Andropogon gayanus is an important grass due to its high biomass production, drought tolerance and favorable growth on low fertility acidic soils. Currently, there is little research on the impact of growth stage on the nutritional quality or the degree of $CH_4$ production that may arise from this forage during ruminal fermentation. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of regrowth stage of A. gayanus on its chemical composition, in vitro production of gas and CH4, as well as in vitro dry matter (DM) digestibility when grown under tropical Brazilian conditions and conserved as hay or as silage. The nutritional value of A. gayanus grass declined with increasing maturity; however digestible DM yield linearly increased. After 112 d of regrowth, A. gayanus produced higher quality silage (higher lactate and lower pH and butyrate content) and higher DM yield. However, the low levels of crude protein at this time would make protein supplementation a necessity for proper rumen fermentation. No differences in $CH_4$ kinetic parameters were found with advancing maturity or preservation method (hay or silage).

Background: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 outbreak has been identified as a pandemic and global health emergency. It presents as a severe acute respiratory disease. The rapid dissemination of the disease created challenges for healthcare systems and forced healthcare workers (HCWs) to deal with many clinical and nonclinical stresses. The aim of our research is to describe work conditions, symptoms experienced by HCWs, worries about contagion, and generalized anxiety symptoms and compare those findings across regions in Spain. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey. Critical care units throughout Spain were included. The sample comprised HCWs working in intensive care units from March to May 2020. We assessed work variables, physical symptoms, worries about contagion, and anxiety (generalized anxiety disorder-7 questionnaire). Results: The final sample comprised 448 surveys. Among the respondents, 86.9% (n=389) were nursing professionals, and 84.8% (n=380) were women. All participants cared for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients during the study period. Workload during the pandemic in Madrid was judged to be higher than in other regions (P<0.01). The availability of personal protective equipment was found to be higher in Cataluña. The most frequently experienced symptom was headaches (78.1%). Worries about self-infection and the possibility of infecting others received mean scores of 3.11 and 3.75, respectively. Mean scores for generalized anxiety levels were 11.02, with 58.7% of the professionals presenting with generalized anxiety syndrome during the assessment. Conclusions: In this study, we found high levels of anxiety among HCWs caring directly for COVID-19 patients, which could produce long-term psychological alterations that still need to be assessed.
Disaggregating the Coffee Supply Chain Network in Benguet, Philippines
Dia Noelle F. Velasco,Jeanette Angeline B. Madamba,Loida E. Mojica,Jimmy B. Williams The International Academy of Global Business and T 2016 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.12 No.1
Baguio City and the municipality of La Trinidad are the centers of coffee trading in Benguet and the Cordillera Region in the Philippines. The study examines the coffee supply chain network in both places while providing an overview of the global, national, and local coffee industry, explaining the relationships among the players in the supply chain network at the disaggregate level, determining the issues, weaknesses, and gaps, and offering recommendations for each supply chain and the entire network. Methodologies employed were key informant interviews of farmers, traders and coffee shop operators, visual observations and secondary data gathering, and descriptive analysis. Findings reveal that Benguet coffee supply chains have a complex and complicated networks of chain participants, interactions, and relationships. Seven supply chains which comprise the whole supply chain network in the area were identified with varying degrees of relational ties. Recommended interventions include developing road networks in the area, providing good quality planting materials, and utilizing financing products or schemes that are friendly to chain participants. Some investment entry points at the network level are the establishment of a coffee institute or center and coffee processing and/or warehousing or storage facilities.

Background/Aims To investigate the intra-rater (test-retest) reliability of the diagnosis of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) as measured by the Questionnaire on Pediatric Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, Rome IV version (QPGS-IV) in children. Methods A prospective cohort study was conducted in a public school in Cali, Colombia. Children and adolescents between 11 and 18 years of age were given the self-report Spanish version of the QPGS-IV at day 0 (baseline) and at day 2 (48 hours later). Results The study protocol was completed by 215 children, of which 97 (45%) were excluded from analysis due to the inability to follow the questionnaire’s instructions. The final analysis included data of 118 children (mean age 15.0 ± SD 1.8 years old, 58.5% boys). The most common diagnoses were functional dyspepsia, functional constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome. We found a moderate intra-rater reliability (κ = 0.61-0.65) for diagnosing an FGID in general, a functional abdominal pain disorder, and the diagnosis of functional dyspepsia. We found a weak intra-rater reliability (κ = 0.46-0.54) for diagnosing a functional defecation disorder, functional constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and the postprandial distress syndrome subtype of functional dyspepsia. Conclusions Our study shows that a large proportion of children cannot adequately complete the QPGS-IV and that the intra-rater reliability among those who did adequately follow the instructions is moderate. We advise to test the children’s understanding of the instructions prior to completion of questionnaires and recommend to not rely exclusively on a self-reported questionnaire to select, recruit, or evaluate pediatric patients for FGIDs for research purposes. Halal Broiler Processing: The Case of Bounty Agro-Ventures Inc. and the Vitarich Corporation
Ayesha Mae P. Pahm,Dia Noelle F. Velasco,Glenn N. Baticados,Nanette A. Aquino 한국무역연구원 2017 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.13 No.2
The study aimed to present an overview of the implementation of Halal practices in the broiler operation of Bounty Agro Ventures, Inc. (BAVI) and the VITARICH Corporation (VITARICH) in Davao City. Furthermore, it was conducted to increase the awareness of consumers, producers, processors and distributors on the concept of Halal and its benefits when applied in the broiler industry. This paper used descriptive research design with a series of key informant interviews conducted with the personnel from BAVI and VITARICH on their Halal broiler production and processing practices. The results showed that the broiler processing operations of the two integrators are Halal-certified by Islamic Dawa’h Council of the Philippines (IDCP) and Mindanao Halal Authority (MINHA), and are following the Halal practices specified by the Halal certifiers. However, the broiler production operations of BAVI and VITARICH are not certified Halal but, to maintain Halal integrity of the broilers, they do not feed the animals porcine meals or feeds with pork ingredients. The lack of a unified Halal certifying body and Halal practices, and the questionable Halal credibility of broiler chicken pose the biggest concern for the Halal broiler processing industry. The limited availability, higher price and possible sources of contamination of Halal feeds were critical issues for the industry along with the limited infrastructure/facilities for Halal broiler slaughtering. It was recommended that a unification of Halal certifying organizations and standards and proper support infrastructure be established and made a priority.
Parallel Force-Position Control Scheme with Fuzzy Gain Tuning for Single Port Laparoscopic Surgery
Carlos J. Perez-del-Pulgar,V. F. Munoz,Juan J. Velasco,Ruben Gomez 제어로봇시스템학회 2013 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2013 No.10
This paper proposes a navigation method for manipulators which handle a surgical instrument or robotic platform introduced through a SILS multiport trocar. This method is based on a parallel position and force control which allow to the manipulator makes movements around the fulcrum point making the minimum force in the patient’s abdomen. In order to avoid the hysteresis effect due to the space between the instrument and the trocar when the instrument is inserted, a fuzzy gain scheduler has been designed. These algorithms have been implemented in a six degrees of freedom manipulator with a force sensor in the end effector. Finally, the experimental results are shown in order to demonstrate how it works in a real environment.
Value Chaining in the Philippine Processed Fish Industry
Jalyza Maye M. Jalbuena,DiaNoelle F. Velasco,Jeanette Angeline B. Madamba,Glenn N. Baticados 아시아무역학회 2017 Journal of Asia Trade and Business Vol.4 No.1
This study aimed to analyze the value chain network of dried and smoked fish players in Lucena City, Quezon Province, Philippines. Specifically, it aimed to present the characteristics and relationship dynamics of players in the processed fish value chain network; determine the costs and profit, marketing, and value addition at different stages in the value chain; to identify possible investment entry points and government interventions and the issues, gaps, and weaknesses of the value chains; and to recommend solutions to address the problems and capture trade opportunities. Findings revealed that Chain 1 was the strongest and Chains 3 and 4 were weak chains based on relationship dynamics, transaction costs and value addition. Processors had the highest value addition in all chains except for Chain 2 where the wholesaler-retailers had the highest value addition. Identified issues included: bad weather conditions, seasonality, and access to capital, minimal research and technology development, limited resources for product presentation, high input costs, limited public market space, payment delays, changing customer preference, and lack of government support. Engaging in aquaculture farming, putting up modern fish processing plants and building cold storage facilities are possible investment entry points, offering trade opportunities for both current and prospective value chain network players.

This paper determined the awareness of the respondents, namely the commercial swine farm raisers in Ibaan and Lipa City, Batangas, to GAHP and the certification process. Furthermore, the study assessed the compliance of the farms according to the GAHP standards. In presenting and assessing the various farm operations, frequency percentages and descriptive analysis were used. The results showed that majority of the respondents had were unaware of the concept of GAHP. Furthermore, all were not aware of the GAHP certification process. In assessing the compliance of the farms, it was observed that farms are generally adopting GAHP but were unaware. Constraints to compliance and certification determined were the lack of awareness, noncompulsory certification, compliance to documents, confidentiality and cost. Drivers for better GAHP compliance and certification included were the government, market, and the companies engaged in contract growing. Recommendations were to conduct more information disseminations, stricter government enforcements, and improved branding for consumers to improve the GAHP situation in the country.
