STUDY OF FLARE-ASSOCIATED X-RAY PLASMA EJECTIONS : II. MORPHOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION
KIM YEON-HAN,MOON Y.-J.,CHO K.-S.,BONG SU-CHAN,PARK Y.-D. The Korean Astronomical Society 2004 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.37 No.4
X-ray plasma ejections often occurred around the impulsive phases of solar flares and have been well observed by the SXT aboard Yohkoh. Though the X-ray plasma ejections show various morphological shapes, there has been no attempt at classifying the morphological groups for a large sample of the X-ray plasma ejections. In this study, we have classified 137 X-ray plasma ejections according to their shape for the first time. Our classification criteria are as follows: (1) a loop type shows ejecting plasma with the shape of loops, (2) a spray type has a continuous stream of plasma without showing any typical shape, (3) a jet type shows collimated motions of plasma, (4) a confined ejection shows limited motions of plasma near a flaring site. As a result, we classified the flare-associated X-ray plasma ejections into five groups as follows: loop-type (60 events), spray-type (40 events), jet-type (11 events), confined ejection (18 events), and others (8 events). As an illustration, we presented time sequence images of several typical events to discuss their morphological characteristics, speed, CME association, and magnetic field configuration. We found that the jet-type events tend to have higher speeds and better association with CMEs than those of the loop-type events. It is also found that the CME association (11/11) of the jet-type events is much higher than that (5/18) of the confined ejections. These facts imply that the physical characteristics of the X-ray plasma ejections are closely associated with magnetic field configurations near the reconnection regions.

Red radish seeds were irradiated at doses up to 8 kGy using electron beam (e-beam) and gamma ray (γ-ray). The seed viability and functional properties (carotenoid, chlorophyll, ascorbic acid, and total phenol) of sprouts grown from these irradiated seeds were evaluated. High germination percentage (≥97%) was observed in seeds irradiated at ≤5 kGy, but the yield ratio and sprout length significantly decreased with increased irradiation dose. Irradiation at ≥6 kGy resulted in curling of the sprout roots. Sprouting enhanced the functional properties of red radish seeds as indicated by the increased carotenoid, chlorophyll, ascorbic acid, and total phenol contents during germination. However, radiation treatment hampered the growth of seeds resulting in underdeveloped sprouts with decreased carotenoid, chlorophyll, ascorbic acid, and total phenol contents. In general, e-beam and γ-ray irradiation of red radish seeds showed similar effects on the seed viability and functional properties of sprouts. Postharvest storage reduced the functional quality of sprouts.

We report the first simultaneous observation of X-ray plasma ejection (XPE), coronal mass ejection (CME), and type II solar radio burst on 1999 October 26. First, an XPE was observed from 21: 12 UT to 21: 24 UT in the Yohkoh SXT field of view (1.1 to 1.4 R-circle dot). The XPE was accelerated with a speed range from 190 to 410 km s(-1) and its average speed is about 290 km s(-1). Second, the associated CME was observed by the Mauna Loa Mk4 coronameter (1.1-2.8 R-circle dot) from 21: 16 UT. The CME front was clearly identified at 21: 26 UT and propagated with a deceleration of about-110 m s(-2). Its average speed is about 360 km s(-1). At the type II burst start time (21: 25 UT), the height of the CME front is around 1.7 R-circle dot and its speed is about 470 km s(-1). Third, a type II solar radio burst was observed from 21: 25 UT to 21: 43 UT by the Culgoora solar radio spectrograph. The burst shows three emission patches during this observing period and the emission heights of the burst are estimated to be about 1.3 R-circle dot (21: 25 UT), 1.4 R-circle dot (21: 30 UT), and 1.8 R-circle dot (21: 40 UT). By comparing these three phenomena, we find that: (1) kinematically, while the XPE shows acceleration, the associated CME front shows deceleration; (2) there is an obvious height difference (0.3 R-circle dot) between the CME front and the XPE front around 21: 24 UT and the formation height of the type II burst is close to the trajectory extrapolated from the XPE front; (3) both speeds of the XPE and the CME are comparable with each other around the starting time of the type II burst. Considering the formation height and the speed of the type II burst, we suggest that its first emission is due to the coronal shock generated by the XPE and the other two emissions are driven by the CME flank interacting with the high-density streamer.

The residual stress analysis and fatigue test of a steel plate with a hole were performed in order to investigate the effects of the cold expansion on the fatigue life of the plate. The cold expansion method is a metal forming process by expanding a hole in order to induce compressive tangential residual stresses near the hole. In this research, a S45C steel plate of 3.2 mm thickness with a hole of 4.318 mm diameter was cold expanded by using a mandrel, resulting in a degree of expansion 1.47%. A significant amount of compressive tangential residual stress of 502 MPa at the hole surface was calculated using the finite element analysis. The compressive tangential residual stress showed a very beneficial influence on the fatigue life of the plate by increasing 1.2 to 2 times longer lives compared to the plate without cold expansion, depending on the applied load levels.

During the past 10 years, sales of luxury goods increased significantly to more than US$ 130 billion in 2007. In this industry, more than half of the revenue comes from Asia where the average income has risen significantly, and the demand for luxury products is forecast to grow rapidly. Purchasing luxUly brands appears to be an intriguing social phenomenon that is profitable for companies in this region. As a newly developed country, Korea is one of the most attractive luxUly markets in Asia. CUITently, a total of 120 luxUly fashion brands have entered the Korean market, primarily in luxury districts in Seoul where the competition is fierce, The purposes of this study are to: (I) identi fy antcccdcnts of attitude toward luxUly brands, (2) examine thc cffcct of attitudes toward luxury brands on customer equity, (3) detelllline the impact of attitudes toward luxUly brands on customer lifetime value, and (4) investigate the influence of customer equity on customer life time value. Previous studies have examined materialism, social nccd, experiential need, need for uniqueness, confollllity, and fashion involvement as antecedents of attitude toward luxury brands, Richins and Dowson (1992) suggested that that materialism influences consumption behavior relative to quantity of goods purchased. Nueno and Quelch (1998) reported that the ownership of luxUly brands conveys infonnation related to the owner's social status, conununicates an image of success and prestige, and is a detenninant of purchase behavior. Experiential need is recognized as an important aspect of consumption, especially for new products developed to meet consumer demand. Since luxury goods, by definition are relatively scarce, ownership of these types of products may fulfill consumers' need for uniqueness, In this study, value equity, relationship equity, and brand equity are examined as drivers of customer equity. The sample (n = 114) was undergraduatc and graduate students at two private women's universities in Seoul, Korea, Data collection was conducted using a sel f-administered questionnaire survey in March, 2009. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, factor analysis, reliability analysis, and regression analysis using SPSS 15.0 software, Data analysis resulted in a number of conclusions. First, experiential need and fashion involvement positively influence pat1icipants' attitude toward luxury brands. Second, attitude toward luxury brands positively influences brand equity, followed by value equity and relationship equity. However, there is no significant relationship between attitude toward luxury brand and customer lifetime value. Finally, relationship equity positively influences customer lifetime value, In conclusion, young consumers are an impottant potential consumer group that tries different brands to discover the ones most suitable for them. LuxUlY marketers that use effective marketing strategies to attract and engender loyalty among this potentially lucrative consumer group may increase customer equity and lifetime value,
