Induction of allergic contact dermatitis by astigmatid mite-derived monoterpene, α-acaridial

α-Acaridial [2(E)-(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)butenedial] is a novel monoterpene secreted from the house dust mites. Because of its molecular nature of a highly reactive, small lipidic compound, we addressed whether α-acaridial might function as a haptenic allergen that induced allergic contact dermatitis. Mice sensitized with α-acaridial were challenged by the same antigen on the ear skin. After 2 days, significant ear swelling with a prominent infiltration of CD4+ T lymphocytes was observed. In vitro, α-acaridial exhibited an outstanding ability to quickly interact with and chemically modify a reference protein. Virtually all cysteine residues and a sizable fraction of lysine residues were found to be selectively modified, suggesting that α-acaridial could potentially interact with any proteins. Previously, numerous mite-derived proteinaceous allergens have been associated with contact dermatitis. Our study now emphasizes that small lipidic compounds released from mites comprise a new class of mite allergens, and therefore, is of significant medical implications.

As an activity of one working group for the Good Practice program at Kumamoto University, we proposed a questionnaire survey on the degree in which students understand the uppermost points of importance in their classes in addition to the usual type of class questionnaire. Each class lists three uppermost points of importance which are essential for understanding the class content. The degree of understanding is classified into four levels: full, most, insufficient, and not at all understandings. Through the analysis of questionnaire replies, the degree of understanding for bachelor students in the Department of Engineering was discovered to be meaningfully affected by the degree of difficulty, the effectiveness of audiovisual aids, self-study time, and class attendance.

Color Features of the Waterscape Drawing and Drawer’s Mental Image of the Water

Following Miyake, Takahashi, and Mori (2016), relationship between image features of the waterscape drawing and drawer’s personality was investigated. A hundred and thirty-two university students drew a picture per an instruction ‘please draw freely a scene with water.’ They also answered the semantic differential scales asking his/her mental image of the water. Pictures were scanned into digital image, and the color feature indices (Ave-L*, Ave-C*, Ave-h, and Hue-ENT) were calculated for the full image (whole picture) and for the water image (only water-depicted area). Mental image data was subjected to a factor analysis and four factors were obtained; purity, capacity, vitality, and violence. Then the correlation analysis between the mental image of the water and the color feature indices was conducted. As the results, in male participants, positive correlation was found between vitality and Hue-ENT of both the full image and the water image. Also, capacity correlated negatively with Ave-L* of the full image, suggesting that males who have a kind of ‘maternal image’ toward the water tended to draw dark picture. In female participants, vitality correlated positively with Ave-L* of the full image, suggesting that females who think water joyful and alive tended to draw light picture, or remain white face of the paper uncolored. These results were discussed in light of possible sex difference of the mental image of the water.
Development of Omnidirectional Electric Wheelchair with Zabuton Sensor

In this paper, we propose an Omnidirectional Electric Wheelchair (OEW). The proposed OEW has four omniwheels for the omnidirectional movement. Two of the omniwheels are arranged to X-axis direction and the other two are arranged to Y-axis direction. By controlling the movement of the omniwheels, the OEW can instantaneously rotate and move in all directions. Hence that, especially in the narrow spaced indoor environment, the omnidirectional nature of the OEW has an advantage over the standard wheelchair. Furthermore, the operator’ posture is used as signal to the OEW. The operator’ posture is measured by a “abuton sensor”which uses a pressure sensor to measure the pressure distribution. The effectiveness of proposed the system is reflected by the experimental results of the prototype OEW and Zabuton sensor system.
Similarity of Intracellular Signaling Toward Apoptosis Following UVB and UVC Irradiation

UV irradiation activates various intracellular signaling pathways causing cell death in a DNA damage-dependent and an independent manner. As DNA photoproducts, major forms of DNA damage, are maximally formed by UV light at 260-nm, short wavelength UV (UVC) is more harmful than middle wavelength UV (UVB). However, the differences or similarities in responses of DNA damage-independent intracellular signaling molecules to UVB and UVC are not elucidated. We examined activation of signaling molecules towards apoptosis in normal human fibroblastic cells after irradiation with UVB or UVC at a dose generating the equal amount of DNA photoproducts. Both UVB and UVC induced transient phosphorylation of ERK and sustained phosphorylation of p38. Phosphorylation of p53 at Ser15 and at Ser392 residues were also observed, which were inhibited by a phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibitor, wortmannin. In contrast, an antioxidant N-acetyl-cysteine and a p38 inhibitor SB203580 suppressed only Ser392 phosphorylation, suggesting that UV-induced oxidative stress and p38 activation were involved in the phosphorylation of this site. The apoptic signals such as mitochondrial cytochrome C release and annexin V binding were then observed. Overall, no difference was found in chronological responses of p53, MAPK, and apoptosis between UVB-irradiated and UVC-irradiated cells. These results suggested that DNA damage-independent intracellular signaling molecules similarly responded to UVB and UVC when the equal level of DNA photoproducts were generated.
