        Effect of Monascus as a Nitrite Substitute on Color, Lipid Oxidation, and Proteolysis of Fermented Meat Mince

        Monascus spp. are fungi, traditionally eaten in Asian countries, that have the the potential to be used as a nitrite substitute in meat-product processing. Effects of using Monascus ruber MJ-1 as a nitrite substitute on color, lipid oxidation and proteolysis of fermented meat mince were investigated in this study. After 4 days of fermentation, a* and L* values for the samples were significantly higher and lower than the values for the control, respectively; however, b* values were significantly lower than that of the control throughout the fermentation process (p<0.05). Furthermore, Monascus ruber MJ-1 fermentation decreased the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) value and increased the myofibril fragmentation index (MFI) value of meat mince significantly (p<0.05). SDS-PAGE results further indicated that myofibrillar proteins were degraded during fermentation, while sarcoplasmic proteins were not. These results suggest prospects for the broad application of Monascus as a nitrite substitute in meat processing.

        Association analysis of polymorphism in the NR6A1 gene with the lumbar vertebrae number traits in sheep

        Introduction The vertebral number is an economically significant trait, which is associated with body length and carcass traits. Nuclear Receptor Subfamily 6, Group A, Member 1 (NR6A1) is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily and it plays an important role in the early development of embryos. Objectives The NR6A1 gene was considered as an important candidate for influence vertebrae number, while the potential associations between this gene and the number of lumbar vertebrae traits of sheep have not been explored. Methods In this study, we detected the genetic variants of NR6A1 gene and analyzed the associations of the polymorphisms with lumbar number traits in 130 Kazakh sheep. We use single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) technique to detect single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of NR6A1 gene, and the association of the genotype and lumbar number variation was analyzed by independent Chi-square test. Results We detect SNP of NR6A1 gene by PCR-SSCP technique, and polymorphisms were only found in the coding region of exon-6 and exon-8 of NR6A1 gene. In order to investigate the connection between the SNP locus and lumbar number traits in sheep, we conducted a Chi-square test for independence for exon-6 and exon-8 of NR6A1 gene, respectively. Association analysis revealed significant associations between the SNP (rs414302710: A >C) in the exon-8 of NR6A1 gene with the number of lumbar vertebrae (P < 0.01). Conclusion Our study indicated that this SNP (rs414302710: A>C) locus of exon-8 of NR6A1 gene in sheep possible influence the number of lumbar vertebrae, which has the potential to be applied in selective breeding of sheep.

        An Improved Mathematical Calculation Method for Beam String Structure Based on Static Equilibrium Principle

        The beam string structure (BSS) has been widely applied to public buildings (e.g. sports venues and exhibition centers) for its strong adaptability to architectural form and reasonable load bearing mechanism. However, most mathematical calculation methods for BSS are too complicated to be generally mastered by structural engineers, which limits the promotion and actual application. In this paper, two analytical calculation methods for the BSS are proposed based on displacement control objectives and work-energy principle. The computational formulas are then derived to calculate the member internal force and structural deformation. On this basis, the tension and static load tests and the fi nite element analytical method have been carried out to assess the calculation methods. The results of the tests and simulation are in good agreement with the analytical solution obtained by the computational formulas. Moreover, the formulas can be more appropriate with a greater beam span, proper rise–span and sag–span ratios (between 1/15 and 1/12) as well as more brace struts.

        Analysis of skid damage to cylindrical roller bearing of mainshaft of aeroengine

        Skid damage to mainshaft bearings on aeroengines severely reduces aircraft reliability. In this study, a batch of cylindrical roller bearings extracted from mainshaft of inservice aeroengines with, skid damage after a certain service period, were collected, and damage features of the bearings were characterized and compared with those of the undamaged bearings and the new ones. Microscopic feature evaluation, elemental analysis as well as the composition distribution of the bearings were conducted using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and surface profilometry. Analysis results reveal that skidding itself is a very complex process initiated by the action of different mechanisms, and manifest in different wear types. The damage mechanism of skid damaged bearings was the joint consequence of abrasive wear, oxidation wear and delamination wear. All the aforementioned damage and wear led to severe aircraft failures.

        Fast iterative algorithm for calculating the critical current of second generation high temperature superconducting racetrack coils

        The critical current is one of the key parameters of high temperature superconducting (HTS) racetrack coils. Therefore, it is significant to calculate critical currents of HTS coils. This paper introduces a fast iterative algorithm for calculating the critical current of second generation (2G) HTS coils. This model does not need to solve long charging transients which greatly reduced the amount of calculation. To validate this model, the V-I curve of four 2G HTS double racetrack coils are measured. The effect of the silicon steel sheet on the critical current of the racetrack coil is also studied based on this algorithm.

        A Method for Generating Malware Countermeasure Samples Based on Pixel Attention Mechanism

        Studies have shown that malware has become a primary means of attacking the Internet. Therefore, adversarial samples have become a vital breakthrough point for studying malware. By studying adversarial samples, we can gain insights into the behavior and characteristics of malware, evaluate the performance of existing detectors in the face of deceptive samples, and help to discover vulnerabilities and improve detection methods for better performance. However, existing adversarial sample generation methods still need help regarding escape effectiveness and mobility. For instance, researchers have attempted to incorporate perturbation methods like Fast Gradient Sign Method (FGSM), Projected Gradient Descent (PGD), and others into adversarial samples to obfuscate detectors. However, these methods are only effective in specific environments and yield limited evasion effectiveness. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a malware adversarial sample generation method (PixGAN) based on the pixel attention mechanism, which aims to improve adversarial samples' escape effect and mobility. The method transforms malware into grey-scale images and introduces the pixel attention mechanism in the Deep Convolution Generative Adversarial Networks (DCGAN) model to weigh the critical pixels in the grey-scale map, which improves the modeling ability of the generator and discriminator, thus enhancing the escape effect and mobility of the adversarial samples. The escape rate (ASR) is used as an evaluation index of the quality of the adversarial samples. The experimental results show that the adversarial samples generated by PixGAN achieve escape rates of 97%, 94%, 35%, 39%, and 43% on the Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Convolutional Neural Network and Recurrent Neural Network (CNN_RNN), and Convolutional Neural Network and Long Short Term Memory (CNN_LSTM) algorithmic detectors, respectively.

      • Skewed Data Distribution for Active Storage Systems on Hybrid Servers

        With the popularity of new storage technologies, hybrid active storage system provides an efficient way to improve the performance of high-performance computing applications. However, current active storage efforts have neglected the storage performance gap between heterogeneous servers, largely affecting the overall system performance. In this paper, we propose SDD, a Skewed Data Distribution scheme for hybrid active storage systems. In contrast to traditional even data distribution schemes, SDD distribute data on servers with skewed amount of data based on their performance. We have implemented a prototype of our proposed data layout scheme in a parallel I/O system, and demonstrated its benefits with a typical data processing application. Experimental results show our proposed data placement scheme can significantly improve the overall active storage system performance.

        3',4',5',5,7-Pentamethoxyflavone Sensitizes Cisplatin-Resistant A549 Cells to Cisplatin by Inhibition of Nrf2 Pathway

        Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is an important redox-sensitive transcription factor that regulates the expression of several cytoprotective genes. More recently, genetic analyses of human tumors have indicated that Nrf2 may cause resistance to chemotherapy. In this study, we found that the expression levels of Nrf2 and its target genes GCLC, HO-1, NQO1 were significantly higher in cisplatinresistant A549 (A549/CDDP) cells than those in A549 cells, and this resistance was partially reversed by Nrf2 siRNA. 3',4',5',5,7-Pentamethoxyflavone (PMF), a natural flavonoid extracted from Rutaceae plants, sensitized A549/CDDP to CDDP and substantially induced apoptosis compared with that of CDDP alone treated group, and this reversal effect decreased when Nrf2 was downregulated by siRNA. Mechanistically, PMF reduced Nrf2 expression leading to a reduction of Nrf2 downstream genes, and in contrast, this effect was decreased by blocking Nrf2 with siRNA. Taken together, these results demonstrated that PMF could be used as an effective adjuvant sensitizer to increase the efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs by downregulating Nrf2 signaling pathway.

      • RDO-based joint bit allocation for MPEG G-PCC

        In this paper, a rate-distortion optimization (RDO) model is proposed to find the joint bit allocation of geometry data and color data based on geometry-based point cloud compression (G-PCC) of Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). The mechanism of the method is to construct the RD models for geometry and color data through the training process. Afterward, two rate-distortion (RD) models are integrated as well as the decision of the parameter λ to obtain the final RDO model. The experimental results show that the proposed method can decrease 20% of the geometry Bjøntegaard delta bit rate and increase 37% of the color Bjøntegaard delta bit rate compared to the MPEG G-PCC TMC13v12.0 software.
