Specific-Heat Study on the Noncentrosymmetric Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CePt3Si

Specific-heat measurements were performed on a high-quality single crystal of CePt3Si without inversion symmetry in the tetragonal crystal structure. We observed distinct peaks in the specific-heat C at the superconducting transition temperature Tc =0.46 K and the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN =2.25 K, compared to the previous data, indicating an improvement of the sample quality. The temperature dependence of the electronic specific-heat coefficient Ce=T below about 0.3 K is well described y the equation of Ce/T = γs + βsT with γs =34.1 mJ/K2·mol and βs =1290 mJ/K3·mol, evidencing the existence of line nodes in the superconducting energy gap. Furthermore, the electronic specific-heat coefficient γs in the superconducting state indicates a nonlinear magnetic eld dependence s(H) / pH, which also supports the presence of line nodes. SEARCH FOR DEBRIS DISKS BY AKARI AND IRSF

Debris disks are important observational clues to understanding on-goingplanetary system formation. They are usually identified by significantmid-infrared excess on top of the photospheric emission of a central star onthe basis of prediction from \sl J\rm-, \sl H\rm-, and \sl Ks\rm-band fluxes and the stellar model spectra. For bright stars, 2MASS near-infrared fluxes suffer large uncertainties due to thenear-infrared camera saturation. Therefore we have performed follow-up observations with the IRSF 1.4 mnear-infrared telescope located in South Africa to obtain accurate \sl J\rm-, \sl H\rm-, and \sl Ks\rm-bandfluxes of the central stars. Among 754 main-sequence stars which are detected in theAKARI 18 $\mu$m band, we have performed photometry for 325 stars with IRSF. As a result, we have successfully improved the flux accuracy of the centralstars from 9.2 \% to 0.5 \% on average. Using this dataset, we have detected 18$\mu$m excess emission from 57 stars in our samples with a 3$\sigma$ level. We find that some of them have high ratios of the excess to the photospheric emission even around very old stars,which cannot be explained by the current planet-formation theories.

Objectives: This postmarketing, observational study evaluated the safety and effectiveness of monthly intravenous (IV) ibandronate in Japanese patients with osteoporosis. Methods: Eligible patients received monthly IV ibandronate 1mg for 12 months. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were evaluated. Changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover markers (BTMs) were assessed using matched t-test analysis. Cumulative fracture rates were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier methodology. Results: In total, 1062 patients were enrolled, of whom 1025 (n= 887 women, n= 138 men) were treated. Mean patient age was 77 years. Seventy-five ADRs were reported in 54 patients (5.26%). Four patients (0.39%) experienced serious ADRs, including one case of osteonecrosis of the jaw. Acute-phase reactions occurred in 21 patients (2.04%), and half of them arose after the first ibandronate injection. No new safety concerns were identified. Significant increases in BMD at 12 months relative to baseline were observed at the lumbar spine (4.84%, n= 187; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.47%-6.21%), femoral neck (2.73%, n= 166; 95% CI, 1.46%-4.01%), and total hip (1.93%, n= 133; 95% CI, 0.80%-3.07%). Significant reductions were observed in all BTMs at 12 months (n = 174 in tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b, n = 101 in procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide at baseline). The cumulative incidence of nontraumatic,new vertebral and nonvertebral fractures was 3.16% (95% CI, 2.12%-4.70%). Analyses in women only showed similar results to the overall population. Conclusions: These findings confirm the favorable safety and consistent effectiveness of ibandronate, and indicate that monthly IV ibandronate would be beneficial in daily practice for the treatment of Japanese patients with osteoporosis.

Investigation of chemically synthesized inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate [Ins(1,4,5)P3] analogs has led to the isolation of a novel binding protein with a molecular size of 130 kDa, characterized as a molecule with similar domain organization to phospholipase C-δ1 (PLC-δ1)but lacking the enzymatic activity. An isoform of the molecule was subsequently identified, and these molecules have been named PRIP (PLC-related, but catalytically inactive protein), with the two isoforms named PRIP-1 and -2. Regarding its ability to bind Ins(1,4,5)P3 via the pleckstrin homology domain, the involvement of PRIP-1 in Ins(1,4,5)P3-mediated Ca2+ signaling was examined using COS-1 cells overexpressing PRIP-1 and cultured neurons prepared from PRIP-1 knockout mice. Yeast two hybrid screening of a brain cDNA library using a unique N-terminus as bait identified GABARAP (GABAA receptor associated protein) and PP1 (protein phosphatase 1), which led us to examine the possible involvement of PRIP in GABAA receptor signaling. For this purpose PRIP knock-out mice were analyzed for GABAA receptor function in relation to the action of benzodiazepines from the lectrophysiological and behavioral aspects. During the course of these experiments we found that PRIP also binds to the β-subunit of GABAA receptors and PP2A (protein phosphtase 2A). Here, we summarize how PRIP is involved in Ins(1,4,5)P3-mediated Ca2+ signaling and GABAA receptor signaling based on the characteristics of binding molecules.

Acanthamoeba strains were photoirradiated in the presence of light-sensitive organic peroxides (hydroperoxynaphthalimide derivatives) including a Photo-Fenton reagent at 366 nm. The survival rates of Acantharnoeba strains determined after 20 h culture showed a significant decrease only upon photoirradiated conditions. The most effective hydroperoxynaphthalimides among these compounds was the bromohydroperoxynaphthalimide (Br-HPO II). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Br-HPO II is 100 times lower than that of hydrogen peroxide.
