A simple one step wet-chemical method assisted by trisodium citrate was employed in the synthesis of BiOBr applied as a photocatalyst. Photocatalytic activity of the BiOBr was investigated for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye under visible light irradiation (>420 nm). The results indicated that trisodium citrate is more favorable to the formation of hierarchical architectures and reduces the particle size of BiOBr photocatalyst. BiOBr with hierarchical architectures exhibiting significantly higher catalytic activity than that with ordinary nanostructure. The significant improvement could be attributed to the high specific surface area (24.14m2·g1), average pore sizes (34.09 nm) and average pore volume (0.24 cm3·g1).

The identification of predictive markers to determine the triggering phase prior to the onset of osteoporosis is essential to mitigate further irrevocable deterioration. To determine the early warning signs before osteoporosis, we used the dynamic network biomarker (DNB) approach to analyze time-series gene expression data in a zebrafish osteoporosis model, which revealed that cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1 A (cdkn1a) is a core DNB. We found that cdkn1a negatively regulates osteogenesis, as evidenced by loss-of-function and gain-of-function studies. Specifically, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated cdkn1a knockout in zebrafish significantly altered skeletal development and increased bone mineralization, whereas inducible cdkn1a expression significantly contributed to osteoclast differentiation. We also found several mechanistic clues that cdkn1a participates in osteoclast differentiation by regulating its upstream signaling cascades. To summarize, in this study, we provided new insights into the dynamic nature of osteoporosis and identified cdkn1a as an early-warning signal of osteoporosis onset.

<P>Cyclic and acyclic azobenzene bridged porphyrin-dipyrrin derivatives were successfully prepared via Suzuki- Miyaura coupling reaction of alpha,alpha'-diborylated dipyrromethane with bromoazophenyl porphyrin or reaction of borylated porphyrin with dibromoazophenyl dipyrrin, and the corresponding porphyrin Bodipy derivatives were obtained by subsequent boron complexation. The cyclic porphyrin dipyrrin compound 3Ni was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The low fluorescence quantum yields of azobenzene bridged porphyrin Bodipy can be ascribed to the presence of the intramolecular charge transfer state.</P>

To understand the mechanism of hepatocyte differentiation during rat liver regeneration (LR) at the genetranscription level, Rat Genome 230 2.0 Array was used to determine the gene expression changes ofhepatocytes. Then the genes associated with cell differentiation and their signaling pathways were searched byNCBI, QIAGEN and KEGG webs, and their signaling activities were calculated by spectral function Ep(t)based on the expression profiles. The key genes associated with the signaling pathways and cell differentiationwere analyzed and verified by the same kind extraction method. The mechanism of hepatocyte differentiationduring rat LR was analyzed by Ingenuity Pathway Analysis 9.0 (IPA). The results showed that 42 signalingpathways regulated cell differentiation and the Ep(t) values of IL-9 signaling pathway and its JAK/STAT andPI3K/AKT branches, PEDF signaling pathway and its NF-κB and Ras/ERK branches were significantlyincreased in the progression phase (6–72 h after partial hepatectomy [PH]) of rat LR, and the Ep(t) values ofhepatocyte differentiation were also significantly increased. ERK/MAPK signaling pathway was significantlyincreased in the priming (0.5–6 h after PH) and progression phase, and hepatocyte differentiation were alsosignificantly increased. In conclusion, among the 42 signaling pathways that regulated cell differentiation, thesignaling activity of IL-9 signaling pathway and its JAK/STAT and PI3K/AKT branches, PEDF signalingactivity and its NF-κB and Ras/ERK branches, and ERK/MAPK signaling activity were significantly increasedand promoted hepatocyte differentiation in rat LR. Meanwhile, the expression of MYC involved in mentionedsignaling pathways and expression of AGT, BCL2, IL10, CCND1, PLAT, and NF1 related to celldifferentiation were increased significantly.

Due to increasing interest in the application of perovskites as promising adsorbents, the present study looks at how central composite design (CCD), a subset of response surface methodology (RSM), can statistically play a role in producing optimum lanthanum oxide-cobalt perovskite type nanoparticles (LaCoO3) by using a modified proteic synthesis method. The optimum LaCoO3 produced was tested for its capability in removing methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RhB) dyes from aqueous solution. Calcination temperature and calcination time were optimized with the responses being percentage yield, MO and RhB removal. The best temperature and calcination time obtained were 775 oC and 62mins, respectively, giving good and appreciable values for the three responses. The resulting optimal LaCoO3 was characterized by Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV/vis), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), pH of zero point charge (pHpzc) as well as BET analysis, yielding a mesoporous adsorbent with surface area of 61.130m2 g−1 as well as 223.55 and 239.45mg g−1 as the monolayer adsorption capacity values for MO and RhB, respectively. Freundlich model was the best in describing the equilibrium adsorption data with respect to both MO and RhB with the kinetic data for the two dyes both obeying pseudo-second-order kinetics model.

Tobacco ( Nicotiana tabacum L.) is an economic crop and a model organism for studies of plant biology and genetics. As an allotetraploid plant generated from interspecific hybridization, tobacco has a massive genome (4.5 Gb). Recently, a genetic map with 45,081 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers was constructed using whole-genome sequencing data for a tobacco population including 274 individuals. This provides a basis for quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping and genomic selection, which have been widely applied to other crops but have not been feasible in tobacco. Based on this high-density genetic map, we identified QTLs associated with important agronomic traits, chemical compounds in dry leaves, and hazardous substances in processed cigarettes. The LOD values for major QTLs were highest for agronomic traits, followed by chemical compounds and hazardous substances. In addition to the identification of molecular markers, we evaluated genomic selection models and found that BayesB had the highest prediction accuracy for the recombinant inbred line population. Our results offer new insights into the genetic mechanism underlying important traits, such as agronomic traits and quality-related chemical compounds in tobacco, and will be able to support the application of molecular breeding to tobacco.

A Bi6O6(OH)3(NO3)3·1.5H2O (BBN)/Bi2O2CO3 (BOC) heterojunction was designed for the first time via afacile hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic performance of catalysts was evaluated by degrading Rhodamine B(RhB) under simulated solar light irradiation. It was found that the degradation rate of RhB by 25 wt%BBN/BOC wasdramatically increased about 1.5 and 4.7 times compared with that of pure BOC and BBN, respectively. The enhancedphotocatalytic performance migth be attributed to the effective separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs, benefitingfrom the construction of heterojunction. Furthermore, the mechanism upon BBN/BOC composites photocatalystwas investigated, expecting this work will bring new insight into the theoretical study and application of semiconductorsmaterials.

Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to analyze the chronological changes in postoperative complications in surgical ulcerative colitis patients over the past decade in China and to investigate the potential parameters that contributed to the changes. Methods: Ulcerative colitis patients who underwent surgery during 2008–2017 were retrospectively enrolled from 13 hospitals in China. Postoperative complications were compared among different operation years. Risk factors for complications were identified by logistic regression analysis. Results: A total of 446 surgical ulcerative colitis patients were analyzed. Fewer short-term complications (24.8% vs. 41.0%, P=0.001) and more laparoscopic surgeries (66.4% vs. 25.0%, P<0.001) were found among patients who received surgery during 2014–2017 than 2008–2013. Logistic regression suggested that independent protective factors against short-term complications were a higher preoperative body mass index (odds ratio [OR], 0.870; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.785–0.964; P=0.008), laparoscopic surgery (OR, 0.391; 95% CI, 0.217–0.705; P=0.002) and elective surgery (OR, 0.213; 95% CI, 0.067–0.675; P=0.009). The chronological decrease in short-term complications was associated with an increase in laparoscopic surgery. Conclusions: Our data revealed a downward trend of short-term postoperative complications among surgical ulcerative colitis patients in China during the past decade, which may be due to the promotion of minimally invasive techniques among Chinese surgeons.
