      • Image of Purple and Orange by Pleasantness Seekers and Comfortableness Seekers

        Shin’ya Takahashi,Takashi Hanari,Riko Miyake 한국색채학회 2017 AIC 2017 Jeju Vol.2017 No.10

Following Takahashi and Hanari (2015) and Takahashi, Hanari, and Miyake (2016), relationship between individual’s color preference and his/her personality concerning pleasantness and comfortableness was examined. A hundred and seventy-nine university students answered the questionnaire that asked his/her degree of preference of twelve colors, tendency of seeking pleasantness and comfortableness, and the image of purple and orange colors. The results showed that pleasantness seeking had a positive correlation with restful image for purple, and comfortableness seeking had a positive correlation with restful image for orange. These correlations suggested mental affinity between pleasantness and purple color, and between comfortableness and orange color. However, in the present study, color preference data did not show the same tendency as previous studies; purple preference had no relationship with pleasantness seeking, and orange preference had no relationship with comfortableness seeking. Though the underlying psychological process that links our good feelings and certain colors has become clearer by the present findings, further research is needed with some procedural improvements.

      • Personality Characteristics Relating to Individual Consistency of Color Preference

        Shinji Nakamura,Shin’ya Takahashi 한국색채학회 2017 AIC 2017 Jeju Vol.2017 No.10

Relationship between participants’ personality characteristics and their intrapersonal consistency (or stability) of expressed color preference was investigated. Color preference was measured by making the participants rank 12 fundamental colors, and tested twice with four weeks interval. Consistency of color preference was individually obtained by calculating rank correlation between the two tests. General personality traits and public and private self-consciousness were also measured in the first test, using Ten Item Personality Inventory and Self-Consciousness Scale. Results showed that consistency of individual color preference was quite high, and suggested that color preference is somewhat robust against a certain range of time interval. The results showed significant correlations between the stability of color preference and the scores of the self-consciousness questionnaire, though there was an intersexual difference. In the male participants, a positive correlation was confirmed with the public self-consciousness, whereas a negative correlation was obtained with the private self-consciousness in the female participants. The results of the current survey suggested that high consciousness against a self which was monitored by other persons, not an inner self monitored by oneself, made the participants’ expressed color preference more stable and consistent.

      • Color Features of the Waterscape Drawing and Drawer’s Mental Image of the Water

        Riko Miyake,Shin’ya Takahashi,Toshio Mori 한국색채학회 2017 AIC 2017 Jeju Vol.2017 No.10

Following Miyake, Takahashi, and Mori (2016), relationship between image features of the waterscape drawing and drawer’s personality was investigated. A hundred and thirty-two university students drew a picture per an instruction ‘please draw freely a scene with water.’ They also answered the semantic differential scales asking his/her mental image of the water. Pictures were scanned into digital image, and the color feature indices (Ave-L*, Ave-C*, Ave-h, and Hue-ENT) were calculated for the full image (whole picture) and for the water image (only water-depicted area). Mental image data was subjected to a factor analysis and four factors were obtained; purity, capacity, vitality, and violence. Then the correlation analysis between the mental image of the water and the color feature indices was conducted. As the results, in male participants, positive correlation was found between vitality and Hue-ENT of both the full image and the water image. Also, capacity correlated negatively with Ave-L* of the full image, suggesting that males who have a kind of ‘maternal image’ toward the water tended to draw dark picture. In female participants, vitality correlated positively with Ave-L* of the full image, suggesting that females who think water joyful and alive tended to draw light picture, or remain white face of the paper uncolored. These results were discussed in light of possible sex difference of the mental image of the water.

The Effects of a Triggering Instruction on Communication Strategy Transference

        Noriko Aotani,Shin’ya Takahashi 범태평양 응용언어학회 2022 범태평양응용언어학회지 Vol.26 No.2

Research on communication strategies (CSs) has been drawing much attention in the area of psycholinguistics and applied linguistics. This study examined if triggering instruction can accelerate the cognitive aspects of CSs transference from L1 to L2. In the first part of the experiment, all participants, twenty-one Japanese university students, looked at pictures and were asked to say anything that came to their mind in English. In the second part, half of them (an experimental group) were instructed to begin the task by saying likes and dislikes of the picture. The other half (a control group) did not receive such an instruction. Participants also answered a questionnaire asking about self-evaluation of the task performance in order to examine their affective and cognitive state. Their utterances were classified as either objective descriptions of what was shown in the picture or subjective expressions of what they imagined or felt. The results of the experimental group clearly demonstrated the effect of instructional intervention; subjective expression increased and objective description decreased, and also their anxiety decreased from the first part of the experiment to the second. These findings suggest that more attention should be paid to the cognitive aspects of CSs such as change of viewpoint from objective to subjective, which we may call ‘self-expression switching,’ and its transference from L1.

      • Diagnosis of Delay Faults in the Presence of Clock Delays Considering Hazards

        Yoshinobu Higami,Senling Wang,Hiroshi Takahashi,Shin-ya Kobayashi,Kewal K. Saluja 대한전자공학회 2015 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2015 No.6

Presence of hazards can often lead to poor diagnosis. In this paper we propose a diagnosis method for gate delay faults in the presence of clock delays and hazards. Candidate faults are deduced using a fault dictionary which is created by the fault simulation considering hazard signals. Our diagnosis method can deduce candidate faults successfully even when a fault is activated by a hazard signal or when hazard signals are propagated to outputs, though conventional methods without considering hazards often fail to do so.
