        Structural and rheological properties of pectic polysaccharide extracted from <i>Ulmus davidiana</i> esterified by succinic acid

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The present study was carried out to investigate the physicochemical and structural properties of pectic polysaccharide extracted from <I>Ulmus davidiana</I> (UDP) and to determine the physicochemical, structural, and rheological properties of esterified UDP with succinic acid (ES-UDP). The results indicated that UDP had high amounts of galacturonic acids and various neutral sugars, such as galactose, rhamnose, and glucose. UDP was identified as a low methoxyl pectin, consisting of 1,4-linked α-<SMALL>D</SMALL>-Gal<I>p</I>A (the main backbone chain), supported by the results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction, and 1D Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In the FT-IR and XRD, no difference was detected between UPD and ES-UDPs. However, <SUP>1</SUP>H and <SUP>13</SUP>C NMR spectra revealed that the new ester bonds were formed between a hydroxyl group of UDP and a carboxyl group of succinic acid during esterification. In the steady shear rheological analysis, the consistency index (K) of ES-UDP was significantly higher than that of UDP and increased significantly with increasing concentration of succinic acid. In the dynamic rheological analysis, the tan <I>δ</I> values of all ES-UDP solutions were significantly lower than those of the UDP solution.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Pectic polysaccharides from <I>Ulmus davidiana</I> were obtained by hot water extraction. </LI> <LI> Esterification of UDP was produced by esterification with succinic acid. </LI> <LI> Esterification affected structural and physicochemical properties of UDP. </LI> <LI> Esterification of UDP had higher rheological properties compared to UDP. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Electrochemical and Raman Spectroscopy Analysis for Dand L-Tryptophan-b-Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complexes

        An enantioselective recognition of D- and L-tryptophan (Trp)-b-cyclodextrin (CD) inclusion complex was performed using electrochemical and FT-Raman spectroscopic analysis. From the electrochemical analysis, the selectivity coefficient (KDL) of b-CD inclusion complexes was found higher than that of the D- and L-Trp in phosphate buffered saline (PBS, pH=7.0) solution. The percentage of enantioselectivity (I%ee) for peak current of D-Trp-b-CD inclusion complexes was observed higher than that of L-Trp-b-CD inclusion complexes in PBS solution. From Raman spectroscopy, chemical shift difference (D, cm-1) for the C=C stretch, ring vibration, and ring breathing of D-Try-b-CD inclusion complex were observed higher than that of L-Trp-b-CD inclusion complex. The electrochemical and Raman spectroscopic analyses were found very useful for chiral detection of racemic amino acid in the presence of b-CD.

        Microencapsulation of gallic acid through the complex of whey protein concentrate-pectic polysaccharide extracted from <i>Ulmus davidiana</i>

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The objectives of this study were to (1) prepare gallic acid loaded microcapsules coated with single whey protein concentrate (WPC) and complexes of WPC-pectic polysaccharide extracted from <I>Ulmus davidiana</I> (UDP) using spray dryer and (2) evaluate structural, physicochemical, and storage properties of these microcapsules. To produce complexes of WPC-UDP, three different concentrations (1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 g UDP per 30 g WPC) of UDP were used. Results showed that microcapsules coated with WPC-UDP had significantly higher encapsulation efficiency than microcapsules coated with WPC. The moisture contents of microcapsules ranged from 0.30 to 2.64% and decreased with an increase in UDP concentration in wall materials. The particle morphology of each microcapsule became smoother and more spherical, when the concentration of UDP was increased. The increased particle sizes of microcapsules coated with complex of WPC-UDP were indicated by creating a thicker layer by the formation of electrostatic interactions between anionic reactive sites of UDP and small cationic reactive sites of WPC. The electrostatic interactions between wall materials were confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy spectra analysis. Microcapsules coated with WPC-UDP complexes showed higher stability with lower release of encapsulated compounds when they were stored at different temperatures (4, 20, and 40 °C) for 20 days than microcapsules coated with WPC. The release profiles of gallilc acid showed that microcapsules coated with WPC-UDP complexes released less amounts of gallic acid than microcapsules coated with single WPC in gastrointestinal conditions (pH = 1.2).</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Gallic acid loaded microcapsules coated with complexes of WPC-UDP produced. </LI> <LI> Encapsulation efficiency of microcapsules with complexes of WPC-UDP was higher. </LI> <LI> Microcapsules coated with WPC-UDP had smooth surfaces, no pores, and no wrinkles. </LI> <LI> Release of gallic acid became lower with increasing the concentration of UDP. </LI> <LI> Microencapsulation of gallic acid using WPC-UDP complexes was an efficient method. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        A Comparative Analysis of Habitability Aspects of Temporary Shelters for Disaster Victims between South Korea and the U.S.

        본 연구의 목적은 한국과 미국의 미디어 자료를 통해 주요 재난 발생 이후 공급된 이재민 임시주거시설 현황을 이재민의 거주성 관점에서 비교분석하여 국내 시사점을 파악하는 것으로 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국의 지진겸용 이재민 임시주거시설은 내진설계가 취약한 시설이 지정되어 2차 여진 후 시설 일부 붕괴, 대피의 장기화로 인한 문제점 등 이재민의 안전성, 편리성, 쾌적성측면에서 문제점이 나타나 시설 지정과 관련된 기준과 거주성 측면이 고려된 지침개발이 필요하다. 둘째, 대홍수로 인한 재해가 많은 미국의 이재민들 또한 임시주거시설에서 사생활 침해와 안전성에 대한 문제점을 겪었으나, 트레일러나 조립식 주택 등 이미 제작된 주거유형 공급으로 보다 안전하고 쾌적한 환경을 제공한 점이 주요 차이점으로 나타났다. 셋째, 시설의 비위생성과 이로 인한 이재민 건강 문제는 한국과 미국의 임시주거시설에서 공통적인 주요 문제로 나타났는데, 이러한 점을 향후 계획적 측면에서 고려해야 할 것이다. The purpose of this study was to examine habitability aspects of temporary shelters provided for disaster victims between South Korea and the U.S. by analyzing the mass media content. First, Korea s temporary shelters(earthquake) are designated as facilities with weak seismic design, it had led to problems with safety, convenience, and comfort, so should be developed guidelines considering criteria and habitability of facility designation. Second, since catastrophic disasters often occurred in the U.S., evacuees had to stay in mega-shelters and went through the trouble due to the invasion of privacy and the lack of safety, but additional options, such as trailers and manufactured homes, were available for providing disaster victims with a safe, comfortable environment. Third, the unsanitary and unhealthy condition was considered as a common major problem of temporary shelters in both countries, which needs to be carefully addressed in the space planning.

      • Digital ulceration due to the change of hand microvasculature induced by rheumatoid arthritis

        Background: Severe Raynaud’s phenomenon enough to make digital necrosis is a rare manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis(RA) without other evidences of overlapped systemic sclerosis. Here we report a case of a severe Raynaud’s phenomenon with finger tip ulceration and gangrene in uncontrolled RA patient. Case Report: A 54-year-old male with 8-year history of taking weekly methotrexate 7.5 mg for RA visitedour cardiovascular surgery department complaining of 2-week history of ulceration of left third fingertip with Raynaud’s phenomenon. Physical examination revealed tenderness, swelling, and limitation of movement in bilateral wrist, 2nd & 3rd MCP and PIP joints. The ulcerative lesion in left 3rd fingertip was combined with bluish color change. He had normal bilateral radial and ulnar pulses. Left forearm arteriography revealed localized hypervascularity of RA affected joints and multiple occlusions at interosseous arteries and digital arteries, especially most severe in third finger. We increased the dosage of methotrexate to 12.5 mg/week, additionaly preiscribed methylprednisolone 4 mg/day and tadalafil. We strongly recommended quitting of smoking. After 2 months, the ulcerated lesion in fingertip was improved and arthritic joint pain was resolved. Conclusions: In uncontrolled RA activity, deprivation of distal blood flow induced by the shunt like filling of the veins through hypervascularized region in severely affected arthiritic joints, can result in Raynaud’s phenomenon and digital gangrene.

        자폐스펙트럼장애 아동의 치료개입시기에 영향을 미치는 요인 : 후향적 분석

        본 연구의 목적은 자폐스펙트럼장애 아동의 부모가 자폐증상을 인지한 이후, 보다 빠른 치료적 개입시작에 영향을 미치는 요인을 파악하는 데 있다. 연구대상은 B 대학병원에 내원한 만 2세부터 만 6세 사이의 자폐스펙트럼장애 아동 170명을 대상으로 하였다. 연구방법은 빈도 및 기술통계분석, 독립표본 t-검정, 상관관계분석, 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과, 아동이 다른 아이들과 다름을 인지한 시기는 평균 생후 20개월 시점인 것으로 확인되었고, 치료를 처음 시작한 연령은 35.5개월로 아동의 증상을 인지하고 치료시작까지 걸리는 시간은 평균 14.5개월 소요되는 것으로 확인되었다. 영향요인 분석 결과, 아동의 일상생활능력 중 사회성과 부모상호작용 중 지시성이 낮고, 상동행동적인 문제가 심하며, 모의 학력이 더 높을수록 치료적 개입이 보다 조기에 이뤄지는 것을 확인하였다. 이에 영향을 미치는 요인들이 자폐스펙트럼장애 아동의 원활한 치료를 위해 활용되도록 제언하였다. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that affect the initiation of therapeutic intervention after parental awareness of autism symptom in children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD). We studied 170 children with ASD from 2 to 6 years old who visited B National University Hospital. The research methods were frequency, descriptive statistical analysis, independent sample t-test, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. According to the results, when the average age child was about 20.8 months, the parents recognized the child s autism symptoms and the average age of starting intervention was 35.5 months. The average time to start therapeutic intervention after parents recognized the child s autism was 14.5 months on average. The timing of intervention for children with ASD was faster as the less sociality in the daily life area of the children, the lower the direction among the parent interactive behavior scale, the more severe the symptoms of stereotypic behavior patterns and the higher the mother s educational background of the children. It was suggested that the factors affecting the initiation of therapeutic intervention be used for the early intervention of children with ASD.

      • 지진재해 대비 일본 네리마 구 대피거점 현장조사를 통한 국내 계획지침 개선방안 연구

        The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of evacuation site in Nerimagu, Japan through the field study and suggests the implication on the planning aspects of the domestic planning guideline. The results were as follows: 1) Planning guideline of Nerimagu was highlighted the role of the government and local residents in minimizing disaster damage and providing sustainable operation of the evacuation sites. 2) Nerimagu has prepared the planning guideline in terms of habitability of disaster victims and evacuation site based on the experiences and problems that occurred during the past disasters. Specific space planning guidelines were presented by division the types of vulnerable people, these spaces are planned in advance before the disaster, and local residents continually trained to prepare for the use of these spaces. In conclusion, domestic guideline needs to provide the role of the persons in the evacuation site, and it is necessary to consider the problems such as accessibility and invasion of privacy, which are being raised in the domestic disaster scene.
