Taiwan's 'Internet Enko' Behavior and Adolescent Girls

        YAO, Chung-Yuan,CHANG, Sue-Chung 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2012 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.18 No.2

The term, “Internet Enko” is derived from 'enjokosai', which means assisted dating in Japan, where teenage girl students consider it as part-time work to make money. In Taiwan, use of the Internet for deception, exploitation, and malicious behavior has affected society negatively. Many teenagers now believe that “Internet Enko”, which is a type of sexual transaction undertaken via the Internet, is a matter of individual choice and an acceptable way to make money. These young people feel no shame in mentioning to others their intention to enroll in “Internet Enko” lists. Unfortunately, the negative consequences of such activities can have grave consequences for those involved and society as a whole. In this article we seek to identify the fundamental causes of Internet enko, why it is prevalent in Taiwan, and suggest preventive measures to reduce or eliminate it. We analyze four spheres that this problem impacts-family, school, society, and the government-in the hope of providing some solutions to deal with it.

A Novel Modulation Method for Three-Level Inverter Neutral Point Potential Oscillation Elimination

Yao, Yuan,Kang, Longyun,Zhang, Zhi The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2018 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.18 No.2

A novel algorithm is proposed to regulate the neutral point potential in neutral point clamped three-level inverters. Oscillations of the neutral point potential and an unbalanced dc-link voltage cause distortions of the output voltage. Large capacitors, which make the application costly and bulky, are needed to eliminate oscillations. Thus, the algorithm proposed in this paper utilizes the finite-control-set model predictive control and the multistage medium vector to solve these issues. The proposed strategy consists of a two-step prediction and a cost function to evaluate the selected multistage medium vector. Unlike the virtual vector method, the multistage medium vector is a mixture of the virtual vector and the original vector. In addition, its amplitude is variable. The neutral point current generated by it can be used to adjust the neutral point potential. When compared with the virtual vector method, the multistage medium vector contributes to decreasing the regulation time when the modulation index is high. The vectors are rearranged to cope with the variable switching frequency of the model predictive control. Simulation and experimental results verify the validity of the proposed strategy.

Hydraulic conductivity estimation by considering the existence of piles: A case study

        Yuan, Yao,Xu, Ye-Shuang,Shen, Jack S.,Wang, Bruce Zhi-Feng Techno-Press 2018 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.14 No.5

Estimation of hydraulic parameters is a critical step during design of foundation dewatering works. When many piles are installed in an aquifer, estimation of the hydraulic conductivity should consider the blocking of groundwater seepage by the piles. Based on field observations during a dewatering project in Shanghai, hydraulic conductivities are back-calculated using a numerical model considering the actual position of each pile. However, it is difficult to apply the aforementioned model directly in field due to requirement to input each pile geometry into the model. To develop a simple numerical model and find the optimal hydraulic conductivity, three scenarios are examined, in which the soil mass containing the piles is considered to be a uniform porous media. In these three scenarios, different sub-regions with different hydraulic conductivities, based on either automatic inverted calculation, or on effective medium theory (EMT), are established. The results indicate that the error, in the case which determines the hydraulic conductivity based on EMT, is less than that determined in the automatic inversion case. With the application of EMT, only the hydraulic conductivity of the soil outside the pit should be inverted. The soil inside the pit with its piles is divided into sub-regions with different hydraulic conductivities, and the hydraulic conductivity is calculated according to the volume ratio of the piles. Thus, the use of EMT in numerical modelling makes it easier to consider the effect of piles installed in an aquifer.

      • A 20–40 SECOND PROCESS FOR SYNTHESIS OF MULTI-WALLED CARBON NANOTUBES

        YUAN-YAO LI,TING-CHI LIU,CHIH-CHE HSIEH,MASAKI SAGEHASHI,AKIYOSHI SAKODA 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2006 NANO Vol.1 No.2

We report on a 20–40 s process for growing aligned, uniformed, high purity multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) using an alcohol lamp burner. With an appropriate catalyst precursor concentration, MWNTs can be grown on a Co-coated 304 stainless steel mesh under incomplete combustion conditions at 680–700°C. The process provides a rapid, easy, economic and safe method for the formation of carbon nanotubes. We suggest that the proposed method be considered as an educational kit for college or high school level experiments.

      • Molecular Analysis and Expression Patterns of the 14-3-3 Gene Family from Oryza Sativa

Yao, Yuan,Du, Ying,Jiang, Lin,Liu, Jin-Yuan Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2007 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.40 No.3

The ubiquitous family of 14-3-3 proteins functions as regulators in a variety of physiological processes. Eight rice 14-3-3 genes, designated OsGF14a through h, were identified from an exhaustive search of the genome database. Comparisons of deduced amino acid sequences reveal a high degree of identity among members of the OsGF14 family and reported Arabidopsis 14-3-3 proteins. A phylogenetic study indicates that OsGF14s contain both $\varepsilon$ and non-$\varepsilon$ forms, which is also confirmed by a structural analysis of OsGF14 genes. Furthermore, transcripts of OsGF14b, OsGF14c, OsGF14d, OsGF14e, OsGF14f and OsGF14g were detected in rice tissues. Their different expression patterns, the different effects of environmental stresses and plant hormones on their transcription levels, and the different complementary phenotypes in yeast 14-3-3 mutants not only indicates that OsGF14s are responsive to various stress conditions and regulated by multiple signaling pathways, but also suggests that functional similarity and diversity coexist among the members of OsGF14 family.

      • A Multicast Search Scheme Based on Bipartite Graph Matching Model

Yuan Yao,Zhang Dalin,Wang Qing,Shi Jinglin 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Signal Processing, Image Vol.8 No.11

This paper proposes an efficient multicast search scheme based on bipartite graph matching model, aiming at one of the most important problems in the multicast service, how can the wireless network track and locate the mobile uses in the idle state, under the tight bandwidth and delay constraints,. By quantifying the location uncertainty of mobile users with Shannon's entropy, the scheme adopts the LZ78 compression algorithm to design location update scheme and predict the location probability, in order to reduce the cost of location update. The multicast search system need to guarantee the maximum total probability that each user resides at the assigned paging area, for the purpose of an optimal performance on both expected paging delay and paging cost. Therefore, the bigraph-based multicast paging scheme (BMPS) firstly builds the bipartite graph model of multicast search problem, through converting the location probability into weight of the edge. BMPS decides the optimal allocation between the mobile users and location areas, which is mainly achieved by the maximum weight perfect matching in bipartite graph, while modifying the weights dynamically. Simulation results show that BMPS yields a low search delay as well as a low search cost, and reduces the impact of user collision.
