Solar urticaria in Korean patients

Background: Solar urticaria (SU) is an uncommon type of photodermatoses characterized by erythematous wheal with pruritus after sunlight exposure, which shows a female predominance. Only a few studies to analyze the clinical features of SU were reported in Asia. Objectives: We aimed to analyze the clinical and photobiological characteristics of SU in Korea. Methods: We retrospectively investigated the medical records of patients with SU who visited the department of dermatology, Konkuk university medical center from January 2005 to January 2020. Results: Of a total of 44 patients, 36 (81.8%) were male and 8 (18.2%) were female. The mean age at onset was 17.6 years (range, 5-47) and the mean threshold time was 19.7 minutes. Among 32 patients who underwent phototesting, the action spectrum most commonly implicated was ultraviolet (UV) A only in 12 (37.5%), and then visible light (415nm) only was responsible for SU in 8 (25.0%). Three patients (9.4%) were induced by both UVA and visible light (415nm). Even 4 patients (12.5%) were triggered by only natural sunlight. Serum immunoglobulin E levels were measured in 33 patients, and 17 (51.5%) showed values higher than normal. The treatment most widely used were oral antihistamine (43.2%), followed by phototherapy (13.6%). Conclusion: SU is a rare photodermatosis in Korea, which shows a male preponderance. In this study, UVA and visible light (415nm) were predominant action spectrum of SU.

Background: Woori-Heukdon (KWH) is a Korean synthetic pig breed generated using Chookjin-Duroc (KCD), Chookjin-Chamdon (KCC), and their crossbreds. Currently, there is a severe lack of studies investigating the Korean breed populations including wild boars (KWB) throughout the genome. Objective: This study was performed to investigate the genetic characteristics of Korean pig populations at the genome-wide level. Methods: Using the SNP dataset derived from genotyped and downloaded datasets using the Illumina PorcineSNP60K BeadChip, we compared the genomes of 532 individuals derived from 23 pig breeds to assess the genetic diversity, inbreeding coefficient, genetic differentiation, and population structure. Results: KWB showed the lowest average expected heterozygosity (HE = 0.1904), while KWH showed the highest genetic diversity (HE = 0.02859) among Korean populations. We verified that the genetic composition of KWH, showing USD of 74.8% and KCC of 25.2% in ADMIXTURE analysis. In population structure analyses, KCC was consistently shown to be separated from other pig populations. In addition, we observed gene flow from Western pigs to a part of Chinese populations. Conclusion: This study showed that Korean native pigs, KCC have genetic differences in comparison with Chinese and Western pigs; despite some historical records and recent genetic studies, we could not find any clear evidence that KCC was significantly influenced by Chinese or Western breeds in this study. We also verified the theoretical genomic composition of KWH at the molecular level in structure analyses. To our knowledge, this is the first genomic study to investigate the genomic characteristics of KWH and KCC.

內醫院은 병원과 약국을 겸비한 일종의 궁중의료기관으로 의사를 비롯하여 여러의원들이 임금과 왕비 및 왕자들의 약을 조제하여 달이던 곳으로, 일명 내국(內局) 또는 약원(藥院)이라고 내의원 앞에 예시되어 있다. 그러나 내의원은 현재 그 내용이 전해지지 않고, 단지 관광지의 유물로만 여겨지고 있다. 현재이 내의원은 창덕궁(昌德宮)에 위치하고 있다. 내의원은 창덕궁의 돈화문(敦化門)을 지나, 인정전(仁政殿)을 거쳐 희정당(熙政當) 좌측에 있으며, 왕비의 거처인 대조전에 가장 가까이 자리잡고 있다. 내의원은 조선왕조 세종25년(1443)에 개원하게 되었으니, 이때는 정치, 문화적으로 안정이 이루어져 가는 상황이었다. 또한 당시 왕이나 왕비 기타 왕족들의 여러 가지 정신적인 갈등으로 인한 질병이 많았으며, 이로인해 전문적이고 독립적인 왕실의료기관의 필요성에 의해 내의원이 독립적인 개원이 이루어졌으리라 사료된다. 이로인하여 저자가 내의원에 관한 자료조사와 실제답사를 통하여 다음과 같은 사실을 알수 있었다. 1) 내의원의 개원은 조선왕조 초기 중앙의료질서 성립을 통한 봉건왕조의 절대왕권확립을 의미함으로 사료된다. 2) 내의원의 위치가 창덕궁의 중심부에 위치하고, 특히 어전(御殿)과 내전(內殿) 가까이에 위치함은 왕실의 질병을 신속하고도 중요하게 다루기 위함으로 사료된다. 3) 특히 의인을 내전에서도 대조전(大造殿) 가까히 둔 것은 왕실의 질병중 왕 비의 정신신체질완의 치료를 위함으로 사료된다. 4) 내의원의 진료형태는 왕진(往診)이었으며, 이는 당시 의원신분이 중인층이었음으로 사료된다. 5) 내의원의 이용중에서 평민에게는 왕명에 의해서만 이루어졌음으로 사료된다.
The Actual Level of Symptomatic Soft Disc Herniation in Patients with Cervical Disc Herniation

Objective: The aim of this study was to predict the relationship between the symptomatic disc herniation level and the osteophyte level or decreased disc height in patients with cervical disc herniation. Methods: Between January 2011 and December 2012, 69 patients with an osteophyte of the cervical spine underwent surgery at a single center due to soft cervical disc herniation. Data including soft disc herniation level, osteophyte level in the posterior vertebral margin, Cobb’s angle, and symptom duration were retrospectively assessed. The patients were divided into three groups according to the relationship between the degenerative change level and the level of reported symptoms. Results: Among the 69 patients, 48 (69.6%) showed a match between osteophyte level and soft disc herniation level. Disc herniation occurred at the adjacent segment to degenerative osteophyte level in 12 patients (17.4%) and at both the adjacent and the osteophyte level in nine (13.0%). There was no significant difference in Cobb’s angle or duration among the three groups. Osteophyte type was not significant. The mean disc height of the prominent degenerative change level group was lower than the adjacent segment level, but this was not significant. Conclusion: Soft cervical disc herniation usually occurs at the level an osteophyte forms. However, it may also occur at segments adjacent to that of the osteophyte level. Therefore, in patients with cervical disc herniation, although a prominent osteophyte alone may appear on plain radiography, we must suspect the presence of soft disc herniation at other levels.

It has been proved that if X(s;s) is the union of two linear star-con¯gurations in P2 of type s £ s, then (IX(s;s) )s 6= f0g for s = 3; 4; 5, and (IX(s;s) )s = f0g for s ¸ 6. We extend P2 to Pn and show that if X(s;s) is the union of two linear star-con¯gurations in Pn, then (IX(s;s) )s = f0g for n ¸ 3 and s ¸ 3. Using this gen-eralization, we also prove that the secant variety Sec1(Splits(Pn)) has the expected dimension 2ns + 1 for n ¸ 3 and s ¸ 3.
Photoemission study of Pd thin films on Ru(0001) surface

At monolayer coverage of Pd on Ru(0001) surface, the core-level spectra of Pd 3d shows a positive corelevel shift of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) while the d-band center of valence band spectra moves away from Fermi level in comparison of bulk Pd(111). The modification of electronic structures,displayed in core-level and valence band XPS spectra can be explained with substrate-induced charge polarization effect in Pd layer, resulting in lowering average potential around atom.

<P> Capsaicin, a pungent ingredient of hot pepper, elicits an intense burning pain when applied cutaneously and intradermally. Activation of capsaicin-gated channel in C-type dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons produces nonselective cationic currents. Although electrophysiological and biochemical properties of capsaicin-activated current (I<SUB>CAP</SUB>) were studied, the regulatory mechanism and intracellular signaling pathway are still unclear. In the present study, we investigated the modulations of I<SUB>CAP</SUB> by DAMGO (μ-opioid agonist) and cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8). In 18 out of 86 cells, the amplitude of I<SUB>CAP</SUB> was significantly increased by DAMGO and completely reversed after washout, while I<SUB>CAP</SUB> was decreased by DAMGO in 25 cells. In 43 cells, DAMGO had no effect on I<SUB>CAP</SUB>. Mean action potential duration was significantly different between increased-by-DAMGO group and decreased-by-DAMGO group. Mean amplitudes of I<SUB>H</SUB> were not significantly different between both groups. CCK-8 reversibly enhanced the amplitude of I<SUB>CAP </SUB>(5/13). DAMGO also increased I<SUB>CAP</SUB> amplitude significantly in the same cells. The amplitude of I<SUB>CAP</SUB> was increased in additive manner by combined applications of DAMGO and CCK-8 in these cells. These results suggest that DAMGO and CCK-8 can either increase or decrease I<SUB>CAP</SUB> presumably depending on the subtypes of DRG cells and classified by electrophysiological properties.
