<P>Sensors that reproduce the complex characteristics of cutaneous receptors in the skin have important potential in the context of artificial systems for controlled interactions with the physical environment. Multimodal responses with high sensitivity and wide dynamic range are essential for many such applications. This report introduces a simple, three-dimensional type of microelectromechanical sensor that incorporates monocrystalline silicon nanomembranes as piezoresistive elements in a configuration that enables separate, simultaneous measurements of multiple mechanical stimuli, such as normal force, shear force, and bending, along with temperature. The technology provides high sensitivity measurements with millisecond response times, as supported by quantitative simulations. The fabrication and assembly processes allow scalable production of interconnected arrays of such devices with capabilities in spatiotemporal mapping. Integration with wireless data recording and transmission electronics allows operation with standard consumer devices.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Han, Dong Cheul,Kwak, Giseop,Kim, Yong Bae,Bae, Jin Ju,Lee, Wang Hoon,Seo, Yoon-Sik,Byun, Jae Hyuk,Kang, Shin Won American Scientific Publishers 2014 Journal of nanoscience and nanotechnology Vol.14 No.8
<P>To improve the operation lifetime of organic solar cell, two different diphenylacetylene polymers were tested as UV blocking layer. One of them showed either stronger UV absorption or a relatively intense fluorescence emission in the visible region which is well overlapped with the absorption of P3HT in the OSC. The diphenylacetylene polymer film significantly improved the operation lifetime of the OSC by efficiently absorbing the UV light, while reducing the UV-light energy loss to a minimum by converting the UV light to visible light through a down-conversion process.</P>
‘Redvita’ : A Yellow-fleshed Kiwifruit with Red Color Around the Core
Yong-Bum Kwack,Hong-Lim Kim,Jae-Han Lee,Kyeong-Ho Chung,Won Byoung Chae 한국원예학회 2017 원예과학기술지 Vol.35 No.3
Kiwifruits introduced to Korea typically have green fruit flesh, yellow flesh, or yellow flesh with red coloration around the core. Here, we describe a new cultivar called ‘Redvita’, the first kiwifruit cultivar of Korea with yellow flesh and red coloration around the core. A conventional field cross was conducted in 2003, and permission for the final release of ‘Redvita’ was obtained in 2012. ‘Redvita’ originates from ‘Red Princess’, a maternal vine known for the red coloration in its flesh. The pollinizer is ‘NHK0013’ (IT233175), which blooms in early May. A principal feature of ‘Redvita’ is its high vitamin C content, which at an average of 140 ㎎ per 100 g of fresh weight is 2 - 4 times higher than other commercial cultivars. The average fruit weight is 97 g; bigger than that of the control cultivar ‘Hongyang’. ‘Redvita’ blooms in mid-May and is usually harvested in early to mid-October, approximately 150 - 160 days after anthesis. ‘Redvita’ produces 3 or 4 flowers per fruiting shoot, with no small lateral flowers, therefore does not need to be thinned before blooming for commercial production. The cultivar is acidulous because of a high titratable acidity content (about 1.5%), which is higher than other cultivars (less than 1.0%). ‘Redvita’ was registered with the Korean Seed and Variety Service in 2015 for plant variety protection rights (no. 5604).

Background/Aims: This study aimed to develop and validate a risk prediction model for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in treatment-naive patients receiving oral antiviral treatment for chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Methods: We investigated 2,061 Korean treatment-naive patients with CHB treated with entecavir as an initial therapy. A risk score model for HCC development was developed based on multivariable Cox regression model in a single center (n=990) and was validated using the time-dependent area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) in three other centers (n=1,071). The difference of HCC development among risk groups (low, intermediate, and high) categorized by risk score was also investigated. Results: The cumulative incidence rates of HCC at 5 years were 11.2% and 8.9% in the testing and validation cohorts, respectively. HCC-Risk Estimating Score in CHB patients Under Entecavir (HCC-RESCUE) is formulated as (age+15×gender [female=0 / male=1]+23×cirrhosis [absence=0 / presence=1]). The AUROCs at 1 year, 3 years, and 5 years were 0.82, 0.81, and 0.81, respectively, in the validation cohort. A significant difference of HCC development in each risk group was determined by the 5-year HCC risk score in the validation cohort (low risk group, 2.1%; intermediate risk group, 9.3%; high risk group, 41.2%, p<0.001). Conclusions: The study presents a new risk score model with a good ability to predict HCC development and determine high risk patients for HCC development consisting of readily available clinical factors in treatment-naive CHB patients receiving entecavir. <P>RNA editing can increase RNA sequence variation without altering the DNA sequence. By comparing whole-genome and transcriptome sequence data of a rectal cancer, we found novel tumor-associated increase of RNA editing in <I>ras homologue family member Q</I> (<I>RHOQ</I>) transcripts. The adenosine-to-inosine (A-to-I) editing results in substitution of asparagine with serine at residue 136. We observed a higher level of the <I>RHOQ</I> RNA editing in tumor compared with normal tissue in colorectal cancer (CRC). The degree of RNA editing was associated with RhoQ protein activity in CRC cancer cell lines. RhoQ N136S amino acid substitution increased RhoQ activity, actin cytoskeletal reorganization, and invasion potential. <I>KRAS</I> mutation further increased the invasion potential of RhoQ N136S in vitro. Among CRC patients, recurrence was more frequently observed in patients with tumors having edited <I>RHOQ</I> transcripts and mutations in the <I>KRAS</I> gene. In summary, we show that RNA editing is another mechanism of sequence alteration that contributes to CRC progression.</P>
Macromolecular Sensing of RNAs by Exploiting Conformational Changes in Supramolecular Nanostructures
Han, So-hee,Kim, Hee-won,Jeong, Woo-jin,Lim, Yong-beom American Chemical Society 2014 Biomacromolecules Vol.15 No.7
<P>Here, we report on a ratiometric fluorescence biosensor based on self-assembled peptide nanostructures (SPN), which can respond to conformational changes induced by RNA ligand binding. The design of the SPN biosensor was inspired by the conformational stabilization and multimerization behaviors of the HIV-1 Rev protein induced by cooperative protein–protein and protein–RNA interactions. Because conformation-sensitive SPN biosensors can orchestrate binding and signal transduction events, they can be developed as highly sophisticated and smart nanomaterials for biosensing.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/bomaf6/2014/bomaf6.2014.15.issue-7/bm500480y/production/images/medium/bm-2014-00480y_0004.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/bm500480y'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
Phase Hold-up and Critical Fluidization Velocity in a Three-Phase Inverse Fluidized Bed
Han, Hee-Dong,Lee, Won,Kim, Young-Kang,Kwon, Jae-Lee,Choi, Ho-Suk,Kang, Yong,Kim, Sang-Done 한국화학공학회 2003 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.20 No.1
We studied the hydrodynamic characteristics of a three-phase inverse fluidized bed made of a transparent acrylic column of 0.115m inner diameter and 2m heights. Air, water and polyethylene particles were used as the gas, liquid and solid phase, respectively. We used both hydrophobic low density polyethylene(LDPE) and hydrophilic LDPE as solid phase, and distilled water as liquid phase, and filtered air as gas phase. The LDPE was chemically treated by chlorosulfonic acid to change the surface property from hydrophilic. We tried to solely investigate the effect of the surface hydrophilicity of polymeric particles on the phase holdup and the critical fluidization velocity of three-phase inverse fluidization. Thus, We measured the static pressure and eventually observed critical fluidization velocity. Critical fluidization velocity became smaller in case of using MDPE hydrophobic particles than LDPE hydrophilic particles. This was thought to be due to the retardation of rising bubbles near hydrophobic particles and, subsequently, the increase of gas hold-up.
