        ECBFMBP: Design of an Ensemble deep learning Classifier with Bio-inspired Feature Selection for high-efficiency Multidomain Bug Prediction

        Prediction of software bugs from process logs, temporal access logs, behavior analysis, etc. requires estimation of a wide variety of high-density feature sets. Extracted feature sets must be able to classify these logs into different bug categories with high accuracy, and low complexity. To perform these tasks, a wide variety of Machine Learning Models (MLMs) are proposed by researchers, and each of them varies in terms of their performance-level nuances, functional advantages, contextual limitations, and application-specific future scopes. Upon analyzing these characteristics, it was observed that existing models are highly context-specific, and cannot be applied to multidomain bug analysis datasets. Moreover, existing models do not incorporate a dynamic feature selection method, which limits their accuracy performance under multiple bug classification applications. To overcome these issues, this paper proposes design of a novel Ensemble deep learning Classifier with Feature Selection for high-efficiency Multidomain Bug Prediction under different use cases. The proposed model improves bug representation performance by combining multiple feature extraction methods, including GWO-based novel feature selection techniques. The ensemble classification model, which combines Deep Random Forest, k Nearest Neighbor, Logistic Regression, Multilayer Perceptron, Support Vector Machine, and 1D Convolutional Neural Network classifiers, achieves higher accuracy, precision, recall, and low delay compared to existing models. The model also shows faster classification speeds than existing models and can be deployed for various real-time applications. This accuracy performance was compared with various state-of-the-art models, and it was observed that the proposed model showcases 4.5% higher accuracy, 3.2% better precision, 3.9% higher recall, and 5.5% faster classification performance, which was possible due to integration of intelligent feature selection process with high efficiency classification models under multidomain scenarios.

        The Impact of IFRS on Financial Reporting Quality: Full vs Partial Adoption

        As the adoption of IFRS is being considered by more countries, either by default or as a modification to their existing standards, understanding the impact of IFRS on countries with a different approach to the standards’ adoption is becoming increasingly imperative. While extant studies have primarily focused on the effect of the switch from local standards to IFRS over the years, examining the different approaches to IFRS adoption (the approach to fully or partially adopt IFRS) and its impacts on the quality of financial reporting is insufficient. This study investigates the relative effect of IFRS adoption and convergence on financial reporting quality. We use a sample of 58,452 (8,918 unique firms) observations collected between 2000 and 2021 from 8 countries and employ a difference-in-differences test. Using the Ordinary Least square (OLS) regression analysis method, the empirical results suggest that adoption and convergence lead to increased financial reporting quality (FRQ) post-adoption and convergence. However, difference-in-differences tests show that adoption leads to a significant increase in FRQ beyond convergence. These results should be interesting to regulators and those who set standards as they think about how to get more countries to align their local GAAP with IFRS. This study clarifies claims of similarities between full adoption and partial adoption of IFRS.

        Organophotocatalytic oxidation of alcohols to carboxylic acids

        A sustainable photochemical protocol for the oxidation of alcohols to ketonesand carboxylic acids has been developed by using 2,4,6-triphenylpyrylium tetrafluoroborate(TPPT) as organophotocatalyst and molecular oxygen as oxidantunder visible light irradiation. The key reactive oxygen species, superoxide(O2•) for the first oxidation step from alcohol to aldehyde and singlet oxygen(1O2) for the second oxidation step from aldehyde to carboxylic acid, were generatedsuccessfully by electron transfer and energy transfer pathways, respectively. A range of primary and secondary alcohols were converted to thecorresponding carboxylic acids or ketones, and the optimized reaction conditionswere applied to the synthesis of benzocoumarin.

        Family Control Firms and Real Earnings Management: The Case of Korean Chaebols

        We examine the relation between family control firms and real earnings management. Specifically, we see how much family control firms engage in real earnings management compared to non-family control firms. With a sample of 1290 Korean listed family control firms in KOSPI and KOSDAQ market during 2005-2015, we conduct regression analysis to compare real earnings management between family control firms and non-family control firms. We find that family control firms, on average, do not engage in income-increasing real earnings management, compared to a sample of 1283 non-family control firms. Instead, our empirical results show that family control firms, on average, conduct income-decreasing real earnings management compared to non-family control firms, consistent with the results of previous studies that show income-decreasing earnings management with accruals in Korea. we also find in further analysis that family control firms meet or beat earnings benchmarks(zero earnings and last year earnings) less than non-family control firms. We interpret these results as family control firms place more importance on long-term persistence rather than short-term performance. We contribute to accounting literature by adding evidence on the behavior of real earnings management of Chaebol firms in Korea.

        Turnout Drop in Times of Crisis? An enigma of the electoral turnout change in the 2022 parliamentary election in Sweden

        The Swedish elections in 2022 made international headlines first because of the breakthrough of the Swedish Democrat. This far-right populist party is now the second largest party, but also because of the 3 per cent drop in the 2022 elections compared to the previous parliamentary election of 2018. Voter turnout is a strong indicator of functional democracy and essential for the legitimacy of the democratic system. Therefore, from a normative perspective, a small drop should be the cause of concern. The article, therefore, aims to explain this surprising drop. By relying on descriptive and exploratory statistics, our preliminary analysis confirms in times of crises, turnout became lower because of the negative impact of uncertainty and degenerated life conditions.

        Diastereoselective Reductive Cyclization of Allene-Tethered Ketoamines via Copper-Catalyzed Cascade Carboboronation and Protodeborylation

        A copper-catalyzed cascade process has been developed for the synthesis of 3-hydroxypyrrolidine derivatives in a highly diastereoselective manner. The reaction proceeded via borylative allyl copper intermediate formation from allenes; the intermediate underwent intramolecular diastereoselective cyclization followed by cascade copper-catalyzed protodeborylation, to give 3-hydroxypyrrolidines. This method could be extended to the synthesis of six-membered piperidine analogs. A series of control experiments were carried out to confirm the Cu-catalyzed facile protodeborylation of borylated homoallylic alcohols at room temperature.

      • Polymeric nanoparticles as dual-imaging probes for cancer management

        This article reports the development of biodegradable photoluminescent polymer (BPLP)-based nanoparticles (NPs) incorporating either magnetic nanoparticles (BPLP-MNPs) or gadopentate dimeglumine (BPLP-Gd NPs), for cancer diagnosis and treatment. The aim of the study is to compare these nanoparticles in terms of their surface properties, fluorescence intensities, MR imaging capabilities, and in vitro characteristics to choose the most promising dual-imaging nanoprobe. Results indicate that BPLP-MNPs and BPLP-Gd NPs had a size of $195{\pm}43nm$ and $161{\pm}55nm$, respectively and showed good stability in DI water and 10% serum for 5 days. BPLP-Gd NPs showed similar fluorescence as the original BPLP materials under UV light, whereas BPLP-MNPs showed comparatively less fluorescence. VSM and MRI confirmed that the NPs retained their magnetic properties following encapsulation within BPLP. Further, in vitro studies using HPV-7 immortalized prostate epithelial cells and human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) showed > 70% cell viability up to $100{\mu}g/ml$ NP concentration. Dose-dependent uptake of both types of NPs by PC3 and LNCaP prostate cancer cells was also observed. Thus, our results indicate that BPLP-Gd NPs would be more appropriate for use as a dual-imaging probe as the contrast agent does not mask the fluorescence of the polymer. Future studies would involve in vivo imaging following administration of BPLP-Gd NPs for biomedical applications including cancer detection.

        Discovery Elbow System arthroplasty polyethylene bearing exchange: outcomes and experience

        Background: The Discovery Elbow System (DES) utilizes a polyethylene bearing within the ulnar component. An exchange bearing requires preoperative freezing and implantation within 2 minutes of freezer removal to allow insertion. We report our outcomes and experience using this technique. Methods: This was an analysis of a two-surgeon consecutive series of DES bearing exchange. Inclusion criteria included patients in which exchange was attempted with a minimum 1-year follow-up. Clinical and radiographic review was performed 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 10 years postoperative. Outcome measures included range of movement, Oxford Elbow Score (OES), Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS), complications and requirement for revision surgery. Results: Eleven DESs in 10 patients were included. Indications were bearing wear encountered during humeral component revision (n=5); bearing failure (n=4); and infection treated with debridement, antibiotics and implant retention (DAIR; n=2). Bearing exchange was conducted on the first attempt in 10 cases. One case required a second attempt. One patient developed infection postoperatively managed with two-stage revision. Mean follow-up of the bearing exchange DES was 3 years. No further surgery was required, with no infection recurrence in DAIR cases. Mean elbow flexion-extension and pronosupination arcs were 107° (±22°) and 140° (±26°). Mean OES was 36/48 (±12) and MEPS was 83/100 (±19). Conclusions: Our results support the use of DES bearing exchange in cases of bearing wear with well-fixed stems or acute infection. This series provides surgeons managing DES arthroplasty with management principles, successful and reproducible surgical techniques and expected clinical outcomes in performing DES polyethylene bearing exchange.
