Addressing cancer-related fatigue through sleep: A secondary analysis of a randomized trial comparing acupuncture and cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia

        Li Xiaotong,Liou Kevin T.,Susan Chimonas,Karolina Bryl,Wong Greta,Eugenie Spiguel,Susan Q. Li,Sheila N.Garland,Bao Ting,Mao Jun J 한국한의학연구원 2023 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.12 No.1

Background: Fatigue is a troublesome symptom in cancer survivors that often results from disrupted sleep. We sought to assess whether two insomnia-focused non-pharmacological interventions are also effective for improving fatigue. Methods: We analyzed data from a randomized clinical trial comparing cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) versus acupuncture for insomnia among cancer survivors. Participants were 109 patients who reported insomnia and moderate or worse fatigue. Interventions were delivered over eight weeks. Fatigue was evaluated at baseline, week 8, and week 20 using the Multidimensional Fatigue Symptom Inventory-Short Form (MFSI-SF). We used both mediation analysis and t-tests to explore the extent to which fatigue reduction was attributable to insomnia response. Results: Compared to baseline, both CBT-I and acupuncture produced significant reductions in total MFSI- SF scores at week 8 ( −17.1 points; 95% confidence interval [CI]: −21.1 to −13.1, and −13.2 points; 95% CI: -17.2 to -9.2, respectively, all p < 0.001) and week 20 (-14.6 points; 95% CI: -18.6 to -10.6, and −14.2 points; 95% CI: -18.1 to -10.3. respectively, all p < 0.001), with no significant between-group differences. MFSI-SF total scores at week 8 were significantly associated with sleep improvements in both CBT-I and acupuncture groups ( p < 0.001 and p = 0.011, respectively). Insomnia responders demonstrated significantly greater improvements in mean MFSI-SF total scores compared with non-responders in the CBT-I group ( p = 0.016) but not in the acupuncture group. Conclusion: CBT-I and acupuncture produced similar, clinically meaningful, and durable fatigue reduc- tions in cancer survivors with insomnia, primarily through improvements in sleep. Acupuncture may also reduce fatigue through additional pathways. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier:

Microbial Communities in Semi-consolidated Carbonate Sediments of the Southwest Indian Ridge

        Jiwei Li,Xiaotong Peng,Huaiyang Zhou,Jiangtao Li,Zhilei Sun,Shun Chen 한국미생물학회 2014 The journal of microbiology Vol.52 No.2

White semi-consolidated carbonate sediments attached toblack ferromanganese oxide films were collected approximately50 km west of a newly discovered hydrothermal fieldnear the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR). The biodiversity ofthe prokaryotic communities within the field was examinedusing clone library-based culture-independent analysis ofthe exterior black oxides and the interior white carbonates. Subsequent 16S rRNA gene analysis suggested that Gammaproteobacteria,Acidobacteria, and Thaumarchaeota membersdominated the bacterial and archaeal clone libraries. To further characterize the metabolic processes within themicrobial community, analyses of the amoA (coding the alphasubunit of the ammonia monooxygenase for Archaea)and aprA (coding the alpha subunit of the dissimilatory adenosine-5 -phosphosulfate reductase for the sulfate-reducingand sulfur-oxidizing prokaryotes) functional genes wereconducted. The functional gene analysis results suggestedthat Thaumarchaeota and Alphaproteobacteria memberswere the potential players that participated in N and S cyclesin this marine carbonate sedimentary environment. Thispaper is the first to describe the microbial communities andtheir potential metabolic pathways within the semi-consolidatedcarbonate sediments of the SWIR.

Accuracy of three-dimensional periodontal ligament models generated using cone-beam computed tomography at different resolutions for the assessment of periodontal bone loss

        Hangmiao Lyu,Li Xu,Huimin Ma,Jianxia Hou,Xiaoxia Wang,Yong Wang,Yijiao Zhao,Weiran Li,Xiaotong Li 대한치과교정학회 2023 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.53 No.2

Objective: To develop a method for generating three-dimensional (3D) digital models of the periodontal ligament (PDL) using 3D cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) reconstruction and to evaluate the accuracy and agreement of the 3D PDL models in the measurement of periodontal bone loss. Methods: CBCT data collected from four patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion prior to periodontal surgery were reconstructed at three voxel sizes (0.2 mm, 0.25 mm, and 0.3 mm), and 3D tooth and alveolar bone models were generated to obtain digital PDL models for the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth. Linear measurements of the alveolar bone crest obtained during periodontal surgery were compared with the digital measurements for assessment of the accuracy of the digital models. The agreement and reliability of the digital PDL models were analyzed using intra- and interexaminer correlation coefficients and Bland–Altman plots. Results: Digital models of the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth, PDL, and alveolar bone of the four patients were successfully established. Relative to the intraoperative measurements, linear measurements obtained from the 3D digital models were accurate, and there were no significant differences among different voxel sizes at different sites. High diagnostic coincidence rates were found for the maxillary anterior teeth. The digital models showed high intra- and interexaminer agreement. Conclusions: Digital PDL models generated by 3D CBCT reconstruction can provide accurate and useful information regarding the alveolar crest morphology and facilitate reproducible measurements. This could assist clinicians in the evaluation of periodontal prognosis and establishment of an appropriate orthodontic treatment plan.

LOCAL SYNCHRONIZATION OF MARKOVIAN NEURAL NETWORKS WITH NONLINEAR COUPLING

LI, CHUNJI,REN, XIAOTONG The Korean Society for Computational and Applied M 2017 Journal of applied mathematics & informatics Vol.35 No.3

In order to react the dynamic behavior of the system more actually, it is necessary to solve the first problem of synchronization for Markovian jump complex network system in practical engineering problem. In this paper, the problem of local stochastic synchronization for Markovian nonlinear coupled neural network system is investigated, including nonlinear coupling terms and mode-dependent delays, that is less restriction to other system. By designing the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and applying less conservative inequality, we get a new criterion to ensure local synchronization in mean square for Markovian nonlinear coupled neural network system. The criterion introduced some free matrix variables, which are less conservative. The simulation confirmed the validity of the conclusion.

CO2 capture performance of cement-modified carbide slag

        Xiaotong Ma,Yingjie Li,Changyun Chi,Wan Zhang,Zeyan Wang 한국화학공학회 2017 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.34 No.2

A novel and low-cost synthetic CO2 sorbent for calcium looping process, cement-modified carbide slag (CMCS), was synthesized from carbide slag, aluminate cement and by-product of biodiesel by combustion. The effects of synthesis conditions such as combustion temperature, combustion duration, hydration, by-product of biodiesel and cement addition and regeneration temperature on CO2 capture performance of CMCS were investigated. The comprehensively optimum preparation conditions of CMCS were obtained. The highest CO2 capture capacity is 0.62 g/g after 10 cycles, which is 2.18 times as high as that of carbide slag. The addition of aluminate cement improves the CO2 capture performance of CMCS, while excessive aluminate cement is adverse for CO2 capture due to the reduced CaO content in CMCS. The addition of by-product of biodiesel contributes to a uniform sol mixing of carbide slag and cement. The CMCS exhibits higher carbonation and calcination rates than CS. The porous and stable pore structure leads to the better CO2 capture performance and cyclic stability of CMCS.

Green multi-functional monomer based ion imprinted polymers for selective removal of copper ions from aqueous solution

        Wang, Liyan,Li, Jinhua,Wang, Jianan,Guo, Xiaotong,Wang, Xiaoyan,Choo, Jaebum,Chen, Lingxin Academic Press 2019 Journal of colloid and interface science Vol.541 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Green ion imprinted polymers (IIPs) were prepared in aqueous phase via the synergy of three functional monomers of low-cost eco-friendly gelatin (G), 8-hydroxyquinoline (HQ) and chitosan (C), namely G-HQ-C IIPs, and were applied as an effective and recyclable adsorbent to remove Cu(II) from aqueous solution. The as-prepared G-HQ-C IIPs were systematically characterized, and several major factors affecting adsorption capacity including solution pH, temperature and contact time were investigated in detail. The adsorption of Cu(II) on G-HQ-C IIPs followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, and the adsorption capacity increased with temperature increase. Moreover, the maximum adsorption capacities of G-HQ-C IIPs toward Cu(II) reached up to 111.81 mg/g at room temperature, much higher than those of most of the reported adsorbents for Cu(II). The G-HQ-C IIPs displayed excellent selectivity against seven common divalent ions with selectivity coefficients above 18.71, as well as high anti-interference ability. Additionally, a good reusability was demonstrated without significant loss in adsorption capacity after at least ten cycles. The IIPs were applied to environmental water samples for selective removal of Cu(II) with satisfactory results. By replacing Cu(II) template by Cd(II), Hg(II) and Pb(II), respectively, the obtained three kinds of IIPs based on G-HQ-C presented convincing imprinting properties, and therefore the work could provide a simple and general imprinting strategy toward various concerned heavy metal ions through multi-point interactions from multiple functional monomers.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

The Effect of Carbon Nanomaterials on Senescence of Cut Flowers in Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.)

        Di Zhang,Xiaotong Chen,Jiangyuan Sheng,Yafei Zhang,Xiaohui Shen,Li Ren 한국원예학회 2021 원예과학기술지 Vol.39 No.3

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) have remarkable chemical, physical, electrical, and structural properties and favorable biocompatibility. This study used carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) cut flowers as a model to evaluate the protective effects of 3 kinds of CNMs (single-walled carbon nanotubes [SWCNT], graphene quantum dots [GQD], and fullerenes [C60]) on the antioxidant activity and senescence of plant cells. We found that 1 mg·L-1 C60 and 25 mg·L-1 GQD extended the vase life (VL) of carnation by approximately 10%. SWCNT cannot be absorbed and transported by plant vascular tissue, and higher concentrations of SWCNT can block vascular tissue, leading to decreased VL. Physiological tests have shown that the The malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydroxyl radical (OH·) levels significantly decreased after the GQD and C60 treatments, and the main factors that cause cell damage changed from H₂O₂ to OH·. The in vitro Fenton reaction and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay indicated that both C60 and GQD may inhibit OH· generation by approximately 10% to 15%, and GQD had higher DPPH free radical scavenging activity. Accordingly, a suitable concentration of C60 and GQD can influence reactive oxygen species metabolism and downstream biological events, including the cell redox state, the antioxidant system, and membrane lipid peroxidation, effectively delaying senescence and abscission of plant tissue.
