        Regeneration mechanism of CeO2-TiO2 sorbents for elemental mercury capture from syngas

        The characteristics of mercury desorption on spent CeO2-TiO2 (CeTi) sorbents were investigated to improve the cyclic regeneration removal activity. Mercury was significantly released in the form of elemental mercury at temperatures ranging from 250 to 280 oC. Mercury desorption had a significant correlation with regeneration temperature, but was independent of the heating rate and regeneration conditions. The optimal regeneration temperature was 500 oC. The CeTi sorbents could be easily restored by simple heating and exhibited superior activity over several capture- regeneration cycles. The amount of released mercury almost equaled the adsorbed mercury on the surface of the CeTi sorbent, indicating that most of the adsorbed mercury was released during the heating process.

        Vibration control of high-speed trains self-excitation under-chassis equipment by HSLDS vibration isolators

        To minimize the self-excitation effects of the equipment on the carbody, a high static and low dynamic stiffness (HSLDS) vibration isolator is proposed by connecting a negative stiffness unit and a positive linear stiffness spring in parallel. The nonlinear stiffness of the HSLDS isolator can be designed according to the needs of any target stiffness curve. A vibration test is applied to obtain the vibration acceleration of the under-chassis equipment. A rigid-flexible coupling multi-body dynamic model of a high-speed train is established which considers the elastic vibration of the carbody and the self-excitation of the under-chassis equipment based on the tested result. Different connection methods of the under-chassis equipment including rigid hanging, vibration isolation theory (VIT) hanging, dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) hanging and HSLDS hanging are applied and their effects on the carbody vibration and ride quality are investigated. The simulation results reveal that the proposed HSLDS vibration isolator can effectively isolate the self-excitation of the under-chassis equipment from the carbody and enhance the ride quality of the high-speed train.

        Passive control of railway vehicle car body flexural vibration by means of underframe dampers

        To suppress vertical flexural vibration of a railway vehicle car body, a new passive control method by mounting dampers on the longitudinal beams of the car body underframe is proposed. The method is firstly studied by an Euler-Bernoulli beam model using Green’s functions, then it is further verified by a nonlinear dynamic model of the vehicle. Results show that the car body flexural vibration can be noticeably reduced by this method. It is better to mount the damper near the car body centre. The higher damping coefficient of the damper, the more effective in decreasing the car body first vertical bending vibration. The higher the rigidity of the damper bracket and rubber bush, the better performance of the damper. It is found that when mounting six dampers at proper positions, the damping coefficient of each damper is 1.33×10 7 N·s/m, even if the first vertical bending frequency of the studied car body is only 7.2 Hz, a very good ride quality will be achieved when the vehicle runs at 250 km/h.

        Identification and Functional Characterization of R3 MYB Transcription Factor Genes in Soybean

        In Arabidopsis, trichome formation is regulatedby a MYB-bHLH-WD40 (MBW) transcriptional activatorcomplex, which can activate the expression of GLABRA2(GL2) and R3 MYB genes. GL2 is required for trichomeformation, whereas R3 MYBs inhibit trichome formation byblocking the formation of the MBW complex, thus inhibitingthe expression of GL2. By using the amino acid sequence of theArabidopsis R3 MYB transcription factor TRICHOMELESS1(TCL1) to BLAST the soybean (Glycine max) protein database,we found that there are a total of six R3 MYB genes insoybean, namely Glycine max TRICHOMELESS1 through 6(GmTCL1-GmTCL6). By generating transgenic plants, wefound that trichome formation in soybean plants overexpressingeach of the GmTCLs remained largely unchanged, and theexpression of putative GL1 and GL2 genes in the transgenicplants was unaffected. However, all the GmTCLs interactedwith GLABRA3 (GL3) in transfected Arabidopsis protoplasts,expression each of the GmTCLs in Arabidopsis inhibitedtrichome formation, and the expression levels of GL1 andGL2 were greatly reduced in the Arabidopsis transgenicplants. Moreover, phenotypic complementary analysis showedthat GmTCL1 is functionally equivalent to TCL1. Takentogether, these results suggest that GmTCLs are functionalR3 MYBs, however, they do not regulate trichome formationin soybean.

        Experimental study on ZnO-TiO2 sorbents for the removal of elemental mercury

        ZnO-TiO2 sorbents synthesized by an impregnation method were characterized through XRD (X-ray diffraction), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and EDS (Energy dispersive spectrometer) analyses. An experiment concerning the adsorption of Hg0 by ZnO-TiO2 under a simulated fuel gas atmosphere was then conducted in a benchscale fixed-bed reactor. The effects of ZnO loading amounts and reaction temperatures on Hg0 removal performance were analyzed. The results showed that ZnO-TiO2 sorbents exhibited excellent Hg0 removal capacity in the presence of H2S at 150 oC and 200 oC; 95.2% and 91.2% of Hg0 was removed, respectively, under the experimental conditions. There are two possible causes for the H2S reacting on the surface of ZnO-TiO2: (1) H2S directly reacted with ZnO to form ZnS, (2) H2S was oxidized to elemental sulfur (Sad) by means of active oxygen on the sorbent surface, and then Sad provided active absorption sites for Hg0 to form HgS. This study identifies three reasons why higher temperatures limit mercury removal. First, the reaction between Hg0 and H2S is inhibited at high temperatures. Second, HgS, as the resulting product in the reaction of mercury removal, becomes unstable at high temperatures. Third, the desulfurization reaction strengthens at higher temperatures, and it is likely that H2S directly reacts with ZnO, thus decreasing the Sad on the sorbent surfaces.

        Suppression of abnormal chattering of a high-speed EMU carbody

        A carbody chattering phenomenon accompanied by bogie hunting movement was investigated. The online test results showed that the vehicle at a large tread conicity state exhibited insufficient stability when running at higher speeds, causing the hunting frequency of the bogie to continuously increase, approach the diamond-shaped deformation modal frequency of the carbody, consequently causing the carbody to chatter. To improve the running stability of the vehicle, to suppress the carbody chattering, a two-step progressive optimisation method that combined analytical optimisation, simulation optimisation to optimise the parameters of the anti-yaw damper was proposed. Furthermore, the effect of optimisation was experimentally verified. Results showed that after optimisation, the critical speed of the vehicle under the condition of worn wheel was significantly enlarged, the bogie exhibited no obvious hunting motion, carbody chatter was significantly alleviated, both the ride quality, the curve passing performance were improved.

        Modelling Uncertainties and Sensitivity Analysis of Landslide Susceptibility Prediction under Different Environmental Factor Connection Methods and Machine Learning Models

        The utilization of different connection methods between landslides and environmental factors introduces uncertainty in landslide susceptibility prediction (LSP). Investigating and identifying the characteristics of this uncertainty and determining more suitable connection methods are of significant importance for LSP. This study uses original 12 environmental factors data as well as calculated data from five connection methods, namely, probability statistics (PS), frequency ratio (FR), information volume (IV), index of entropy (IOE), and weight of evidence (WOE), as model input variables. Then, four machine learnings logistic regression (LR), Bayesian networks (BN), support vector machines (SVM) and C5.0 Decision Trees (C5.0 DT) are combined with the calculated data and the original data to create 24 unique combinations of connection methods and models. Under these 24 combinations, the uncertainty analysis of LSP modeling is conducted, using Huichang County of China as an example. The analysis entails accuracy assessment, statistical analysis of landslide susceptibility indexes (LSIs), distribution patterns of LSIs and sensitivity analysis of the two uncertainty issues. The results show that: 1) LSP accuracies of the FR-, IV- and IOE-based models are comparable, but are lower than those of the WOE-based models, with those of the PS-based models being the worst. WOE has better nonlinear connection performance than the other methods. 2) LSP accuracies of individual models are slightly lower than those of coupled models, but their modeling efficiencies are higher than those of coupled models. 3) The machine learning is more sensitive than the connection method for LSP. In short, WOE-C5.0 DT has the lowest LSP uncertainty while a single machine learning can produce satisfied LSP results with high modelling efficiency.

        A modal frequency optimization approach for a fully-equipped car body of high-speed trains

        The tubular structural car body of high-speed trains with lightweight design generally results in a low diamond deformation modal frequency, which deteriorates significantly both the lateral and vertical vibrations of the car body. To increase the diamond deformation modal frequency of the car body, the structural optimization and modal sensitivity optimization of the car body based on sensitivity analysis are proposed. The former starts with the analysis of the mode shape deformation characteristics; in the latter case, the modal strain energy verification is considered and the influence of the threshold values of sensitivity on the modal frequency optimization are studied. Results show that by increasing the spacing of the inner and outer panels of the side wall from 47 mm to 65 mm and optimizing the thicknesses of 16 components of the car body, the diamond deformation modal frequency of the fully-equipped car body can be enhanced from 8.7 Hz to 10.31 Hz, while ensuring the lightweight requirement without loss in car body strength.

        Dissecting the meteorological and genetic factors affecting rice grain quality in Northeast China

        Background The Northeast Plain of China, which is an important region for the production of high grain quality rice in China. However, the grain quality of the rice produced varies across this region, even for the same cultivar. Objective In order to explore the meteorological factors that have the greatest infuence on quality and the transcriptional level diferences between diferent cultivars and diferent locations at grain flling stage. Methods We grew eight rice cultivars in three locations in Northeast China during two growing seasons (2017 and 2018). We recorded meteorological conditions, including air temperature, air temperature range, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) during the grain-flling stage of each cultivar, and analyzed the grain quality of those eight cultivars. Results Across all eight cultivars, meteorological factors had a stronger efect on eating quality than genotype, while genotype had a stronger efect on milling quality. Of the three environmental factors assessed, PAR was signifcantly correlated with the most grain quality traits. Using RNA-sequencing analysis, we identifed 573 environment-specifc DEGs (Diferentially Expressed Genes), and 119 genotype-specifc DEGs; 11 DEGs were responsive to genotype×environment interactions. These DEGs were involved in many key metabolic processes. Conclusion Our results indicated that interactions among environmental factors, especially PAR, afected rice quality in Northeast China. Further analyses of the DEGs identifed herein may provide useful information for future breeding programs aiming to develop high grain quality rice varieties suitable for cultivation across Northeast China.
