<P>Targeted disruption of STAT3 function has proven to be a useful cancer therapeutic approach by inducing apoptotic cell death. Cucurbitacin is currently under development as a small molecule of STAT3 inhibitor to trigger cell death in many cancers. Here, we systematically studied the molecular mechanisms underlying cucurbitacin-induced cell death, in particular the involvement of autophagy. Treatment with cucurbitacin resulted in non-apoptotic cell death in a caspase-independent manner. Notably, cucurbitacin enhanced excessive conversion of lipidated LC3 (LC3-II) and accumulation of autophagosomes in many cell types. Such autophagy and cell death induced by cucurbitacin were independent of its ability to inhibit STAT3 function, but mainly mediated by enhanced production of mitochondrial-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS), and subsequently activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and c-jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK). Interestingly, both the autophagy inhibitor wortmannin and knockdown of Atg5 or Beclin 1 failed to rescue the cells from cucurbitacin-induced cell death, as suppression of autophagy induced the mode of cell death to shift from autophagic cell death to caspase-dependent apoptosis. Thus the present study provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying cucurbitacin-mediated cell death and supports cucurbitacin as a potential anti-cancer drug through modulating the balance between autophagic and apoptotic modes of cell death.</P>
China's Territorial Policies the Maritime Dimension

This paper examines the Chinese maritmie territorial policies, and focusing mainly on the South China Sea and Taiwan, for the sake of the significance of the two issues in Chinese-foreign policy and regional stability, as well as the interconnectedness of them. I will firstly discuss the two theoretical perspectives in the Chinese territorial policies, i.e. realist and constructivist. Secondly, I am to analyze the Taiwan issue as a crucial territorial concern for China and factors contributing to that particular concern. Thirdly, I am going to discuss the importance of the South China Sea issue in Chinese territorial policies. Fourthly, I argue that the interconnectedness lie in two areas, i.e. the identical claims of Taiwan and the PRC over South China Sea island and the Southeast Asian factor in the cross-Strait relations. In conclusion, Iargue the utmost importance for China to have amicable relations with its East Asian neighbors and the increasing impossibility of China taking agrresive measures towards its neighbors on territorial issues.
Secret Sharing-Based Chaotic Image Encryption

This paper presents an image encryption scheme for secure digital images based on secret sharing and coupled map lattices. In this scheme, the secret image is encrypted before the sharing phase based on key sequences generated by chaotic map lattices. Experimental results and analysis show that the proposed scheme has better security and can be easily protects both confidentiality and loss-tolerance simultaneously in shadow images.
An integrated biomass-derived syngas/dimethyl ether process

Cu-Zn-Al methanol catalyst combined with HZSM-5 was used for dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis froma biomass-derived syngas containing nitrogen. The syngas was produced by air-steam gasification of pine sawdust ina bubbling fluidized bed biomass gasifier with a dry reforming reaction over ultra-stable NiO-MgO catalyst packedin a downstream reactor for stoichiometric factor (H2, CO, CO2) adjustment. It constantly gave syngas with H2/CO ratioof 1.5 and containing trace CH4 and CO2 during a period of 150 h. The obtained N2-containing biomass-derived syngas% CO per-pass conversion and 66.7% DME selectivity could be achievedunder the condition of 533 K, 4 MPa and 1,000-4,000 h1. The maximized DME yield, 244 g DME/Kgbiomass (dry basis),was achieved under a gasification temperature of 1,073 K, ER (Equivalence Ratio) of 0.24, S/B (Steam to BiomassRatio) of 0.72 and reforming temperature of 1,023 K with the addition of 0.54 Nm3 biogas/Kgbiomass (dry basis).

Healthy adults and patients with history of breathing disorders and stroke were enrolled in this clinical study and underwent simultaneous test by polysomnography (PSG). The present study analyzed fluctuation in vital signs and movement activity extracted from the multichannel ballistocardiographic signals based on piezo sensor distribution under bed mattress. We assessed the validity using contact less technology to screening obstructive sleep apnea and stroke. We found an agreement of apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) with the number of hypopneas estimated by our method. Also we found abnormal changes in body pressure distribution during sleep in patient having history of stroke. Mean area of distribution for stroke was 3.44±0.82 having significant lower values than ones without stroke who had value of 9.19±2.35.
Steel scale-CaO composite catalyst for coke combustion and in-situ NO and SO2 removal

The performance of the steel scale (SS)-CaO composite on the combustion of coke nuts and in-situ reductionof SO2 and NO emission was investigated. Combustion experiments show that SS-CaO compositeaccelerates coke combustion and reduces SO2 and NO emissions concurrently. X-ray diffraction (XRD),scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron spin resonance (ESR) were used to investigate thecatalysis mechanism. Results show that SS and CaO have synergistic effect in in-situ denitration. Theincrease of SS and CaO fraction in the composites improve the denitration and sulfur fixation performance,respectively. The denitration activity is mainly attributed to the Fe2O3 in SS and Ca2Fe2O5 formedduring combustion. The desulfurization is due to the sulfur fixation with CaO. The increasing fraction ofCaO in the composites leads to the agglomeration of ash particles. 2%CaO is confirmed as the optimumaddition for catalytic combustion and emission reduction. This work sheds light on the cheap and effectivecatalysts that are potentially useful for iron ore sintering.
Cabriole-legged Furniture in the Style of Song and Yuan Dynasties

Song and Yuan dynasties is a booming period of Chinese classical furniture, and the cabriole legs became a fashion style of the furniture of that time. In this article, we use the triple proof method of images, real objects and literature to give a comprehensive analysis of the basic forms, structures and ornament features of the cabriole-Iegged furniture in the Song and Yuan dynasties, and, by taking full advantage of the rich information offered by the image data and by analyzing the relationship between furniture and human behavior, and between furniture and living space, we try our best to restore the usage mode of the furniture.
Research on Sound Source Localization for Device Fault Diagnosis

A sound source localization method is presented herein around the utilization with the sound signal for device fault diagnosis. Firstly, Butterworth wavelet and its filter banks were designed aimed at the background noise separation in the industrial environment, it is proved that the Butterworth wavelet filter can extract the weak fault features in source signals without frequency aliasing phenomenon. Then the algorithms of sound source localization was studied in depth, the generalized cross-correlation(GCC) based time delay estimation(TDE) was presented. Finally the coordinates of sound source location was obtained in the quaternion microphone array model. The experiment results show that in the industrial environment, the error value of positioning accuracy is less than 4cm within an appropriate distance, it can meet the needs of practical application, meanwhile the reliability and the real-time performance is satisfactory.
