Tapered Optical Fiber Couplers Fabricated by Droplet-Based Chemical Etching

<P>This paper presents a fabrication method for 2 x 2 twisted fiber-optic directional couplers based on biconical low-loss tapered optical fibers using a two-step wet-etching technique with hydrofluoric acid-based droplets and surface tension-driven flows. The droplet-based wet etching of optical fibers allows us simple and cost-effective fabrication of tapered fibers and multiports directional couplers. The simulation results agree well with the experimental observations on the propagation losses, which can be monitored in real-time by measuring the transmitted optical powers during the chemical etching process. The fabricated 2 x 2 fiber-optic directional coupler shows wavelength-insensitive operation within the telecommunication C-band with an excess insertion loss of less than 0.5 dB.</P>

The objective of this study was to develop a computer-based finger-tapping system and to investigate whether the system is effective for evaluating motor function by performing pilot tests of the effects of three interventions, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), peripheral sensory stimulation (PSS), and PSS combined with tDCS (PSS + tDCS), on the movement of the affected hand in stroke patients. The developed system consists of two parts, the finger-tapping input system and finger-tapping analysis software. The finger-tapping input system can detect the states of four buttons and transmit these states to the finger-tapping analysis software, which measures the reaction time. Three stroke patients participated in an experimental session to test the effects of each intervention on motor performance. Each session included three blocks for the determination of (1) baseline of motor performance (Base), (2) the motor performance after each form of stimulation (Pre), and (3) the motor performance following motor training and rest (Post). The results showed that the mean response times for all blocks (Base, Pre, and Post) did not differ significantly with tDCS and PSS, but significant decreases were found between Base and Post and between Pre and Post. In addition, there was no significant difference among the interventions at Pre; however, PSS + tDCS facilitated considerably greater training effects than tDCS or PSS at Post. The developed system was able to evaluate motor function through motor training after a combination of PSS and tDCS. In the near future, we plan to apply the developed system to more patients with relatively good motor function to extend our findings to a general outcome, and expect that these results could be used to design an appropriate rehabilitative approach.
미국 수정헌법 2조와 자연권 사상 : 무기소지권의 역사․사상적 배경과 목적

The Second Amendment the U.S. Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free States, the right of the people of to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." The Founding Fathers believed that the right to possess arms was so necessary that they included it in the Bill of Rights in 1791. This article contains two distinct but interrelated theses. One is the English origins of the right to keep and bear arms, especially focusing upon two political philosophers, William Blackstone and John Locke. Another is the historical evidence surrounding the Revolutionary War and the adoption of the Second Amendment of the Constitution. The Founding Fathers believed that the right to possess arms had a fundamental purpose, recognizing those essential rights of life, liberty, and property which inhered in Anglo-Saxon freedom, and which Americans brought with them from the mother country. They considered this right as the paramount right by which all other rights could be protected. Furthermore, they saw this right the last resort of the people if the checks and balances established in the Constitution ever failed to protect the right of the people from tyranny. In sum, the right to possess arms was an inalienable natural right for self-defence serving as a deterrent against government oppression, thus should be respected as a crucial to the maintenance of freedom even in the future.

It is not coincidental that the ideas in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were espoused less than a decade after Blackstone's Commentaries on the laws of England was first published in England. In this respect, the correlation between the philosophy of America's founding documents and the Commentaries is worthy of careful examination. While much has been written regarding the influence of Blackstone on the various aspects of early American law, this article mainly focused upon the influences of Blackstone in the areas of natural law and the right to arms for self-protection, which became the foundation of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Numerical simulation is performed for a bubble inkjet process, in which droplet ejection is driven by an evaporating bubble. The liquid-vapor and liquid-air interfaces are tracked by a level set method which is modified to include the effects of phase change and bubble compressibility and is extended to treat the contact angle condition at an immersed solid surface. The whole process of bubble inkjet is simulated without employing a simplified bubble growth model. The present computation demonstrates the inkjet process including jet breaking, satellite droplet formation and ink refill motion as well as bubble growth and collapse.
해석학·생애사 연구방법을 적용한 학생부종합전형 인성면접 혁신방안 연구(2): 심층 인성면접 문항개발

학생부종합전형의 인성면접이 제대로 기능하기 위해서는 현행의 역량기반 인성면접이 가진 문제점을 개선하는 새로운 접근 방법이 요구된다. 행동주의에 기초한 역량은 측정 가능한 양적 결과에 의해 평가되기 때문에 학업 및 성장 과정에서 드러나는 개인의 가치지향은 물론 개별 행위의 총체적 맥락에 관심을 기울일 수 없다. 또한 역량은 업무상황에서 필요한 개인의 행동특성 및 능력을 의미하므로 학생의 인격적 속성을 포함한 미래 가능성 파악을 주목적으로 하는 학생부종합전형의 평가 방법으로는 충분치 못하다. 이러한 경험주의 방법론의 한계를 극복하기 위해 본 연구는 질적 연구방법 중 해석학과 생애사 연구방법을 활용해 자기소개서와 학교생활기록부를 분석하였고 그 결과로부터 심층 인성면접 질문문항 개발을 시도했다. 더 나아가 질문문항 개발에 도움을 주기 위해 전형자료 사례 분석결과를 유형화하여 질문 내용의 일반화 가능성을 제시하였다. 이는 지원학생의 삶 전체에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 인격적·사회적 자아정체성이 형성된 정도를 효과적으로 파악할 수 있는 보편적 방법을 모색하기 위함이다. 대학에서 질적 연구방법에 의한 평가기준을 활용하여 인성면접전형을 준비한다면 역량기반 인성면접에서 확인하기 쉽지 않은 학생의 내면세계와 자기이해 같은 인격적 자아정체성 발견을 통해 인성 평가에 도움을 받을 수 있을 것이다. Personality interview in comprehensive evaluation system of high school records requires a new approach, which can solve the problem from current ability based personality interview, to make it function properly. Ability based on behaviorism is not available for focusing on both overall context of individual behavior characteristic and personal value orientation from process of studying and growth, since it is evaluated by measurable quantitative output. In addition, current ability based personality interview is not enough for comprehensive evaluation system of high school records to seek future possibilities including a student’s personal identity because ability means necessary individual behavior characteristic and skill in business circumstances. The study analyzes a letter of self-introduction and high school records to overcome the limitations of empiricism. From the result, the study develops deep personality interview questions. It also suggests the generalizability of question contents by stereotyping an analysis of cases from evaluation system. The purpose is to seek the universal method for apprehending personal and social identity effectively based on understanding whole life of applying students. Preparing personality interview questions using valuation criteria with qualitative method in university could help current ability based personality interview to be able to discover personal identity such as the inner world and self-knowledge which is hard to check in ability based personality interview.
