Removal of Trace Impurity from Limestone Using Flotation Techniques

<P>High grade limestone was obtained by removing trace impurities through reverse and carrier flotation techniques. A simple method for measuring the impurity content of limestone was developed by correlating the amount of impurities and the turbidity of suspensions of residue from limestone dissolved in 20% acetic acid.Impurity removal more than 50% with limestone recovery better than 85% was obtained under suitable conditions by both reverse flotation and carrier flotation using sodium oleate (NaOl) and dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) as collectors. Limestone containing more than 0.15 mass% impurity was used as the carrier. These results suggest that limestone treated by flotation can be used as high quality limestone in paper manufacturing.</P>
Dispersion-Flocculation Behavior of Fine Lead Particles in an Organic Solvent

<P>Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) is a good solvent for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and it has been proposed for use in PVC recycling. In the recycling process, fine particles of 3PbO·PbSO<SUB>4</SUB>·H<SUB>2</SUB>O, used as a thermal stabilizer in PVC products, are dispersed and not dissolved in the solvent. To establish methods for removing of 3PbO·PbSO<SUB>4</SUB>·H<SUB>2</SUB>O particles from the solvent, factors affecting the dispersion-flocculation behavior of the particles in MEK were investigated.The zeta potential and particle distribution of 3PbO·PbSO<SUB>4</SUB>·H<SUB>2</SUB>O particles in MEK solutions containing known amounts of H<SUB>2</SUB>O were measured. Above 5 vol%H<SUB>2</SUB>O in MEK solutions, the zeta potential of 3PbO·PbSO<SUB>4</SUB>·H<SUB>2</SUB>O particles approached zero and the flocculation of particles was achieved. In addition, it was found that Pb<SUP>2+</SUP> and Cl<SUP>−</SUP> affect the zeta potential of the particles. These results indicate that the dispersion-flocculation behavior of lead particles can be influenced by the concentration of H<SUB>2</SUB>O, Pb<SUP>2+</SUP>, and Cl<SUP>−</SUP> in MEK.</P>

<네그리튀드> 운동을 이해하기 위해서는 세 명의 창시자인 에메 세제르 Aime Cesaire, 레오폴 세다르 생고르 Leopold Sedar Senghor, 레옹 공트랑 다마스 Leon-Gontran Damas의 관계를 이해하는 것이 필요하다. 세제르와 다마스는 마르티니크에서 같은 고등학교를 다녔으며 이후 파리에서도 우정을 유지했고, 그곳에서 생고르를 만나 세 사람의 관계가 성립되었다. 특히 『에뛰디앙 누아르 L`etudiant noir 』 지를 통해 네그리튀드 운동이 시작되었다고도 할 수 있다. 그러나 이 세 인물 가운데, 다마스라는 인물에 대해 서는 많이 알려져 있지 않은데, 그 이유는 그가 90세 이상을 살았던 두 사람에 비해 66세의 나이에 일찍 사망한 때문이며, 미국에서 교수로 있으며 생을 마친 이력에서 찾을 수 있다. 다마스의 네그리튀드에 대한 관점은 생고르보다는 세제르에 가까워 상당히 급진적이었던 것으로 평가되고 있으며, 일례로 그의 대표작품 『Pigments』 이나 『Retour de Guyane』 는 그 내용이 국가의 존립에 영향을 줄 만큼 과격하다 하여 프랑스에서 금서가 되기도 했다. 다음으로 네그리튀드 운동의 큰 두 가지 경향을 이해하기 위해서는 생고르와 세제르의 관점을 비교해 볼 수 있다. 생고르는 아프리카 문화의 본질이 지니는 위대성을 찾아내고자 하는 낙관주의자로, 세제르는 그것보다는 식민지 상황에 더욱 관심을 가지고 투쟁을 주장하는 비관주의자로 간주된다. 이러한 경향은 `동화assimilation`에 대해서도 마찬가지이다 그렇다면, 네그리튀드 운동 이후인 지금, 네그리튀드는 어떤 상태에 있을까에 대해 질문해 볼 수 있는데, 인종차별주의 자나 흑인에 대한 불평등한 상황이 지금까지도 존재하므로 네그리튀드 운동은 여전히 유효하다고 할 수 있다. 결론을 대신해서 아이티의 상황을 예로 들고자 한다. 최초의 독립국으로서 네그리튀드의 성지로 여겨지고 있는 아이티는 독립 이후 독재와 가난, 그리고 최근에는 큰 지진사태로 국가적 위기상태에 있다. 아이티가 비록 궁핍하고 정치적으로도 혼란한 상태에 있지만 아직도 네그리튀드의 정신이 계승되고 있고 높은 문화적 수준을 유지하고 있으며 네그리튀의 상징이기도 한 아이 티가 현재의 위기를 극복하고 재건되기를 염원한다.
Blood Protein Polymorphisms of Native Fowls in Laos

Blood protein polymorphism of fowls in Laos was analyzed by electrophoresis. Blood samples were collected in the area of Viangchan, Louangphrabang and Pakxe. Out of 17 loci, polymorphism was detected at the following seven loci; ES-1, Amy-1, Akp-akp, Akp-2, Alb, Tf and Pas. The other ten loci; Amy-3, LDH, 6-PGD, PGM, PHI, To, MDH, Es-D, Hb-l, Hb-2 were noted to be monomorphic. The proportion of polymorphic loci $(P_{poly})$, the expected average heterozygosity per individual ($\bar{H}$), and the subdivision index $(G_{ST})$ of the native fowl in Laos was $0.412{\pm}0.123$, 0.106 and 0.026, respectively. Genetic distance between native fowls in Laos, Bangladesh, and Nepal was clustered in one group.

The phytotoxic activity of pyriftalid ([RS]-7-[4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-ylthio]-3-methyl-2-benzofuran-1[3H]-one) on barnyard grass (Echinochloa oryzoides) seedlings emerging from various depths in the soil was investigated in relation to its behavior in the soil. The growth of the barnyard grass seedlings in the soil mixed with pyriftalid was inhibited, depending on the concentration of the herbicide in the soil water but not on the amount in the total soil. A topmost pyriftalid-treated layer was formed by applying the herbicide to the soil surface under water-leakage conditions. The concentration of pyriftalid in the soil water and the amount that was adsorbed on the soil solid decreased with time, but the decrease was more marked in the pyriftalid concentration in the soil water than in the amount that was adsorbed on the soil solid. The emergence time of barnyard grass in the soil was faster in the seeds that were located in the shallower soil layer, compared to the deeper soil layer. The growth inhibition of the barnyard grass seedlings emerging from the shallower soil layer was greater than that of the barnyard grass seedlings emerging from the deeper soil layer after the soil surface application of pyriftalid. It is suggested that the emergence timing from the different soil depths is an important factor affecting the herbicidal activity of pyriftalid when it is applied to the soil surface under paddy field conditions.
Molecular evolution of multiple forms of kisspeptins and GPR54 receptors in vertebrates.

<P>Kisspeptin and its receptor GPR54 play important roles in mammalian reproduction and cancer metastasis. Because the KiSS and GPR54 genes have been identified in a limited number of vertebrate species, mainly in mammals, the evolutionary history of these genes is poorly understood. In the present study, we have cloned multiple forms of kisspeptin and GPR54 cDNAs from a variety of vertebrate species. We found that fish have two forms of kisspeptin genes, KiSS-1 and KiSS-2, whereas Xenopus possesses three forms of kisspeptin genes, KiSS-1a, KiSS-1b, and KiSS-2. The nonmammalian KiSS-1 gene was found to be the ortholog of the mammalian KiSS-1 gene, whereas the KiSS-2 gene is a novel form, encoding a C-terminally amidated dodecapeptide in the Xenopus brain. This study is the first to identify a mature form of KiSS-2 product in the brain of any vertebrate. Likewise, fish possess two receptors, GPR54-1 and GPR54-2, whereas Xenopus carry three receptors, GPR54-1a, GPR54-1b, and GPR54-2. Sequence identity and genome synteny analyses indicate that Xenopus GPR54-1a is a human GPR54 ortholog, whereas Xenopus GPR54-1b is a fish GPR54-1 ortholog. Both kisspeptins and GPR54s were abundantly expressed in the Xenopus brain, notably in the hypothalamus, suggesting that these ligand-receptor pairs have neuroendocrine and neuromodulatory roles. Synthetic KiSS-1 and KiSS-2 peptides activated GPR54s expressed in CV-1 cells with different potencies, indicating differential ligand selectivity. These data shed new light on the molecular evolution of the kisspeptin-GPR54 system in vertebrates.</P>
