        Hysteretic Mechanical Behaviour of an Eccentrically Loaded Partially-Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Bridge Pier under Out-of-Plane Horizontal Cyclic Loading

        To investigate the hysteretic behaviour of an eccentrically loaded partially-concrete-filled steel tubular (PCFST) bridge pier in an out-of-plane horizontal direction, a quasi-static experiment and finite element (FE) analysis of steel tubular columns were carried out. In this study, four PCFST column specimens were tested under constant eccentrically loaded and out-of-plane horizontal cyclic loading. The elasto-plastic behaviour and failure mode of these specimens were investigated. Secondly, the FE models of these four experimental PCFST columns were established, through comparisons with the experimental results, the validity of the selected elements, mesh division, the contact relationship between the concrete and the steel pipe, and the boundary conditions of FE models were verified. Thirdly, 30 FE models of PCFST bridge piers were analyzed to ascertain the effects of slenderness ratio λ, radius-thickness ratio Rt, and vertical load eccentricity ratio e/L on ultimate strength and ductility. Finally, an empirical formula was proposed to describe the ultimate strength and ductility of such bridge piers for engineering application under complicated loading conditions.

        Bearing capacity of an eccentric tubular concrete-filled steel bridge pier

        In this paper, the bearing capacity of a non-eccentric and eccentric tubular, concrete-filled, steel bridge pier was studied through the finite element method. Firstly, to verify the validity of the numerical analysis, the finite element analysis of four steel tube columns with concrete in-fill was carried out under eccentric loading and horizontal cyclic loading. The analytical results were compared with experimental data. Secondly, the effects of the eccentricity of the vertical loading on the seismic performance of these eccentrically loaded steel tubular bridge piers were considered. According to the simulated results, with increasing eccentricity ratio, the bearing capacity on the eccentric side of a steel tubular bridge pier (with concrete in-fill) is greatly reduced, while the capacity on the opposite side is improved. Moreover, an empirical formula was proposed to describe the bearing capacity of such bridge piers under non-eccentric and eccentric load. This will provide theoretical evidence for the seismic design of the eccentrically loaded steel tubular bridge piers with concrete in-fill.

        The Mechanical Properties of A New Corrugated Steel Plate Damper and Its Application in A Steel Arch Bridge

        An innovative application of a new corrugated steel plate damper (CSPD) in steel arch bridges is proposed to enhance their seismic performance. The mechanical properties of the CSPD were investigated by static and quasi-static parametric analysis using ABAQUS software, and validation of the CSPD finite element models was conducted by comparing the numerical results with published experimental results. The results indicate that the CSPD has desirable mechanical properties and hysteretic performance when the geometric design parameters lie within a reasonable range. Then a selected CSPD with reasonable geometric design parameterswas installed on the side piers of upper-deck type steel truss arch bridge to explore the resulting improvement in the seismic behaviour of the original arch bridge. The displacement and force responses indicate that the selected CSPD can improve energy dissipation and the seismic behaviour of the arch bridge in transverse and longitudinal directions in major earthquakes.

      • 중국의 인민폐와 주요 국가의 통화 국제화 비교 및 함의

        중국은 경제와 무역규모가 급속하게 성장하면서 세계경제에서 차지하는 위상도 상승했다. 미국경제와 함께 G2가 된 중국은 2008년 미국 발 금융위기로 인한 달러화의 위상 하락을 계기로 인민폐의 국제화를 본격적으로 추진하고 있다. 본 논문은 과거 국제통화체제 하에서 주요 국가의 통화가 국제적으로 통용되었던 사례들을 정리했다. 특히 영국의 파운드화, 미국의 달러화의 국제통화로서의 역할 변화에 주목하였으며, 비교적 최근 사례인 일본 엔화의 국제화와 유럽통합 이후 유로화의 출범에 대한 사례도 추가했다. 주요국들의 통화가 국제화된 과거 사례들과 비교하면, 중국정부의 적극적인 국제화 추진에도 불구하고 인민폐의 국제화 수준은 경제규모, 무역규모, 통화가치 안정, 국제금융센터 등 4가지 조건에서 아직 미흡한 수준으로 판단된다. 본 논문은 인민폐가 글로벌 기축통화의 위상에 접근하려면, 첫째, 안정적인 경제성장 지속, 둘째, 글로벌 무역확대 주도, 셋째, 환율제도 개혁과 통화가치 안정, 마지막으로 상하이 등을 명실상부한 국제금융센터로 육성하기 위한 금융시장의 추가 개방과 개혁정책이 필요하다고 강조했다. The rapid growth of the Chinese economy and trade volume has also led to an increase in the share of the global economy. China, which has become the G2 along with the U.S. economy, is pushing for the inter-nationalization of RMB in earnest in the wake of the U.S.-sparked financial crisis in 2008. This paper analyzed examples of international currency usage of major countries under the international monetary system in the past. In particular, this paper noted the change in the role of the British pound and the US dollar in the international monetary system, and the case of the relatively recent internationalization of the Japanese yen and the launch of the euro after European integration was added to the analysis. When referring to past cases in which the currencies of representative major countries have been internationalized, it is judged that the People’s Republic of China’s RMB is a little short of the four necessary filling conditions: economic scale, trade scale, currency value stability, and the presence of the international finance center. In order for Chinese RMB to raise its status as the international currency, it is essential to foster the People’s Republic of China as an international financial center and globalization of domestic financial market, sustainable growth of its economy, expansion of trade through opening up, reform of its exchange rate system to maintain its value stability.

        Oral Green Tea Catechins Transiently Lower Plasma Glucose Concentrations in Female db/db Mice

        Polyphenols, including green tea catechins, are secondary plant compounds often discussed in the context of health-promoting potential. Evidence for such effects is mainly derived from epidemiological and cell culture studies. The aim of the present study was to investigate antidiabetic, antiadipogenic, and anti-inflammatory effects at nonpharmacological doses in an obese diabetic mouse model that exerts early relevant clinical signs of non–insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Female db/db mice received a flavonoid-poor diet either without additive, with rosiglitazone (RSG, 0.02 g/kg diet), or with green tea extract (low-dose green tea extract [LGTE] and high-dose green tea extract [HGTE], 0.1 and 1 g/kg diet). Food and water were freely available. The body weight was monitored weekly. Blood was sampled (12-h fasted) from the tail vein on day 28 and analyzed for glucose, cholesterol, triacylglycerol, nonesterified fatty acids, insulin, adiponectin, and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1). Blood glucose was also analyzed on day 14. Furthermore, sICAM-1 release was investigated in tumor necrosis factor alpha-stimulated EAhy926 cells. After 14 days, fasting glycemia was improved by RSG or HGTE supplementation compared to controls. However, at the end of the study (day 28), only RSG exhibited glucose-lowering effects and induced plasma adiponectin concentrations, paralleled by higher body weight gain and reduced periuterine fat pads compared to controls. However, only GTE treatment reduced sICAM-1 release in vitro and in vivo. Nonpharmacological HGTE supplementation in db/db mice caused (1) no adiponectin-inducing or antiadipogenic effects, (2) reduced sICAM-1 release, thereby potentially exerting anti-inflammatory effects in the progressive diabetic state, and (3) a transient improvement in glycemia

        중국의 상품주택 가격 결정요인에 관한 실증분석

        본 연구는 2002년부터 2015년까지 중국 31개 지역의 연도별 패널데이터를 이용한 고정효과모형을 통해 중국 상품주택 가격의 결정요인을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 실증분석에서 얻은 주요 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전국 상품주택 가격의 결정요인 중에서 준공면적, 개발 기업의 개수, 토지 공급가격, 인구밀도, 1인당 GDP, 부동산 투자액이 모두 통계적으로 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 인구밀도와 1인당 GDP 변수가 상품주택 가격에 가장 큰 영향을 미치고 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 둘째, 동부 지역 상품주택 가격의 결정요인 중에서 인구밀도가 동부 상품주택 가격에 가장 큰 요인을 담당하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 중국 전국에서의 영향 역시 다른 변수들과 비교하여 아주 큰 것으로 나타났다. 향후 중국의 급속한 도시화에 따라 상품주택의 가격이 상승할 것으로 예상된다. 셋째, 중부 지역상품주택 가격의 결정요인 중에서 부동산 시장의 토지 공급 가격, 1인당 GDP 변수는 양(+)의 양향을 미치는 반면 부동산 개발 기업의 변수는 음(-)의 양향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 서부 지역 상품주택 가격의 결정요인 중에서 1인당 GDP(주민 소득)가 상품주택 가격에 큰 영향을 미치고 있다는 것을 확인한 반면 토지가격의 효과는 미미한 것으로 나타났다. 실증분석을 통해 얻은 결론은 중국정부가 부동산 가격을 낮게 유지하기 위해 효과적인 토지 공급 정책을 적극적으로 추진해야 한다는 것이다. The study conducted an empirical analysis on determining factors of housing prices in China by a fixed effect model using yearly panel data from 2002 to 2015 in 31 regions of China. First, it was found that among the determining factors of the nationwide housing price for commodities, the floor area, the number of developers, land supply prices, population density, per capita GDP, and real estate investment were all statistically significant. It was confirmed that the population density and per capita GDP variables have the biggest influence on the prices of commodities housing. Second, we found that among the determining factors for eastern commodity housing prices, population density plays the largest role in the price of eastern commodity housing. The influence across China was also great, compared to other variables. It is expected that the price of commodities houses will rise in the future as China’s rapid urbanization occurs. Third, among the determinants of housing prices in the central region, real estate market land supply prices and per capita GDP variables have positive effects, while real estate developers ’ variables have negative effects. Fourth, among the determinants of western commodity housing prices, it is confirmed that per capita GDP (per capita income) has a significant influence on the prices of commodities housing, whereas the effects of land prices have been insignificant. The empirical analysis suggests that Chinese government should actively pursue effective land and housing supply policies to keep property prices low.

        An Analysis on Determinants of Chinese RMB as the International Investment Currency

        Most studies have focused on the determinants of RMB as the international settlement currency, while relatively fewer studies have conducted in the aspects of investment and reserve currency functions. Therefore, this study seeks differentiation from the previous studies by analyzing the investment currency functions of RMB internationalization. We empirically analyzed the determinants of RMB’s function as an investment currency with the panel model. The analysis used triennial data from China and 33 countries for the period from 2007 to 2016. First, results of the empirical analysis verified that economy size and nominal exchange rate play an important role in RMB trading in the off-shore market during the overall period (2007-2016). Before the launch of the RQFII scheme (2007-2010), all explanatory variables were found not to be statistically significant in explaining RMB trading in the off-shore market. During the period after the launch of the RQFII scheme (2013-2016), only the nominal exchange rate turned out to affect RMB trading in the off-shore market. Second, the results of the empirical analysis focused on regions showed that in the Asia-Pacific region, economic size and nominal exchange rate are the major factors influencing RMB trading in the off-shore market. Only the nominal exchange rate was found to affect RMB trading in the off-shore market of Europe. All explanatory variables did not show effects on RMB’s function as an investment currency in the off-shore market of other regions (the Americas and Africa). The results of this empirical analysis provide a number of policy implications.

        Analysis of environment influencing factors in China based on STIRPAT model

        Since the reformation and the opening-up policy in 1978, China has achieved a high economic growth for about 30 years. However, the problem of economic disparity in China has been worsened than ever before, and the environment inequality is beginning to be more noticeable. China faces the challenge this environmental inequality. In this paper, we first calculated the Green Contribution Coefficient in the 31 provinces in 2000 and 2014, and then clarified the fact that there existed regional environmental inequality in China. Based on the STIRPAT model, various factors affecting environmental in China from 2000 to 2014 were analyzed by the regression analysis, using the panel data on industrial air pollution published by each ministry. We examined the hypothesis that the increase in GDP, secondary industry ratio, the energy industry investment has a negative influence on Chinese environment. The environmental inequality is to be balanced by the progress of industrial structures in the various regions of China.
