        釋論香港中學文言文的敎學難點及其策略

        문언문의 한자·어휘 교육은 중학교 중문 교육의 필수적인 부분이다. 이전에 홍콩의 중학교에서 시험을 치르었던 아니던 간에, 문언문은 최근 중학교 졸업시험에서 그 지식과 이해가 포함되고 있으며, 중국 어문교과의 읽기 교과에서도 일정한 비율을 차지하고 있디 때문에 그 중요성은 소홓히 할 수 없다. 그러한 가운데 학생들이 효과적으로 문언문 한자·어휘를 분석하고 습득하게 교육시킬 수 있는 전략과 방법은 바로 학생들의 읽기 능력을 향상시키는 중요한 관건이 된다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 필자 개인의 경험과 홍콩의 문언문 읽기 교육의 실제를 결합하여 구체적이고 실천적인 교수-학습 방법을 탐구해본다. 우선 홍콩의 문언문교육의 발전을 회고하여 보고, 이전의 문언문 교육이 가졌던 난점을 개괄한 후, 고대 한어의 어법적 특징에 집중하여 몇 가지 문언문 교육에서 효과적인 방법과 전략을 제시하여 이를 통해 학생들의 문언문에서의 한자와 어휘와 대한 인식과 이해, 흥미를 증가시키고자 한다. Teaching of Classical Chinese Characters (Wenyan) is a crucial part of Chinese Language education in Hong Kong Secondary School. Be it the former Hong Kong Certificate Education Examination or the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education, the reading comprehension of Classical Chinese passages remains a major section of the Chinese Language Examination, carrying a high assessment weightage. Thus, it is important to improve students` reading performance by equipping them with effective reading strategies and skills to grasp the meaning of Classical Chinese Characters and phrases. For this purpose, based on the situation of Hong Kong secondary education and the author`s teaching experience, this paper attempts to discuss teaching and learning strategies for Classical Chinese reading in a practical way. It will start by reviewing the development of Hong Kong Classical Chinese education, then trying to find out the teaching and learning difficulties faced by teachers and students. Based on the linguistic features of classical Chinese, discussions about teaching strategies will be followed by the review. Suggestions on effective teaching strategies to enhance students` reading literacy and interest will be made in this paper.

        Complexity science of multiscale materials via stochastic computations

        <P>New technological advances today allow for a range of advanced composite materials, including multilayer materials and nanofiber-matrix composites. In this context, the key to developing advanced materials is the understanding of the interplay between the various physical scales present, from the atomic level interactions to the microstructural composition and the macroscale behavior. Using the developing ‘multiresolution data sets mechanics’, the ‘predictive science-based governing laws of the materials microstructure evolutions’ are derived and melted into a ‘stochastic multiresolution design framework.’ Under such a framework, the governing laws of the materials microstructure evolution will be essential to assess, across multiple scales, the impact of multiscale material design, geometry design of a structure, and the manufacturing process conditions, by following the cause–effect relationships from structure to property and then to performance.</P><P>The future integrated multiscale analysis system will be constructed based on a probabilistic complexity science-based mathematical framework. Its verification, validation and uncertainty quantification are done through carefully designed experiments, and the life-cycled materials design for products design and manufacturing is performed through the use of petascale computing. The various techniques of microstructure reconstruction result in the generation of model microstructures that, at some level, has the same statistical properties as the real heterogeneous media. Having reconstructed the heterogeneous medium, one can then evaluate its effective properties via direct numerical simulation and compare these values with experimentally measured properties of the actual medium. The proposed analysis will be dynamic in nature to capture the multi-stage historical evolvement of material/structure performance over the life span of a product. In addition to providing more accurate assessment of structure performance with stochastic multiscale analysis, our development will provide the capability of predicting structure failures and system reliability to enable more reliable design and manufacturing decisions in product development.         Comparison of Serum Ketone Levels and Cardiometabolic Efficacy of Dapagliflozin versus Sitagliptin among Insulin-Treated Chinese Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

        Background: Insulin-treated patients with long duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are at increased risk of ketoacidosis related to sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i). The extent of circulating ketone elevation in these patients remains unknown. We conducted this study to compare the serum ketone response between dapagliflozin, an SGLT2i, and sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor, among insulin-treated T2DM patients.Methods: This was a randomized, open-label, active comparator-controlled study involving 60 insulin-treated T2DM patients. Participants were randomized 1:1 for 24-week of dapagliflozin 10 mg daily or sitagliptin 100 mg daily. Serum β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) levels were measured at baseline, 12 and 24 weeks after intervention. Comprehensive cardiometabolic assessments were performed with measurements of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC), vibration-controlled transient elastography and echocardiography.Results: Among these 60 insulin-treated participants (mean age 58.8 years, diabetes duration 18.2 years, glycosylated hemoglobin 8.87%), as compared with sitagliptin, serum BHB levels increased significantly after 24 weeks of dapagliflozin (P=0.045), with a median of 27% increase from baseline. Change in serum BHB levels correlated significantly with change in free fatty acid levels. Despite similar glucose lowering, dapagliflozin led to significant improvements in body weight (P=0.006), waist circumference (P=0.028), HDL-C (P=0.041), CEC (P=0.045), controlled attenuation parameter (P=0.007), and liver stiffness (P=0.022). Average E/e’, an echocardiographic index of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, was also significantly lower at 24 weeks in participants treated with dapagliflozin (P=0.037).Conclusion: Among insulin-treated T2DM patients with long diabetes duration, compared to sitagliptin, dapagliflozin modestly increased ketone levels and was associated with cardiometabolic benefits.

        Improving mobility in the intensive care unit with a protocolized, early mobilization program: observations of a single center before-and-after the implementation of a multidisciplinary program

        Background: Early intensive care unit (ICU) protocolized rehabilitative programs have been described previously, yet with differing starting time points and mostly on mechanically ventilated patients. We extended the concept to all admitted ICU patients and investigate the efficacy of early mobilization in improving mobility of the critically ill, address issues surrounding the timing and intensity of an early rehabilitative program.Methods: Prospective cohorts of patients admitted consecutively before-and-after (control, n=92; intervention, n=90) the introduction of an early mobilization program in a single center, general hospital ICU. Improvement in mobility as assessed by ICU mobility score, on ICU admission and upon ICU discharge, was measured as a primary outcome.Results: Those receiving early mobilization in the intensive care unit had higher ICU mobility score (2.63; 95% confidence interval, 0.65–4.61; P<0.001) upon discharge from the intensive care, with earlier out of bed mobilization on day 5 compared to the control group of day 21 (P<0.001). No differences were found in terms of mortality, intensive care hospitalization and subsequent hospitalization duration after discharge from ICU.Conclusions: Here, we report that improvement in mobility score earlier in the course of intensive care hospitalization with the introduction of a protocolized early rehabilitative program.

        Comparison of Gene Coding Clones Content in In vivo and In vitro Methyl-Filtration Libraries of Maize(Zea may)

        It has been hypothesized that efficient exclusion of methylated retrotransposons and repeated DNA region is one of the rapid and cost-effective approaches for comprehensive gene discovery in large genome size of maize. Three kinds of methylation-sensitive restriction enzymes, HapII, MspI and McrBC, were used to identify the restriction frequency of cytosine methylation sites in maize genome. Roughly 60% of total maize genomic DNA was restricted less than 500bp by McrBC, and the most of restricted small size fraction was composed retrotransposon. In order to validate the efficient construction of gene-rich shotgun library, we compare two gene-rich methyl-filtration shotgun libraries using in vivo and in vitro methyl-filtration system. The size selected DNA fraction by Sau3A-McrBC enzyme treated was very stable and has not appeared modification in E. coli, but most insert DNA size of partially digested with Sau3A were decrease less than 500bp by bacterial methylation-modification system. In compare of retroelements portion, A 44.6% of the sequences were retroelement in unmethyl-filtered library, and the most of them was Copia type, such as Prem, Opie and Ji. The portion of retroelement was drastically decreased to 25% and 20% by in vivo and in vitro filtration system, respectively.

      • ELD-Net: An Efficient Deep Learning Architecture for Accurate Saliency Detection

        <P>Recent advances in saliency detection have utilized deep learning to obtain high-level features to detect salient regions in scenes. These advances have yielded results superior to those reported in past work, which involved the use of hand-crafted low-level features for saliency detection. In this paper, we propose ELD-Net, a unified deep learning framework for accurate and efficient saliency detection. We show that hand-crafted features can provide complementary information to enhance saliency detection that uses only high-level features. Our method uses both low-level and high-level features for saliency detection. High-level features are extracted using GoogLeNet, and low-level features evaluate the relative importance of a local region using its differences from other regions in an image. The two feature maps are independently encoded by the convolutional and the ReLU layers. The encoded low-level and high-level features are then combined by concatenation and convolution. Finally, a linear fully connected layer is used to evaluate the saliency of a queried region. A full resolution saliency map is obtained by querying the saliency of each local region of an image. Since the high-level features are encoded at low resolution, and the encoded high-level features can be reused for every query region, our ELD-Net is very fast. Our experiments show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art deep learning-based saliency detection methods.</P>

        Development of a Non-Invasive Liver Fibrosis Score Based on Transient Elastography for Risk Stratification in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

        Background: In non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), transient elastography (TE) is an accurate non-invasive method to identify patients at risk of advanced fibrosis (AF). We developed a diabetes-specific, non-invasive liver fibrosis score based on TE to facilitate AF risk stratification, especially for use in diabetes clinics where TE is not readily available. Methods: Seven hundred sixty-six adults with type 2 diabetes and NAFLD were recruited and randomly divided into a training set (n=534) for the development of diabetes fibrosis score (DFS), and a testing set (n=232) for internal validation. DFS identified patients with AF on TE, defined as liver stiffness (LS) ≥9.6 kPa, based on a clinical model comprising significant determinants of LS with the lowest Akaike information criteria. The performance of DFS was compared with conventional liver fibrosis scores (NFS, FIB-4, and APRI), using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values (NPV). Results: DFS comprised body mass index, platelet, aspartate aminotransferase, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and albuminuria, five routine measurements in standard diabetes care. Derived low and high DFS cut-offs were 0.1 and 0.3, with 90% sensitivity and 90% specificity, respectively. Both cut-offs provided better NPVs of >90% than conventional fibrosis scores. The AUROC of DFS for AF on TE was also higher (P<0.01) than the conventional fibrosis scores, being 0.85 and 0.81 in the training and testing sets, respectively. Conclusion: Compared to conventional fibrosis scores, DFS, with a high NPV, more accurately identified diabetes patients at-risk of AF, who need further evaluation by hepatologists.
