Atmospheric aerosol deposition caused by Asian dust (KOSA) events provide nutrients, trace metals, and organic compounds over the Pacific Ocean that enhance ocean productivity and carbon sequestration and, thus, influence the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and climate. Using dust particles obtained from the snow layers on Mt. Tateyama and the surface sand of Loess Plateau in incubation experiments with natural seawater samples on a shipboard,we demonstrate that dust-particle additions enhanced the bacterial growth on the first day of incubation. Gram-positive bacterial group and alpha-proteobacteria were specifically detected form seawater samples including the mineral particles. Although the remarkable dynamics of trace elements and nutrients depend on dust-particle additions, it is possible that organic compounds present in the mineral particles or transported microbial cells could also contribute to an increase in the quantities of bacteria. The chlorophyll concentrations at fractions of every size indicated a similar pattern of change between the seawater samples with and without the dust-particle additions. In contrast, the chlorophyll measurement using submersible fluorometer revealed that the dynamics of phytoplankton composition were influenced by the dust-particles treatments. We conclude that the phytoplankton that uses the bacterial products would increase their biomass. We show that KOSA deposition can potentially alter the structures of bacterial communities and indirectly influence the patterns of marine primary production in the Pacific Ocean.

Fucoidan is a uniquely-structured sulfated fucose-rich polysaccharide derived from brown algae. Recently, the abalone glycosidase-digested fucoidan extract (fucoidan extract) derived from seaweed Cladosiphon novae-caledoniae Kylin (Mozuku) draws much attention because of its clinical anti-cancer effect in Japan. Here, we report the cancer cells-specific apoptosis inducing effects of the fucoidan extract. The fucoidan extract suppressed the growth of various anchorage-dependent and -independent cancer cells. The fucoidan extract contained low molecular weight components, which induced apoptosis of human leukemic HL 60 cells but not of human lymphocytes. It was shown that the fucoidan extract lead caspase 3/7 activation and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential in HL 60 cells. Another function of the fucoidan extract was also observed. It has been known that sugar chain expression on the surface of cancer cell membrane changes dependent on their malignancy. The analysis on sugar chain expression profiling using FITC-labeled lectins revealed that the expression of concanavalin A (Con A) binding sugar chain was enhanced by the treatment of human lung adenocarcinoma A549, human uterine carcinoma HeLa and human fibrosarcoma HT1080 cells with the fucoidan extract. Con A-induced apoptosis of cancer cells was stimulated in a dose-and time-dependent manner by the treatment with the fucoidan extract but not of human normal fibroblast TIG-1 cells.
Classification of the flop technique with a bent free leg
Teruya Watanabe 한국코칭능력개발원 2008 Coach Vol.24 No.2
There are two types of flop technique in the high jump: flop with a bent free leg and flop with a more or less extended free leg (Tancic, 1978). Most Asian jumpers use the former, and this type of flop is the theme of this study. There are many variations of the flop with a bent free leg, even among world-class jumpers (Killing, 1989). Therefore, many researchers suggest that there isn't one universal technique for the high jump; there are only individual styles that are optimal for each jumper (Viitasalo et al., 1982; Tidow, 1994; Killing, 1995). However, coaches cannot lead technical training effectively without an ideal model (Kaneko, 2007). Thus, the purpose of this study was to propose ideal models for technical training of the high jump by classifying the flop with a bent free leg into different categories of technique. World-class high jumpers using the flop with a bent free leg were chosen as the subjects of this study. The technical form of subjects was classified based on qualitative analysis of their movement structure. Biomechanical parameters of form and characteristics of subjects were then compared under each type of technique. The results were as follows: ㆍFlop with a bent free leg could be classified into three types of technique. ㆍEach type had an original movement structure. ㆍRelationships existed between types of technique and characteristics of athletes. These three types of the flop can be proposed as ideal models for technical training. With structured instructional management of these three types of flop, it is probable that coaches can lead technical training of individual athletes effectively. Moreover, since differences in ideal models affect the types of fitness training that must be done (Tancic, 1985), it is concluded that classification of technique is essential for successful training of the high jump.

In this study, we compare the quality of the mango cv. Irwin cultivated in Jeju and Okinawa by evaluating the total soluble solids (TSS) and antioxidant activity (AA) from ethanol extracts of the fruit. TSS and AA were higher in fruit cultivated at the Research Institute of Climate Change and Agriculture in Jeju (RICA) and Okinawa farm, where the low tree height cultivation method is used, than in fruit cultivated on farm in Jeju. Also, the mangiferin content of the Okinawa farm was higher than those produced on the RICA and Jeju farm house. These results suggest that the lowering tree height cultivation method improves the quality of the mango cv. Irwin.
