Localization and Size Estimation for Breaks in Nuclear Power Plants

        Ting-Han Lin,Ching Chen,Shun-Chi Wu,Te-Chuan Wang,Yuh-Ming Ferng 한국원자력학회 2022 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.54 No.1

Several algorithms for nuclear power plant (NPP) break event detection, isolation, localization, and size estimation are proposed. A break event can be promptly detected and isolated after its occurrence by simultaneously monitoring changes in the sensing readings and by employing an interquartile range-based isolation scheme. By considering the multi-sensor data block of a break to be rank-one, it can be located as the position whose lead field vector is most orthogonal to the noise subspace of that data block using the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm. Owing to the flexibility of deep neural networks in selecting the best regression model for the available data, we can estimate the break size using multiple-sensor recordings of the break regardless of the sensor types. The efficacy of the proposed algorithms was evaluated using the data generated by Maanshan NPP simulator. The experimental results demonstrated that the MUSIC method could distinguish two near breaks. However, if the two breaks were close and of small sizes, the MUSIC method might wrongly locate them. The break sizes estimated by the proposed deep learning model were close to their actual values, but relative errors of more than 8% were seen while estimating small breaks’ sizes.

      • A unique cytoplasmic localization of retinoic acid receptor-gamma and its regulations.

        Han, Young-Hoon,Zhou, Hu,Kim, Jin-Hee,Yan, Ting-dong,Lee, Kee-Ho,Wu, Hua,Lin, Feng,Lu, Na,Liu, Jie,Zeng, Jin-zhang,Zhang, Xiao-kun American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Bi 2009 The Journal of biological chemistry Vol.284 No.27

Recent evidence suggests that extranuclear action of retinoid receptors is involved in mediating the pleiotropic effects of retinoids. However, whether they reside in the cytoplasm remains elusive. Here, we showed that retinoic acid receptor-gamma (RARgamma) was cytoplasmic in confluent cells, or when cells were released from serum depletion or treated with growth factors. In studying the regulation of RARgamma subcellular localization, we observed that ectopically overexpressed RARgamma was mainly cytoplasmic irrespective of serum concentration and cell density. The cytoplasmic retention of RARgamma was inhibited by ligand retinoic acid (RA). In addition, coexpression of retinoid X receptor-alpha (RXRalpha) resulted in nuclear localization of RARgamma through their heterodimerization. Mutagenesis studies revealed that a C-terminal fragment of RXRalpha potently prevents RA-induced RARgamma nuclear localization and transcriptional function. Furthermore, our results showed that the cytoplasmic retention of RARgamma was due to the presence of its unique N-terminal A/B domain, which was subject to regulation by p38 MAPK-mediated phosphorylation. Deletion or mutation of the N-terminal A/B domain largely impaired its cytoplasmic localization. Together, our data demonstrate that the subcellular localization of RARgamma is regulated by complex interactions among ligand binding, receptor phosphorylation, and receptor dimerizations.

Probiotic BSH Activity and Anti-Obesity Potential of Lactobacillus plantarum Strain TCI378 Isolated from Korean Kimchi

        Chu-Han Huang,Cheng-Yu Ho,Ciao-Ting Chen,Hsin-Fen Hsu,Yung-Hsiang Lin 한국식품영양과학회 2019 Preventive Nutrition and Food Science Vol.24 No.4

Lactobacillus (Lab.) is a human probiotic beneficial for the prevention and improvement of disease, yet properties of different Lab. strains are diverse. To obtain a Lab. strain that possesses greater potential against gastrointestinal dysfunction, we isolated Lactobacillus plantarum TCI378 (TCI378) from naturally fermented Korean kimchi. TCI378 has shown potential as probiotic since it can survive at pH 3.0 and in the presence of 0.3% bile acid. The bile salt hydrolase activity of TCI378 was shown by formation of opaque granular white colonies on solid de Man Rogosa Sharpe (MRS) medium supplemented with taurodeoxycholic acid, and its cholesterol-lowering ability in MRS medium supplemented with cholesterol. The metabolites of TCI378 from liquid culture in MRS medium prevented emulsification of bile salts. Moreover, both the metabolites of TCI378 and the dead bacteria reduced oil droplet accumulation in 3T3-L1, as detected by Oil red O staining. The expressions of adipocyte-specific genes perilipin 1 and glucose transporter type 4 were suppressed by the metabolites of TCI378, indicating TCI378 may have anti-obesity effects in adipocytes. These in vitro data show the potential of the prophylactic applications of TCI378 and its metabolites for reducing fat and lowering cholesterol.

Enhancing Tensile Properties of Wire-Arc Additively Manufactured Ti-6Al-4 V Deposits Via Cryogenic Vaporised Ar Shielding/Cooling

        Peng Han,Jia Lin,Wen Wang,Zhihao Liu,Yating Xiang,Ting Zhang,Qiang Liu,Xiaohu Guan,Ke Qiao,Yingchun Xie,Kuaishe Wang 대한금속ᆞ재료학회 2023 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.29 No.2

The high-entropy alloy particles reinforced 6061Al composite was prepared by cold spray (CS) and then modified by frictionstir processing (FSP). The microstructure evolutions, corrosion, and wear behaviors of the composites were investigated. Results showed that numerous micro-pores and cracks were distributed in the Al matrix due to adiabatic shear instability andinsufficient deformation of the deposited particles for CSed samples. The average size of uniformly distributed HEA particleswas ~ 24 μm, and the geometric necessary dislocation (GND) density reached 17.1 × 1015m−2 due to large plastic deformationduring CS. Comparatively, the micro-pores and cracks were eliminated, and many fragmented HEA particles dispersed inthe Al matrix with an average size of ~ 4 μm for FSPed sample. Note that the GND density reduced to 9.8 × 1015m−2 due todynamic recrystallization during FSP. The formation rate of the oxide film was gradually greater than that of the dissolutionrate with the samples immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution from 12 to 36 h, and the main corrosion mechanism was particledissolution around micro-pores and pitting for CSed and FSPed samples, respectively. In the polarization process, the FSPedsamples exhibited low corrosion tendency and high corrosion rate due to the dense and uniform microstructure, low GNDdensity, and dispersed HEA particles. The FSPed samples had better wear resistance than the CSed samples at 25 °C and200 °C. The dominant wear mechanisms of CSed and FSPed samples were abrasion at 25 °C, while the wear mechanismsof these samples were adhesion accompanied by abrasion at 200 °C.

Rock wool wastes as a supplementary cementitious material replacement in cement-based composites

        Wei-Ting Lin,An Cheng,Ran Huang,Yuan-Chieh Wu,Ta-Yuan Han 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2013 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.11 No.2

The use of rock wool waste, an industrial by-product, in cement-based composites has positive effects on the environment because it reduces the problems associated rock wool disposal. The experiments in this study tested cement-based composites using various rock wool waste contents (10, 20, 30 and 40% by weight of cement) as a partial replacement for Portland cement in mortars. The pozzolanic strength activity test, flow test, compressive strength test, dry shrinkage test, absorption test, initial surface absorption test and scanning electron microscope observations were conducted to evaluate the properties of cement-based composites. Test results demonstrate that the pozzolanic strength activity index for rock wool waste specimens is 103% after 91 days. The inclusion of rock wool waste in cement-based composites decreases its dry shrinkage and initial surface absorption, and increases its compressive strength. These improved properties are the result of the dense structure achieved by the filling effect and pozzolanic reactions of the rock wool waste. The addition of 30% and 10% rock wool wastes to cement is the optimal amount based on the results of compressive strength and initial surface absorption for a w/cm of 0.35 and 0.55, respectively. Therefore, it is feasible to utilize rock wool waste as a partial replacement of cement in cement-based composites.

Chinese Translation and Validation of the Child and Adolescent Sleep Checklist for Parents

        Yang Ya-Ting,Chang Han-Yun,Hsu Chung-Yao,Lin Cheng-Yu,Zeitzer Jamie M. 대한수면학회 2020 sleep medicine research Vol.11 No.2

Background and ObjectiveaaThe Child and Adolescent Sleep Checklist (CASC) for parents was originally developed and published in Japanese and has served as a valid and effective tool for the assessment of a parent’s perspective of their adolescent child’s sleep behaviors. To allow for comparisons of such perspectives among parents of different cultures, and with different linguistic backgrounds, reliable and valid measurement tools are necessary. The purpose of this study was to translate and validate a Chinese language version of this questionnaire. MethodsaaInternal consistency, factor structure, and criterion validity data were tested using 497 parent/adolescent dyads in Taiwan. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and internal consistency reliability were examined in a subset of the cohort (n = 241), while criterion validity and conduct confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was examined in a second subset of the cohort (n = 256). Preliminary criterion validity was established through a comparison with a measure of chronotype, Morningness- Eveningness Scale for Children. ResultsaaEFA resulted in four factors, consistent with the original version, with the four factors accounting for 60% of the total variance. The results of CFA presented good fit to the data. The questionnaire demonstrated also acceptable to good internal consistency (α = 0.84–0.89). Preliminary criterion validity was evident as the total score and each of the subscale scores on the questionnaire were significantly higher (worse sleep-related behavior) in evening-types. ConclusionsaaThe Chinese language version of the CASC for parents appears to be a psychometrically sound measure to evaluate sleep behaviors in Chinese-speaking adolescents.

      • HE4 as a Serum Biomarker for ROMA Prediction and Prognosis of Epithelial Ovarian Cancer

        Chen, Wen-Ting,Gao, Xiang,Han, Xiao-Dian,Zheng, Hui,Guo, Lin,Lu, Ren-Quan Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.1

Background and Purpose: Human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) has been suggested to be a novel biomarker of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). The present study aimed to evaluate and compare HE4 with the commonly used marker, carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125), in prediction and therapy-monitoring of EOC. Patients and Methods: Serum HE4 concentrations from 123 ovarian cancer patients and 174 controls were measured by Roche electrochemiluminescent immunoassay (ECLIA). Risk of ovarian malignancy algorithm (ROMA) values were calculated and assessed. In addition, the prospects of HE4 detection for therapy-monitoring were evaluated in EOC patients. Results: The ROMA score could classify patients into high- and low-risk groups with malignancy. Indeed, lower serum HE4 was significantly associated with successful surgical therapy. Specifically, 38 patients with EOC exhibited a greater decline of HE4 compared with CA125. In contrast, elevation of HE4 better predicted recurrence (of 46, 11 patients developed recurrence, and with it increased HE4 serum concentrations) and a poor prognosis than CA125. Conclusions: This study suggests that serum HE4 levels are closely associated with outcome of surgical therapy and disease prognosis in Chinese EOC patients.
