        Overexpression of miR-191 Predicts Poor Prognosis and Promotes Proliferation and Invasion in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

        Purpose: Accumulating evidence has shown that dysregulation of microRNA-191 (miR-191) is closely associated with tumorigenesisand progression in a wide range of cancers. This study aimed to explore the potential role of miR-191 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Materials and Methods: miR-191 expression was assessed in 93 ESCC tissue specimens by real-time polymerase chain reaction, and survival analysis was performed via Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses. 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2-H-tetrazolium bromide, plate colony-forming, BrdU, and Transwell assays were conducted to observe the effect of miR-191 on ESCC proliferation and invasion. Luciferase reporter and western blot assays were taken to identify target genes of miR-191. Results: miR-191 was overexpressed in 93 cases of ESCC, compared with adjacent normal tissues, and miR-191 expression was significantly related to differentiation, depth of invasion, TNM stage, lymph node metastasis, and distant metastasis of tumor. Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses demonstrated that overexpression of miR-191 was an independent and significant predictorof ESCC prognosis. Both gain-of-function and loss-of-function experiments showed that miR-191 promoted ESCC cell proliferation and invasion activities in vitro. Early growth response 1 (EGR1), a tumor suppressor, was predicted as a direct target of miR-191. Luciferase reporter and western blot assays proved that miR-191 reduced EGR1 expression by directly binding its 3' untranslated region. Moreover, EGR1 knockdown by siRNA enhanced ESCC cell growth and invasion. Conclusion: Our findings provide specific biological roles of miR-191 in ESCC survival and progression. Targeting the novel miR-191/EGR1 axis represents a potential new therapeutic way to block ESCC development.

      • Differential Evolution Algorithm for Constraint Joint Replenishment Problem with Indirect Grouping Strategy

        The joint replenishment problem with deterministic resource restriction is considered. We present a differential evolution (DE) algorithm that uses indirect grouping strategy to solve constrained joint replenishment. The procedure and structure of the DE algorithm is proposed. Extensive computational experiments are performed to compare the performances of the DE algorithm with results of genetic algorithm (GA) and heuristic algorithm CRAND. The experimental results indicate that the DE algorithm performs relative to CRAND and superior to GA.

        Effects of Water-Soluble Ganoderma lucidum Polysaccharides on the Immune Funtions of Patients with Advanced Lung Cancer

        Preclinical studies have established that the polysaccharide fractions of Ganoderma lucidumhave potential an-titumor activity. Recent clinical studies have demonstrated that G. lucidumpolysaccharides enhance host immune functions[e.g., enhanced natural killer (NK) cell activity] in patients with advanced solid tumors, although an objective response wasnot observed. This open-label study aimed to evaluate the effects of water-soluble G. lucidumpolysaccharides (Ganopoly??,Encore International Corp., Auckland, New Zealand) on immune functions in patients with advanced lung cancer. Thirty-sixpatients were enrolled and treated with 5.4 g/day Ganopoly for 12 weeks. In the 30 cancer patients who completed the trial,treatment with Ganopoly did not significantly alter the mean mitogenic reactivity to phytohemagglutinin, mean counts of CD3,CD4, CD8, and CD56, mean plasma concentrations of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, and interferon (IFN)-., or NK activity in thepatients, but the results were significantly variable. However, some cancer patients demonstrated markedly modulated im-mune functions. The changes in IL-1 were correlated with those for IL-6, IFN-., CD3, CD8, and NK activity (P. .05), andIL-2 changes were correlated with those for IL-6, CD8, and NK activity. The results suggest that subgroups of cancer patientsmight be responsive to Ganopoly in combination with chemotherapy/radiotherapy. Further studies are needed to explore theefficacy and safety of Ganopoly used alone or in combination with chemotherapy/radiotherapy in lung cancer patients.

        A Flattop Radiation Pattern Antenna with Special‑Shaped Array Placement for Stadium Communications

        A fattop radiation pattern antenna with special-shaped array placement for large-scale stadium communications is presented in this paper. The antenna array consists of only 16 electric dipoles, each of that is±45° linear polarizations, placed in three rings confguration above a ground plane. Under the ground plane two feeding networks with±45° linear polarizations, respectively are used to divide signals to the 16 electric dipoles to produce fattop radiation patterns. A prototype operated at 2300–2700 MHz for stadium wireless communications, such as 4G LTE, is manufactured and tested, and good agreements between simulation and measurement are demonstrated. The measured gain is above 12 dBi and the side-lobe levels are lower than −20 dB. The measured isolations between the two polarization ports are less than −30 dB within the operating band. A fast beam ramp of less than 20° from −3 to −20 dB is achieved.
