Effects of A Short-term Cardio Tai Chi Program on Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Hemodynamic Parameters in Sedentary Adults: A Pilot Study

Timothy Sam-Kit Tin,Chi-Hsiu Daniel Weng,Patricia dos Santos Vigário,Arthur de Sá Ferreira 사단법인약침학회 2020 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.13 No.1

This study evaluates the effects of a short-term Cardio Tai Chi program on the cardiorespiratory fitness and hemodynamic parameters in sedentary adults. Thirty-one sedentary participants (age: 58 Æ 9 years, body mass: 63 Æ 12 kg) were subjected to an exercise program during 10 sessions over a 10-day period within 2 weeks. The Cardio Tai Chi program consisted in a series of three to five intervals lasting 90 s each at w70% maximal heart rate separated by 2-min of low-intensity recovery. Primary outcome measures were cardiorespiratory fitness (peak oxygen uptake, _ VO 2peak ) assessed by the Rockport walking test and resting hemodynamic parameters (systolic, diastolic, mean, and pulse pressures). We observed a significant difference of means on post-pre _ VO 2peak [4.5 ml/kg/ min, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.1 to 5.8, p Z 0.004], systolic blood pressure (-5.5 mmHg, 95% CI:-7.3 to -3.8, p Z 0.010) and pulse pressure (-3.7 mmHg, 95% CI: -5.2 to -2.3, p Z 0.028). No significant differences were observed for diastolic pressure (À1.8 mmHg, 95% CI: -2.6 to -1.0, p Z 0.226), mean blood pressure (2.5 mmHg, 95% CI: 1.4 to 3.6, p Z 0.302), or resting heart rate (-0.9 beat/min, 95% CI: -2.0 to 0.1, p Z 0.631). Our findings suggest that engaging in a short-term Cardio Tai Chi program can improve cardiorespiratory fitness and hemodynamic parameters in sedentary adults.

Active vibration control: considering effect of electric field on coefficients of PZT patches

Sukesha Sharma,Renu Vig,Navin Kumar 국제구조공학회 2015 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.16 No.6

Piezoelectric coefficient and dielectric constant of PZT-5H vary with electric field. In this work, variations of these coefficients with electric field are included in finite element modelling of a cantilevered plate instrumented with piezoelectric patches. Finite element model is reduced using modal truncation and then converted into state-space. First three modal displacements and velocities are estimated using Kalman observer. Negative first modal velocity feedback is used to control the vibrations of the smart plate. Three cases are considered v.i.z case 1: in which variation of piezoelectric coefficient and dielectric constant with electric field is not considered in finite element model and not considered in Kalman observer, case 2: in which variation of piezoelectric coefficient and dielectric constant with electric field is considered in finite element model and not considered in Kalman observer and case 3: in which variation of piezoelectric coefficient and dielectric constant with electric field is considered in finite element model as well as in Kalman observer. Simulation results show that appreciable amount of change would appear if variation of piezoelectric coefficient and dielectric constant with r.m.s. value of electric field is considered.

Effect of Transgenic Rhizobacteria Overexpressing Citrobacter braakii appA on Phytate-P Availability to Mung Bean Plants

        ( Patel,Kuldeep J. ),( Saurabh Vig ),( G. Nareshkumar ),( G. Archana ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2010 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.20 No.11

Rhizosphere microorganisms possessing phytase activity are considered important for rendering phytate-phosphorus (P) available to plants. In the present study, the Citrobacter braakii phytase gene (appA) was overexpressed in rhizobacteria possessing plant growth promoting (PGP) traits, for increasing their potential as bioinoculants. AppA was cloned under the lac promoter in the broadhost- range expression vector pBBR1MCS-2. Transformation of the recombinant construct pCBappA resulted in high constitutive phytase activity in all of the eight rhizobacterial strains belonging to genera Pantoea, Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas (two strains), Rhizobium (two strains), and Ensifer that were studied. Transgenic rhizobacterial strains were found to display varying levels of phytase activity, ranging from 10-folds to 538-folds higher than the corresponding control strains. The transgenic derivative of Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0, a well-characterized plant growth promoting rhizobacterium, showed the highest expression of phytase (~8 U/mg) activity in crude extracts. Although all transformants showed high phytase activity, rhizobacteria having the ability to secrete organic acid showed significantly higher release of P from Caphytate in buffered minimal media. AppA overexpressing rhizobacteria showed increased P content, and dry weight (shoot) or shoot/ root ratio of mung bean (Vigna radiata) plants, to different extents, when grown in semisolid agar (SSA) medium containing Na-phytate or Ca-phytate as the P sources. This is the first report of the overexpression of phytase in rhizobacterial strains and its exploitation for plant growth enhancement.

The main aim of this case is to analyse the importance Paytm holds in a common man’s life and its role in moving India towards a cashless economy by familiarising people with the concept of digital payments. By the time you finish reading this case, approximately 8200 odd users would have registered themselves with Paytm services.

      • Radio and infrared study of southern H II regions G346.056−0.021 and G346.077−0.056

        Das, S. R.,Tej, A.,Vig, S.,Liu, T.,Ghosh, S. K.,Chandra, C. H. I. EDP Sciences 2018 Astronomy and astrophysics Vol.612 No.-

Aim. We present a multiwavelength study of two southern Galactic H II regions G346.056−0.021 and G346.077−0.056 which are located at a distance of 10.9 kpc. The distribution of ionized gas, cold and warm dust, and the stellar population associated with the two H II regions are studied in detail using measurements at near-infrared, mid-infrared, far-infrared, submillimeter and radio wavelengths.

Methods. The radio continuum maps at 1280 and 610 MHz were obtained using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope to probe the ionized gas. The dust temperature, column density, and dust emissivity maps were generated using modified blackbody fits in the far-infrared wavelength range 160-500 μm. Various near- and mid-infrared color and magnitude criteria were adopted to identify candidate ionizing star(s) and the population of young stellar objects in the associated field.

Results. The radio maps reveal the presence of diffuse ionized emission displaying distinct cometary morphologies. The 1280 MHz flux densities translate to zero age main sequence spectral types in the range O7.5V-O7V and O8.5V-O8V for the ionizing stars of G346.056−0.021 and G346.077−0.056, respectively. A few promising candidate ionizing star(s) are identified using near-infrared photometric data. The column density map shows the presence of a large, dense dust clump enveloping G346.077−0.056. The dust temperature map shows peaks towards the two H II regions. The submillimeter image shows the presence of two additional clumps, one being associated with G346.056−0.021. The masses of the clumps are estimated to range between ~1400 and 15250 M⊙. Based on simple analytic calculations and the correlation seen between the ionized gas distribution and the local density structure, the observed cometary morphology in the radio maps is better explained invoking the champagne-flow model.

Mechanical Thrombectomy Access for All? Challenges in Increasing Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke in the United States

        Sushanth Rao Aroor,Kaiz S. Asif,Jennifer Potter-Vig,Arun Sharma,Bijoy K. Menon,Violiza Inoa,Cynthia B. Zevallos,Jose G. Romano,Santiago Ortega-Gutierrez,Larry B. Goldstein,Dileep R. Yavagal 대한뇌졸중학회 2022 Journal of stroke Vol.24 No.1

Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is the most effective treatment for selected patients with an acute ischemic stroke due to emergent large vessel occlusions (LVOs). There is an urgent need to identify and address challenges in access to MT to maximize the numbers of patients who can benefit from this treatment. Barriers in access to MT include delays in evaluation and accurate diagnosis of LVO leading to inappropriate triage, logistical delays related to availability of facilities and trained interventionalists, and financial hurdles that affect treatment reimbursement. Collection of regional data related to these barriers is critical to better understand current access gaps and a measurable access score to thrombectomy could be useful to plan local public health intervention.

Peptide Transporter Substrate Identification during Permeability Screening in Drug Discovery: Comparison of Transfected MDCK-hPepT1 Cells to Caco-2 Cells

        Praveen. V. Balimane,Saeho Chong,Karishma Patel,Yong Quan,Julita Timoszyk,한용해,Bonnie Wang,Balvinder Vig,Teresa N. Faria 대한약학회 2007 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.30 No.4

The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of stably transfected MDCK-hPepT1 cells for identifying peptide transporter substrates in early drug discovery and compare the characteristics of this cell line with Caco-2 cells. MDCK-hPepT1, MDCK-mock, and Caco-2 cells grown to confluence on 24-well Transwell‚ were used for this study. Expression levels of different transporter proteins (PepT1, PepT2, P-gp) in these cell lines were assessed by qRTPCR. Permeability studies were conducted in parallel in all the cells with a diverse set of peptide substrates using the optimized experimental condition: 100 µM, apical pH 6.0, basolateral pH 7.4, 2 hr incubation at 37°C. Permeability studies were also conducted with classical P-gp substrates (tested in bi-directional mode) and paracellularly absorbed probes to investigate the differences between the cell lines. As expected, MDCK-hPepT1 cells express significantly higher level of PepT1 mRNA compared to both Caco-2 and MDCK-mock cells. Efflux transporter, P-gp, was expressed adequately in all the cell lines. Permeability studies demonstrated that classical peptide substrates had significantly higher permeability in stably transfected MDCK-hPepT1 cells compared to MDCK-mock and Caco-2 cells. The transfected MDCKhPepT1 cells were qualitatively similar to Caco-2 cells with respect to functional P-gp efflux activity and paracellular pore activity. Stably transfected MDCK-hPepT1 cells have been demonstrated as a viable alternative to Caco-2 cells for estimating the human absorption potential of peptide transporter substrates. These cells behave similar to Caco-2 cells with regards to Pgp efflux and paracellular pore activity but demonstrate greater predictability of absorption values for classical peptide substrates (for which Caco-2 cells under-estimate oral absorption).

Preoperative risk factors for massive transfusion, prolonged ventilation requirements, and mortality in patients undergoing liver transplantation

        Dennis Danforth,Rodney A. Gabriel,Anthony I. Clark,Beverly Newhouse,Swapnil Khoche,Sanjana Vig,Ramon Sanchez,Ulrich H. Schmidt 대한마취통증의학회 2020 Korean Journal of Anesthesiology Vol.73 No.1

Background: Despite improvements in techniques and management of liver transplant patients, numerous perioperative complications that contribute to perioperative mortality remain. Models to predict intraoperative massive blood transfusion, prolonged mechanical ventilation, or in-hospital mortality in liver transplant recipients have not been identified. In this study we aim to identify preoperative factors associated with the above mentioned complications. Methods: A retrospective observational analysis was conducted on data collected from 124 orthotopic liver transplants performed at a single institution between 2014 and 2017. A multivariable logistic regression using backwards elimination was performed for three defined outcomes (massive transfusion ≥ 10 units packed red blood cells (PRBC), prolonged mechanical ventilation > 24 h, and in-hospital mortality) to identify associations with preoperative characteristics. Results: Statistically significant (P < 0.05) associations with massive transfusion ≥ 10 units PRBC were hepatocellular carcinoma and preoperative transfusion of PRBC. Significant associations with prolonged mechanical ventilation > 24 h were hepatitis C, alcoholic hepatitis, elevated preoperative alanine aminotransferase, and hepatorenal syndrome. Male gender was protective for requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation. End-stage renal disease and hepatitis B were significantly associated with increased in-hospital mortality. Conclusions: This study identified risk factors associated with common perioperative complications of liver transplantation. These factors may assist practitioners in risk stratification and may form the basis for further investigations of potential interventions to mitigate these risks.
