Understanding Taiwanese Adolescents’ English Learning Selves through Parental Expectations

HungTzu Huang 아시아영어교육학회 2017 The Journal of Asia TEFL Vol.14 No.2

This paper explores the interplay of Taiwanese adolescent English learners’ motivational selves and their parents’ expectations, with a special focus the identified perceptions of both teenage leaners and their parents towards English learning as a duty and obligation. Using the L2 Motivational Self System (L2MSS, Dörnyei, 2009), the qualitative study foregrounds the cultural and relational aspects of the self system in understanding language learning motivation. Results from semi-structured interviews suggest that parental expectations of children’s English learning exhibit a duality characterized by the hope that their children will become successful members of the globalized world and a belief that English learning is a basic responsibility for their children. Adolescent language learners’ and their parents’ actual selves, including their identification with societal roles and social obligations, mediate between parents’ investments in their children’s English education and teenage learners’ perceived obligations to meet parental expectations. The paper concludes by suggesting further research on parental expectations and the development of global selves, and on the synergized effect of language learners’ actual selves and future self-guides in motivating language learning.

Implementation of a bio-inspired two-mode structural health monitoring system

        Tzu-Kang Lin,Li-Chen Yu,Kuo-Chun Chang,Anne Kiremidjian,Chang-Hung Ku 국제구조공학회 2011 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.8 No.1

A bio-inspired two-mode structural health monitoring (SHM) system based on the Naïve Bayes (NB) classification method is discussed in this paper. To implement the molecular biology based Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) array concept in structural health monitoring, which has been demonstrated to be superior in disease detection, two types of array expression data have been proposed for the development of the SHM algorithm. For the micro-vibration mode, a two-tier auto-regression with exogenous (AR-ARX)process is used to extract the expression array from the recorded structural time history while an ARX process is applied for the analysis of the earthquake mode. The health condition of the structure is then determined using the NB classification method. In addition, the union concept in probability is used to improve the accuracy of the system. To verify the performance and reliability of the SHM algorithm, a downscaled eight-storey steel building located at the shaking table of the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) was used as the benchmark structure. The structural response from different damage levels and locations was collected and incorporated in the database to aid the structural health monitoring process. Preliminary verification has demonstrated that the structure health condition can be precisely detected by the proposed algorithm. To implement the developed SHM system in a practical application, a SHM prototype consisting of the input sensing module, the transmission module, and the SHM platform was developed. The vibration data were first measured by the deployed sensor, and subsequently the SHM mode corresponding to the desired excitation is chosen automatically to quickly evaluate the health condition of the structure. Test results from the ambient vibration and shaking table test showed that the condition and location of the benchmark structure damage can be successfully detected by the proposed SHM prototype system, and the information is instantaneously transmitted to a remote server to facilitate real-time monitoring. Implementing the bio-inspired two-mode SHM practically has been successfully demonstrated.

      • Quantifying and Clustering Texture Traits in Flowers of Genus Sinningia

        ( Tzu-ting Hung ),( Hao-chun Hsu ),( Yan-fu Kuo ) 한국농업기계학회 2018 한국농업기계학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.23 No.1

The flowers of genus Sinningia has a high degree of diversity in stripe and spot patterns. Delimiting these pattern as textural traits usually rely on horticulturalists’ judgment. However, the judgment by intuitive observation is subjective. This study aimed to quantify the stripe and spot pattern of genus Sinningia flowers automatically using machine vision and to cluster the textural traits using machine learning. The image of ventral petal was acquired using flatbed scanners. Two regions of interest (ROI), lobe region and tube region, were identified and were used for the feature quantification. The features of stripe and spot patterns were then quantified from the ROI using Gabor and Laplacian of Gaussian filters, respectively. The k-means clustering algorithm was next applied to the feature of patterns. The clusters were significantly associated with the textural traits.

      • Implementation of Obstacle Avoidance and Target Following based on Machine Learning for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle At Low Altitude

        ( Yu-hung Lin ),( Tzu-fang Lai ),( Po-yen Lin ),( Tse-min Chen ) 한국농업기계학회 2018 한국농업기계학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.23 No.1

This research developed an integrated system that consist of orientation sensing, balance control, machine vision recognition and shape sorting and avoidance of obstacle with which the UVA will meet the requirement of a low altitude shuttle in orchards and forest. This research also focused on employing machine learning as the main control core to achieve the performances of target following and obstacle avoidance for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). In order to keep the balance of a quadcopter, the orientation data from gyroscope and accelerometer will be the inputs of a double loop PID controller. Target is recognized by machine vision. Distances and shapes of obstacles are defined by a laser rangefinder that mounted on the vehicle. The control of UAV depending on the shape of the obstacle, execute different obstacle avoidance strategies. The results of experiment indicated that the complementary filter can compensate the defects of the gyroscope and accelerometer since it fixes steady-state error of gyroscope and oscillation in high frequency of accelerometer. Double-loop PID controller is more stable than single-loop PID controller is. Due to the stability of control board and safety of operators in target following and obstacle avoidance experiment, a three wheels omni robot was employed to conduct the performance evaluation. The final results validate that the novel UAV is equipped with the ability of shuttling among orchards in low-altitude, target following, classification of obstacle shape and obstacle avoidance.

Impact of the QFII Scheme on Investment-Cash Flow Sensitivity

        Jung-Hua Hung,Tzu-Yun Tseng 한국증권학회 2009 Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies Vol.38 No.3

Taiwan is an important emerging economy which has adopted a progressive strategy to open up its securities markets, mainly through the QFII (Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor) scheme. This paper examines Taiwan’s QFII experience so as to determine whether the implementation of such a policy has helped reduce corporate investment-cash flow sensitivity. Empirical results suggest that the launching of the QFII program as an interim institutionalization strategy to attract foreign capital into Taiwan’s securities markets has been successful in relaxing corporations’ investment-cash flow sensitivity.
