Which Model of Biological Plausibility for Language?: The Case of “What Darwin Got Wrong”

( Francesco Alessio Ursini ) 서강대학교 언어정보연구소 2013 언어와 정보 사회 Vol.19 No.-

Ursini, Francesco-Alessio(2013), “Which Model of Biological Plausibility for Language?: The Case of ``What Darwin Got Wrong`` ”, Language & Information Society 19. The goal of this paper is to discuss some of the conceptual consequences of the arguments put forward in What Darwin Got Wrong, for a broader theory of the biolinguistic approach. The book offers arguments against “New Synthesis” approaches to Evolutionary Theory, that are particularly germane to biolinguistic matters. One main contention is that only approaches to evolutionary facts that capture the “laws of form” observed across living organisms can be theoretically and empirically adequate. However, the book does not investigate whether this contention applies to linguistic matters as well. This issue is addressed in the paper, and it is argued that organism-internal properties, which can be captured via the formal notion of “conservativity”, must be found in language as well. Therefore, it is argued that only those lin-guistic theories that capture these properties, be they about syntactic, semantic or acquisition matters alike can be considered as biolinguistically plausible.

The Interpretation of Spatial “At”: An Experimental Study

( Francesco Alessio Ursini ),( Nobuaki Akagi ) 서울대학교 인지과학연구소 2013 Journal of Cognitive Science Vol.14 No.1

This paper presents an experimental study on the interpretation of the spatial preposition at in adult speakers, based on a variant of the Truth Value Judgment Task. It is shown that speakers can interpret at as denoting a spatial relation that stands in the “lexical entailment” relation with other spatial prepositions (e.g. inside, in front of, on top of, behind). For instance, if multiple located entities are involved in this relation, then they may occupy locations that can be “internal”, “external”, or placed on different verses of the same direction, e.g. in front or behind a certain landmark object. It is discussed which semantic hypothesis correctly predicts these findings, and what the implications could be, for a theory of spatial prepositions and their Semantics.

On spatial nouns and adpositions in Mandarin

        ( Francesco-alessio Ursini ),( Haiping Long ) 한국외국어대학교 언어연구소 2018 언어와 언어학 Vol.0 No.81

The goal of this paper is to present and discuss data shedding light on the relation between Mandarin spatial nouns and adpositions. It is shown that spatial nouns can also participate in constructions usually including prepositions, and postpositions or “localisers” (e.g. Basic Locative Construction, discourse ellipsis, locative inversion), mediated via the presence of the possessive marker de. An account of these seldom discussed data is offered, based on Lexical Syntax. The core proposal is that adpositions and spatial nouns can combine to form adpositional phrases. However, spatial nouns have morpho-syntactic properties restricting their distribution in these phrases, which is akin to those displayed by postpositions/localisers. Therefore, spatial nouns and localisers can be better conceived as sub-types of a “place word” nominal category.

Acupuncture as an alternative or in addition to conventional treatment for chronic non-specific low back pain: Systematic review and meta-analysis

        Giovanardi Carlo Maria,Gonzalez-Lorenzo Marien,Poini Alessandra,Marchi Eleonora,Culcasi Antonio,Ursini Francesco,Faldini Cesare,Martino Alberto Di,Mazzanti Umberto,Campesato Emanuela,Matrà Annunzio,Ce 한국한의학연구원 2023 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.12 No.3

Background Conventional therapies (CTs), pharmacological (PH) and non–pharmacological (NPH), do not always achieve benefits in the treatment of chronic low back pain (CLBP). We assessed efficacy and safety of acupuncture for CLBP as alternative or addition to CT. Methods We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing acupuncture alone or in combination with CT to CT. We searched Medline, Cochrane Library, Embase up to May 2022. We assessed risk of bias with the original Cochrane tool and GRADE certainty of evidence. Results were pooled through meta-analysis. Results Ten RCTs (2122 participants) were included comparing acupuncture versus CT and 6 (374 participants) comparing acupuncture plus CT to CT alone. Comparing acupuncture with NPH or PH, no differences were found for pain and disability. Comparing with combined PH and NPH, pain and disability were reduced (SMD=-0.50, 95%CI-0.62 to -0.37; SMD=-0.71, 95%CI-1.17 to -0.24). Comparing acupuncture plus NPH with NPH alone, pain and disability were reduced (SMD=-0.70, 95%CI-0.94 to -0.46; SMD=-0.95, 95%CI-1.36 to -0.54). Comparing acupuncture plus PH with PH alone, pain and disability were reduced (MD=-0.21,8 95%CI-433.28 to -10.42; MD=-3.1, 95%CI-4.87 to -1.83). Comparing acupuncture plus combined treatment versus combined treatment alone, no differences were found in pain, while disability was reduced (MD=-3.40 95%CI-5.17 to -1.63). No studies assessed adverse event. Certainty of evidence ranged from moderate to very low. Conclusion We are uncertain whether acupuncture is more effective and safer than CT. In the comparisons without estimates’ imprecision, acupuncture showed promising results. Acupuncture could be an option based on patients’ preferences.
