintenance four weeks after the intervention was over and of intervention maintenance six weeks after the intervention was over. Data were collected using interval recording systems and the percentages of occurrence were obtained. The children were observed during free choice activities, using 15-second interval recoding system. Each the experimental session was observed for 10minutes.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows;
First, the curriculum modification procedures were found to be effective in improving the engagement of the children. The increased engagement of the young children were maintained and generalized into the situations where the intervention was not implemented.
Second, the curriculum modification procedures were found to be effective in improving the higher engagement level of the young children. The higher engagement level of the children were maintained and generalized into the situations where the intervention was not implemented.
Third, the curriculum modification procedures were found to be effective in improving the diverse engagement types of the young children. The diverse engagement types of the children were maintained and generalized into the situations where the intervention was not implemented.
These results show that the curriculum modification was effective in improving the engagement, engagement level, engagement type of the children with disabilities in inclusive classrooms. Curriculum modification can be essential in the successful inclusion of the young children with disabilities in inclusive settings.
Thus the significance of the study can be found in that it checked the possibility of young children with disabilities's approach toward the general curriculum by applying curriculum modification to the inclusive environment and suggested curriculum modification as an effective and practical support plan applicable to the inclusive situation in which a general kindergarten curriculum was run.
This finding suggests that the ingredients in successful application of the systematic instructional procedures in inclusive settings may be related to how teachers organize instructional trials for the young children with special needs. The effectiveness of the applications of curriculum modification to ongoing routines in inclusive settings is also discussed.
