      • Comparative Epidemiology of Suicide in South Korea and Japan: Effects of Age, Gender and Suicide Methods

        <P> Background: Suicide is one of the leading causes of mortality in both South Korea and Japan. Aims: The study aims to compare the descriptive epidemiology of suicide over the last two decades (1985-2006) and to explore the conditions associated with the different distribution of suicides in both countries. Methods: Age-standardized suicide rates were obtained from the OECD Health Data 2009. Age-specific suicide rates for the age groups were calculated from the WHO Mortality Database. Suicide methods were identified based on ICD-10. Results: Through 1980-2000, Japan showed consistently higher suicide rates compared to Korea. However, from the mid-1990s, Korea showed an acute increase of suicides and finally surpassed Japan; the age-standardized suicide rate of Korea increased from 10.2 (per 100,000) in 1985 to 21.5 in 2006, while it slightly increased from 18.4 to 19.1 in Japan. The highest age-specific suicide rate was observed among Japanese men aged 45-64 years and Korean men aged over 64 years. The increase of elderly suicides among Korean women was notable. The gender ratio increased in Japan and decreased in Korea, respectively. The preferred suicide methods were hanging and pesticide poisoning in Korea and hanging in Japan. Because of the limited number of observations, hypothesis testing of specific risk factors was not possible. Conclusions: Age and gender distribution of suicide rates differed considerably between the two countries. Welfare protection throughout the life course in both countries, and pesticide regulation in Korea would be helpful in reducing the burden of suicide mortality in both countries, even if the social values could not be changed in a short time. </P>

        Zero-anaphora resolution in Korean based on deep language representation model: BERT

        It is necessary to achieve high performance in the task of zero anaphora resolution (ZAR) for completely understanding the texts in Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and various other languages. Deep-learning-based models are being employed for building ZAR systems, owing to the success of deep learning in the recent years. However, the objective of building a high-quality ZAR system is far from being achieved even using these models. To enhance the current ZAR techniques, we fine-tuned a pretrained bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT). Notably, BERT is a general language representation model that enables systems to utilize deep bidirectional contextual information in a natural language text. It extensively exploits the attention mechanism based upon the sequence-transduction model Transformer. In our model, classification is simultaneously performed for all the words in the input word sequence to decide whether each word can be an antecedent. We seek end-to-end learning by disallowing any use of hand-crafted or dependency-parsing features. Experimental results show that compared with other models, our approach can significantly improve the performance of ZAR.

        RAR: Real-Time Acoustic Ranging in Underwater Sensor Networks

        <P>As a core component of underwater localization, accurate acoustic ranging is quite challenging because of the harsh characteristics of underwater environments (e.g., refraction and reflection). To enhance ranging accuracy, ranging schemes employing a ray tracing model and a sound speed profile have been proposed; however, the existing schemes require numerous ray tracing iterations to perform ranging estimation within a certain range of accuracy. This renders the solutions that they generate impractical for real-time localization. In this letter, we propose a novel ranging scheme called real-time acoustic ranging (RAR). To reduce computational overhead while maintaining reliable accuracy, RAR exploits the property of ray pattern locality, whereby spatially proximate rays exhibit similar patterns. The results revealed that RAR can ensure a better tradeoff between accuracy and computational overhead than a state-of-the-art solution.</P>

        국내 기업 사례에서 직무순환이 인사고과 점수와 핵심인재 선정에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구

        본 연구는 국내 기업에서 핵심인재 경력개발의 일환으로 실행되고 있는 직무순환이 인사고과점수와 핵심인재 선정에 미치는 영향을 파악하고자 실시되었다. 직무순환의 효과를 검증하기 위하여, 대기업 G사에 근무하고 있는 과장 이상 관리자총 990명에 대해 학력, 직책, 근속년수와 함께 인사고과점수와 핵심인재 선정 여부를 포함하는 평가 자료를 수집하여 분석하였다. 상관관계 분석에서는 직무순환빈도를 나타내 주는 직무평균 근무년수와 수행평가 점수 및 핵심인재 선정이 유의미한 관계를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 중다회귀분석결과, 연구 대상자의 직책과 근속년수는 인사고과점수에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 요인이었으나 학력과 직무평균 근무년수는 유의미한 영향 요인이 아닌 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과, 인사고과 점수와 직무평균 근무년수가 핵심인재 선정에 영향을 미치는 주요 요인인 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 직무순환이 인사고과점수에는직접 영향을미치지 않으나, 포괄적인 평가 방식을 통해 이루어지는 핵심인재 선정에는 영향을 미치는 주요 요인이라는 것을 시사하고 있다. This study examined the effect of job rotation on performance evaluation and candidate selection in talents management by investigating the career development program of the G company. This study analyzed the data of 990 managerial level employees and the data consisted of three parts: the demographic information, job information, and evaluation results for each individual, In particular, evaluation information included the results of performance evaluation as well as potential evaluation encompassing leadership , personality, relationship , competencies, etc. In this study, the length of service per job indicated the number of job rotation that each employee had experienced. As a result of regression analysis, employees' duties, the total length of service have significant influence on performance evaluation scores. Regarding the logistic regression analysis about the effective factors of candidate selection in talent management, performance evaluation was the most influential factor, and the length of service per job, educational background, and employees' duties were also significant. The results of this study implied that job rotation would be influential and useful to foster talented leaders in this organization.

        A 4×32-Channel Neural Recording System for Deep Brain Stimulation Systems

        In this paper, a $4{\times}32$-channel neural recording system capable of acquiring neural signals is introduced. Four 32-channel neural recording ICs, complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs), a micro controller unit (MCU) with USB interface, and a PC are used. Each neural recording IC, implemented in $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology, includes 32 channels of analog front-ends (AFEs), a 32-to-1 analog multiplexer, and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The mid-band gain of the AFE is adjustable in four steps, and have a tunable bandwidth. The AFE has a mid-band gain of 54.5 dB to 65.7 dB and a bandwidth of 35.3 Hz to 5.8 kHz. The high-pass cutoff frequency of the AFE varies from 18.6 Hz to 154.7 Hz. The input-referred noise (IRN) of the AFE is $10.2{\mu}V_{rms}$. A high-resolution, low-power ADC with a high conversion speed achieves a signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) of 50.63 dB and a spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 63.88 dB, at a sampling-rate of 2.5 MS/s. The effectiveness of our neural recording system is validated in in-vivo recording of the primary somatosensory cortex of a rat.

        Bicritical behaviors observed in coupled diode resonators

        We have investigated bicritical behaviors of unidirectionally coupled diode resonators having a period doubling route to chaos. Depending on the dynamical states of the drive subsystem, the response subsystem showed a dynamical behavior other than that of the uncoupled system. The experimental results agreed well with the results obtained from the simulation of unidirectionally coupled logistic maps and oscillators. A new type of scaling behavior and a power spectrum of the hyperchaotic attractor appearing near a bicritical point were also observed.
