Physical Educators’ Experiences Teaching Secondary English Language Learners
Takahiro Sato,Sue Sutherland 한국체육학회 2013 International journal of human movement science Vol.7 No.2
Ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity is becoming more prevalent in public schools within the United States (US). According to the Migration Policy Institute (2010), close to 5.3 million English Language Learners (ELLs) are enrolled in K-12 public schools in the US. Of these 5.3 million ELLs, many of whom attend urban schools, are also new to the US and are experiencing American culture for the first time. While common academic language in physical education is easily understood by English speaking students, this is not often the case for ELLs, putting them at a disadvantage in physical education. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine and analyze eight secondary physical education teachers' experiences of teaching English Language Learners (ELLs) in urban schools. Data were collected through face-to-face and email interviews and transcribed verbatim. Transcribed data were analyzed and reduced using the constant comparative method (Merriam, 1998). The recurring themes from this study were (a) teaching normative American activities, (b) challenges and concerns of teaching PE, and (c) gender roles and religions. On a positive note, these teachers were empathetic and supportive of the ELLs in urban secondary schools. Implications include strategies for assisting physical education teachers who teach ELLs.

In order to correct the power boost topology has been used for easy control. But conventional boost topology has the following drawbacks: switching voltage surge, cross conduction current and right-half-plane zero of its control transfer function. Furthermore, in this topology the output voltage is always higher than the input voltage. As a result, a first-stage boost PFC converter needs to be connected with a second-stage DC-DC converter. A new topology which can be used as single stage PFC converter is proposed in this paper.

Background/Aims: Magnifying endoscopic classification systems, such as the Japan narrow-band imaging (NBI) Expert Team (JNET) classification, have been widely used for predicting the histologic diagnosis and invasion depth of colorectal epithelial tumors. However, disagreement exists among observers regarding magnifying endoscopic diagnosis, because these classification systems are subjective. We herein investigated the utility of endoscopic microvascular density (eMVD) calculated from magnifying NBI endoscopic images in colorectal tumors. Methods: We reviewed magnifying NBI endoscopic images from 169 colorectal epithelial tumors (97 adenomas, 72 carcinomas/high-grade dysplasias) resected endoscopically or surgically. The eMVD on magnifying NBI endoscopic images was evaluated using image-editing software, and relationships between eMVD and clinical, endoscopic, and pathological findings were retrospectively analyzed. Results: The eMVD in carcinomas (0.152±0.079) was significantly higher than that in adenomas (0.119±0.059, P<0.05). The best cutoff value for distinguishing carcinoma from adenoma was 0.133. Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were 56.9%, 67.0%, and 62.7%, respectively. In addition, JNET type 2B tumors showed significantly higher eMVD (0.162±0.079) compared to type 2A tumors (0.111±0.050, P<0.05). Conclusions: The eMVD as determined by magnifying NBI endoscopy is considered to be a possible objective indicator for differentiating colorectal carcinomas from adenomas.
