Efficient iris localisation using a guided filter
Ying Li Han,Tae Hong Min,Rae-Hong Park IET 2015 IET image processing Vol.9 No.5
<P>Biometric information is widely used in user identification systems. Iris is one of the most reliable and accurate biometric information. In an iris recognition system, the iris localisation is one the most important parts because the performance of an iris recognition system is highly dependent on the accuracy of iris localisation. If unreliable iris regions are used in the iris recognition system, the recognition rate may be degraded. Therefore many researchers have studied the iris localisation methods. Especially, localising an iris region from noisy images is one of the hot topics in the iris recognition researches. In this study, the authors are concentrating on the iris localisation, where an efficient iris localisation method for noisy iris images is proposed. The proposed iris localisation method consists of two steps: pupil boundary localisation and iris boundary localisation. To localise a pupil region, an efficient block-based minimum energy detection method is used, in which specular reflection removal is performed as a preprocessing. Iris boundary is localised using a guided filter, the circular Hough transform and an ellipse fitting method. Experimental results with various test image sets show the effectiveness of the proposed method.</P>

In this study, we used RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to analyze and compare bulk cell samples from wild-type (WT) dermal mesenchymal stem cells (DMSCs) (n = 3) and Prx II knockout DMSCs (n = 3). The purpose of the study was to elucidate the role of Prx II on allogeneic immune rejection of transplanted DMSCs. The results revealed differential expression of 472 genes (176 up-regulated and 296 down-regulated; p ≤ 0.05) between the PrxII+/+ (WT) and PrxII−/− sample groups. When highly regulated genes were categorized according to the Gene Ontology (GO) molecular function classification and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis, the PrxII−/− samples showed a robust downward trend in allograft rejection. The study identified 43 all immunologically rejected differentially expressed genes, of which 41 showed lower expression in the PrxII−/− vs. PrxII+/+ (WT) samples. These findings suggest that Prx II gene knockout may down-regulate the allograft rejection that occurs during DMSCs transplantation and improve the survival rate of DMSCs in the host. This study provides a new perspective on the clinical treatment of stem cell transplantation.

Severe inflammatory reactions caused by macrophage activation can trigger a systemic immune response. In the present study, we observed the anti-inflammatory properties of hispidin on LPS induced RAW264.7 macrophage cells. Our results showed that hispidin treatment significantly reduced the production of cellular NO, IL-6 and reactive oxygen species (ROS) while has not inhibitory effect on TNF-α productions. Excitingly, hispidin treatment retains the phagocytosis ability of macrophages which enabling them to perform the function of removing foreign invaders. Signaling studies showed, hispidin treatment dramatic suppressed the LPS induced mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK) and JAK/STAT activations. In conclusion, our findings suggest that hispidin may be a new therapeutic target for clinical treatment of macrophages-mediated inflammatory responses.

<P>Highly thermally stable Ni germanide technology for high performance germanium metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (Ge MOSFETs) is proposed, utilizing Pd incorporation into Ni germanide. The proposed Ni germanide shows not only the improvement of thermal stability but also the reduction of hole barrier height, which can improve the device on-current by reducing the Ni germanide to p+ source/drain contact resistance. The proposed Ni germanide showed a stable sheet resistance of up to 500 degrees C 30-min postgermanidation annealing due to the suppression of agglomeration and oxidation of Ni germanide and the diffusion of Ni and Ge atoms by the incorporated Pd. Therefore, the proposed Ni0.95Pd0.05, alloy could be promising for the high mobility Ge MOSFET applications.</P>

WNT signaling plays an important role in cardiac development, but abnormal activity is often associated with cardiac hypertrophy, myocardial infarction, remodeling, and heart failure. The effect of WNT signaling on regulation of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) secretion is unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Wnt agonist 1 (Wnta1) on ANP secretion and mechanical dynamics in beating rat atria. Wnta1 treatment significantly increased atrial ANP secretion and pulse pressure; these effects were blocked by U73122, an antagonist of phospholipase C. U73122 also abolished the effects of Wnta1-mediated upregulation of protein kinase C (PKC) β and γ expression, and the PKC antagonist Go 6983 eliminated Wnta1-induced secretion of ANP. In addition, Wnta1 upregulated levels of phospho-transforming growth factor-β activated kinase 1 (p-TAK1), TAK1 banding 1 (TAB1) and phospho-activating transcription factor 2 (p-ATF2); these effects were blocked by both U73122 and Go 6983. Wnta1-induced ATF2 was abrogated by inhibition of TAK1. Furthermore, Wnta1 upregulated the expression of T cell factor (TCF) 3, TCF4, and lymphoid enhancer factor 1 (LEF1), and these effects were blocked by U73122 and Go 6983. Tak1 inhibition abolished the Wnta1-induced expression of TCF3, TCF4, and LEF1 and Wnta1-mediated ANP secretion and changes in mechanical dynamics. These results suggest that Wnta1 increased the secretion of ANP and mechanical dynamics in beating rat atria by activation of PKC–TAK1–ATF2–TCF3/LEF1 and TCF4/LEF1 signaling mainly via the WNT/Ca2+ pathway. It is also suggested that WNT–ANP signaling is implicated in cardiac physiology and pathophysiology.

In this research, the influence of an interlayer dielectric (ILD) capping layer on the thermal stability of Ni germanide was analyzed. The Ni germanide was formed on a Ge-on-Si substrate by using a one-step rapid thermal process (RTP) at 400 ˚C for 30 sec. We found little difference in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) results, but the proposed structure with oxide ILD capping layer showed better thermal immunity than that without one. Adopting an oxide ILD capping layer resulted in a lower sheet resistance, less surface roughness, and less Ni germanide agglomeration and penetration after high temperature post-germanidation annealing at 500 ˚C. Therefore, oxide capping is promising for improving the thermal stability of Ni germanide for nanoscale germanium metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (Ge MOSFETs).

Li, Hua-Ying,He, Hui-Bo,Han, Wen-Qiang,Yang, Jun,Gu, Tao,Li, Yuan-ming,Lyu, Sung-Ki Korean Society for Precision Engineering 2015 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.16 No.4
TiN and TiAlN coatings were deposited on the surface of AISI 5140 steel and cemented carbide YT15 by magnetron sputtering technique (MSP). The reciprocating sliding tests of TiN and TiAIN coatings on the surface of AISI 5140 steel were performed to investigate the friction coefficients of coatings affected by various normal loads with friction pair of 304 stainless steel balls. Dry machining tests on AISI 5140 hardened steel were carried out with the TiN and TiAlN coated tools on a CA6140A lathe. The effects of cutting speed on cutting forces and surface roughness of TiN and TiAlN coated tools were obtained and analyzed to assess the cutting performance of coated tools. The microcosmic micrographs of wear areas of coated tools were observed and investigated by scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrum. The results show that the friction coefficients of TiN coatings are lower than that of TiAlN coatings. The cutting force of TiAlN coated tool decreases and flank wear resistance enhances in comparison with TiN coated tool. The wear form and mechanisms of TiN coated tool are mainly crater wear on the rake face and adhesive wear and abrasive wear on the flank face. The wear form and mechanisms of TiAlN coated tool are mainly adhesive wear, the breakage of cutting edge and the damage of tip, accompanied with diffusion and oxidation wear.
