        Discovery of Chitin Deacetylase Inhibitors through Structure-Based Virtual Screening and Biological Assays

        Chitin deacetylase (CDA) inhibitors were developed as novel antifungal agents because CDA participates in critical fungal physiological and metabolic processes and increases virulence in soil-borne fungal pathogens. However, few CDA inhibitors have been reported. In this study, 150 candidate CDA inhibitors were selected from the commercial Chemdiv compound library through structure-based virtual screening. The top-ranked 25 compounds were further evaluated for biological activity. The compound J075-4187 had an IC50 of 4.24 ± 0.16 μM for AnCDA. Molecular docking calculations predicted that compound J075-4187 binds to the amino acid residues, including active sites (H101, D48). Furthermore, compound J075-4187 inhibited food spoilage fungi and plant pathogenic fungi, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) at 260 μg/ml and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) at 520 μg/ml. Therefore, compound J075-4187 is a good candidate for use in developing antifungal agents for fungi control.

        Changes in groundwater level and temperature induced by distant earthquakes

        We analyzed the co-seismic responses of groundwater level and temperature in the Tayuan Well, Beijing, China, induced by 85 distant earthquakes over the period from January 2004 to July 2009. The results show that the Tayuan Well records earthquakes worldwide and that the co-seismic response shows the following pattern: water-level oscillation, temperature decrease, oscillations stop, return to normal temperature. The amplitudes of changes in water level and temperature are related to the earthquake magnitude and the distance to the epicenter. We discuss the mechanisms of the decrease in water temperature during the period of oscillations in water level, and the mechanisms of the temperature increase subsequent to the cessation of oscillations. We also analyze the results of previous studies on co-seismic response mechanisms, and consider the mechanisms of gas escape, heat diffusion, and cold-water seepage. These mechanisms may have induced the decrease in water temperature recorded in the present study, and the subsequent return to normal temperatures was due to heat exchange between the well water and the surrounding wall rock

        Real-time hydrogen mud logging during the Wenchuan earthquake fault scientific drilling project (WFSD), holes 2 and 3 in SW China

        We present hydrogen gas concentration data for drilling mud extracted during the Wenchuan Earthquake Fault Scientific Drilling (WFSD; holes 2 and 3), measured on-line during drilling in SW China. Hydrogen influx into the well at depth is largely dependent on lithology and fracture density. In hole WFSD-2, the average background concentration of hydrogen is lower in granitic rocks than in sedimentary formations. More than five major hydrogen influxes were detected while drilling through the sedimentary formations, and two hydrogen-rich zones were detected in the granite (1240–1243 m and 1383.5–1405 m depth). In hole WFSD-3, mud extracted from a tectonic breccia contains high hydrogen concentrations at depths of 600–1000 m depth, and relatively low concentrations below 1000 m depth. In both holes, we observe a lack of hydrogen in the center of the fault zone and high concentrations of hydrogen in fractured zones. Hydrogen concentration in both holes displays significant vertical heterogeneity, and is positively correlated with fracture density. Hydrogen was likely sourced from interaction between water and fresh silicate minerals surfaces that were exposed during faulting, from the mantle, and from faulting events. Fracture zones provide the main channels for the migration of hydrogen gas. The variations in background hydrogen concentrations relate to changes in porosity and permeability. The two hydrogen-rich zones (642.36–676.22 m, and 1383.5–1405 m) were likely caused by earthquake activity or far-field triggering during WFSD-2 drilling. The results of this study provide gas data that can be used to model fault activity. It is important to consider the relationship between hydrogen gas and the seismic cycle, and to use such data to identify seismic precursors.

        Multi-Objective Optimization Model of Electricity Behavior Considering the Combination of Household Appliance Correlation and Comfort

        With the wide application of intelligent household appliances, the optimization of electricity behavior has become an important component of home-based intelligent electricity. In this study, a multi-objective optimization model in an intelligent electricity environment is proposed based on economy and comfort. Firstly, the domestic consumer’s load characteristics are analyzed, and the operating constraints of interruptible and transferable electrical appliances are defined. Then, constraints such as household electrical load, electricity habits, the correlation minimization electricity expenditure model of household appliances, and the comfort model of electricity use are integrated into multi-objective optimization. Finally, a continuous search multi-objective particle swarm algorithm is proposed to solve the optimization problem. The analysis of the corresponding example shows that the multi-objective optimization model can effectively reduce electricity costs and improve electricity use comfort.

        Observer-based Sliding Mode Control for Fractional Order Singular Fuzzy Systems

        In the paper, observer-based sliding mode control (SMC) for fractional order singular fuzzy (FOSF) systems with order 0 < α < 1 is studied. The non-fragile FOSF observer is designed to reconstruct the unmeasured states, and a novel fractional order integral sliding function is formulated. Then, the admissibility condition of the FOSF error system is derived, based on the linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. By using the singular value decomposition approach, the strict LMI-based admissibility condition is improved. Based on the fractional order Lyapunov function and sliding surface, the fractional order SMC is constructed to ensure the reachability of the sliding surface. Two examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the methods proposed in the paper.

        TCSC Nonlinear Adaptive Damping Controller Design Based on RBF Neural Network to Enhance Power System Stability

        In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive damping controller based on radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), which can infinitely approximate to nonlinear system, is proposed for thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC). The proposed TCSC adaptive damping controller can not only have the characteristics of the conventional PID, but adjust the parameters of PID controller online using identified Jacobian information from RBFNN. Hence, it has strong adaptability to the variation of the system operating condition. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is tested on a two-machine five-bus power system and a four-machine two-area power system under different operating conditions in comparison with the lead-lag damping controller tuned by evolutionary algorithm (EA). Simulation results show that the proposed damping controller achieves good robust performance for damping the low frequency oscillations under different operating conditions and is superior to the lead-lag damping controller tuned by EA.
