<P>In cold pulse experiments in J-TEXT, not only are rapid electron temperature increases in the core observed, but also steep rises in the inner density are found. Moreover, some evidence of acceleration of the core toroidal rotation is also observed during the non-local transport process of electron temperature. These new findings of cold pulse experiments in J-TEXT suggest that turbulence spreading is a possible mechanism for the non-local transport dynamics.</P>
Imaging x-ray crystal spectrometer on EAST
Shi, Yuejiang,Wang, Fudi,Wan, Baonian,Bitter, Manfred,Lee, Sanggon,Bak, Jungyo,Hill, Kennith,Fu, Jia,Li, Yingying,Zhang, Wei,Ti, Ang,Ling, Bili Published jointly by The Institute of Physics and 2010 Plasma physics and controlled fusion Vol.52 No.8
<P>A high-resolution imaging x-ray crystal spectrometer is described for implementation on the EAST tokamak to provide spatially and temporally resolved data on the ion temperature, electron temperature and poloidal plasma rotation. These data are derived from observations of the satellite spectra of helium-like argon, Ar XVII, which is the dominant charge state for electron temperatures in the range from 0.4 to 3.0 keV and which is accessible to EAST. Employing a novel design, which is based on the imaging properties of spherically bent crystals, the spectrometers will provide spectrally and spatially resolved images of the plasma for all experimental conditions, which include ohmically heated discharges as well as plasmas with rf and neutral-beam heating. The experimental setup and initial experimental results are presented.</P>

A new high-resolution tangential imaging X-ray crystal spectrometer (TXCS) is described for implementation on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) to provide spatially and temporally resolved data on the toroidal plasma rotation velocity and on the ion and the electron temperature. These data are derived from observations of the satellite spectra of heliumlike argon (Ar XVII). The TXCS will provide data for all experimental conditions, which include ohmically heated discharges as well as plasmas with radio-frequency (RF) waves and neutral-beam heating. The latest experimental results show that lower hybrid waves (LHW) induce a co-current change in a toroidal rotation of up to 45 km/s in the <i>L</i>-mode plasma core region. A modification of the toroidal rotation develops on the extended plasma region and a long time scale (≥1 s). The experimental setup and the initial experimental results are presented.

A diagnostic neutral beam (DNB) has been installed on the HT-7 tokamak for the measurement of charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS). The H_α-light Doppler shift spectroscopy from the drifted duct is measured to determine the components of the neutral beam. The fractions of neutral beam species are investigated under a wide range of arc voltages and extraction high voltages of the beam aimed to the optimized species fractions for the CXRS applications. A magnet ring is used to improve the magnetic property of the ion source. The result shows that the full-energy component fractions increase from 19 to 25 percent with optimization of the beam operation, but with a dramatic increase of the water component. There are nine optical fiber channels observing one section of the beam simultaneously for this spectroscopy, which provides information of the power profiles of the beam. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the beam profile is 8 cm, as measured by using the spectroscopy.

The trapping of runaway electrons into local magnetic mirrors in a toroidal magnetic field has been observed in slide away discharges in the HT-7 tokamak. When the discharges went into the slide-away region with Parail-Pogutse instabilities, strong oscillations in the hard X-ray flux and in the electron cyclotron emission are observed. The runaway electrons are trapped into the local magnetic mirrors when they are pitch angle scattered by the anomalous Doppler resonance effect.

<P>The temporal-spatial structures of plasma flows and turbulence around tearing mode islands are presented. The experiments were performed using Langmuir probe arrays in the edge plasmas of J-TEXT tokamak. The correlation analyses clearly show that the flows have similar structures of <I>m</I>/<I>n</I> = 3/1 as the magnetic island does (<I>m</I> and <I>n</I> are the poloidal and toroidal mode numbers, respectively). The sign of the potential fluctuations for the flows inverses and the powers significantly reduce at <I>q</I> = 3 surface. Approaching to the last closed flux surface for the magnetic islands, the radially elongated flow structure forms. The flows are concentrated near separatrix and show quadrupole structures. The turbulence is concentrated near X-point and partly trapped inside the magnetic islands.</P>
Development of signal analysis method for the motional Stark effect diagnostic on EAST

<P>A pilot single-channel Motional Stark Effect (MSE) diagnostic has been developed on EAST since 2015. The dual photo-elastic modulators (PEM) were employed to encode the polarization angle into a time-varying signal. The pitch angle was related to the ratio of modulation amplitude at the second harmonic frequency. A digital harmonic analyzer (DHA) technique was developed for extracting the second harmonic amplitude. The results were validated with a hardware phase lock-in amplifier, and is also consistent with the software dual phase-locking algorithm.</P>
