        Open Access : Effect of concentrate supplementation on nutrient digestibility and growth of Brahman crossbred cattle fed a basal diet of grass and rice straw

        Background: An experiment was conducted in Vietnam to test the hypothesis that total dry matter (DM) intake and liveweight (LW) gain would increase in a curvilinear manner with increasing amounts of concentrate offered. Method: There were five treatments: a basal diet of Guinea grass fed at 1 % of LW and rice straw fed ad libitum (T0), or this diet supplemented with concentrate at 0.6 (T1), 1.2 (T2), 1.8 (T3), or 2.4 % of LW (T4). The concentrate comprised locally available ingredients, namely cassava chips, rice bran, crushed rice grain, fishmeal, salt, and urea, mixed manually. Results: Concentrate intake increased from T0 to T3, but there was no difference in concentrate intake between T3 and T4. Total feed intake increased in a curvilinear manner from 4.0 to 6.4 kg DM/d as the quantity of concentrate consumed increased. The substitution of concentrate for grass and rice straw increased with increasing consumption of concentrate and was as high as 0.49 kg DM reduction per kg of concentrate consumed. LW gain increased curvilinearly, with significant differences between T0 (0.092 kg/d), T1 (0.58 kg/d) and T2 (0.79 kg/d); but there were no significant differences in LW gain between T2, T3 (0.83 kg/d) and T4 (0.94 kg/d).With increasing amount of concentrate in the diet, the digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, and crude fat increased, but NDF digestibility decreased. Conclusion: Based on these results, young Vietnamese Brahman-cross growing cattle will respond to a locally-sourced concentrate mix offered at a level of up to 1.2 % of LW.

      • Search for admixture of scalar top quarks in the tt@? lepton + jets final state at s=1.96 TeV

        A search for pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark, t@?<SUB>1</SUB>, is performed in the lepton+jets channel using 0.9 fb<SUP>-1</SUP> of data collected by the DO experiment. Kinematic differences between t@?<SUB>1</SUB>t@?@?<SUB>1</SUB> and the dominant top quark pair production background are used to separate the two processes. First limits from Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider for the scalar top quark decaying to a chargino and a b quark (t@?<SUB>1</SUB>->χ@?<SUB>1</SUB><SUP>+</SUP>b) are obtained for scalar top quark masses of 130-190 GeV and chargino masses of 90-150 GeV.

      • Search for charged Higgs bosons in top quark decays

        We present a search for charged Higgs bosons in top quark decays. We analyze the e+jets, μ+jets, ee, eμ, μμ, τe and τμ final states from top quark pair production events, using data from about 1 fb<SUP>-1</SUP> of integrated luminosity recorded by the DO experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We consider different scenarios of possible charged Higgs boson decays, one where the charged Higgs boson decays purely hadronically into a charm and a strange quark, another where it decays into a τ lepton and a τ neutrino and a third one where both decays appear. We extract limits on the branching ratio B(t->H<SUP>+</SUP>b) for all these models. We use two methods, one where the tt@? production cross section is fixed, and one where the cross section is fitted simultaneously with B(t->H<SUP>+</SUP>b). Based on the extracted limits, we exclude regions in the charged Higgs boson mass and tanβ parameter space for different scenarios of the minimal supersymmetric standard model.

        An Investigation Into the Degree of Sinus Mucosal Delivery of Inhaled Black Cumin Volatile and Peppermint Essential Oils

        The aim of this study was to investigate the quantity of volatile components reaching the sinus mucosa (SM) by inhalation, which is responsible for the therapeutic effect, as a first step toward targeted drug design. In this study, 18 Wistar-Albino female rats with an average weight between 200 and 250 g were used. The rats to be used in the study were randomized: Black cumin (BC) essential oil group (group 1) (n = 6), Peppermint essential oil (PEO) group (group 2) (n = 6), and Control (group 3) (n = 6). Volatile oils were inhaled in group 1 and 2; in the control group volatile oils were not inhaled. In all groups, SM was removed and essential volatile oil composition was determined. In group 1, α-pinene was identified as the principal component in the gas phase from five different glass bottles containing SM. The data obtained were evaluated using the single sample T-test and results show that the α-pinene component in the group of inhaled BC essential oil reached significance (P < .001) when compared with the control group. The active component of the BC essential oil could not be identified as thymoquinone. In group 2, eucalyptol (1,8-cineole) was identified as the principal component in the gas phase from five different glass bottles containing SM. The data obtained were evaluated using the single sample T-test and it was found that the eucalyptol component in the group which inhaled PEO reached statistical significance (P < .001) compared with the control group. In group 3, no volatile oil compounds were detected. We have demonstrated that both oils (BC and peppermint) are delivered to the SM. There is a need for the optimum dose to be clarified by different methods of measurement than those used in the spectrometric data we have obtained. We are convinced that our work will lead to pharmacological, toxicological, and subsequent clinical trials in this area.

      • Generation of Transgenic Mice Overexpression Mouse RESISTIN

        The hormone resistin is associated with typeII diabetes mellitus in rodent model. Resistin impairs glucose tolerance and insulin action. A new class of anti-diabetic drugs were called thiazolidinediones (TZDs) downregulates a resistin which is induced during adipocyte differentiation. But the connection between increased adiposity and resistin remains unknown. The objectives of this study was to clone a mouse resistin cDNA and to generate transgenic mice overexpressing mouse resistin gene. The 555 bp of mouse resistin was amplified from mob cDNAS by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloned into pCR(R)/ 2.1 TOPO T-vector. Mouse resistin mRNA on the basis of Genbank sequence (acession no. AF323080). Then, the PCR product was cloned into pTargeTTM/ mammalian expression vector that has pCMV promoter and chimeric intron. Restriction enzyme analysis with BamH I and Not I was carried out to determine an orientation of the insert in the vector. The pCMV-mus/resistin gene was prepared from previous recombinant pTargeTTM/-mus/resistin by digestion of Bgl II, and has used for microinjection into pronuclei of one cell embryos. The microinjected embryos were transfered to pseudopregnant foster-mother. Mouse resistin expression was detected in transgenic F1 mice by Reverse Transcriptase- Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR). Resistin gene expression mouse has heavier body weight which was measured higher level of plasma glucose than that of normal mouse. And in diet-induced experiments, the abdominal fat pads were isolated from each 24h starvation and re-feeding after fasting group mice that were assessed by RT-PCR analysis. In fasting group mice, resistin expression was higher than that of re-feeding group mice. This result suggests that the resistin gene overexpressing mice may be became to obesity and be useful as an animal disease model to be diabetes mellitus caused by insulin resistance of resistin.

      • Piezoelectric and Dielectric Properties of Lead-Free (1-x)(Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3-xBiFeO3 Ceramics

        <P>Dielectric and piezoelectric properties of lead-free (1-x)(Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3-xBiFeO(3) ceramics prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction method were studied in the range of x = 0 similar to 40 mol%. A tetragonal perovskite structure was maintained at x = 0 similar to 10 mol% forming a solid solution between (Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3 and BiFeO3 with no secondary phase. Piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)) increased from 31 pC/N at x = 0 mol% to 64 pC/N at x = 6 mol% and then decreased with further addition of x. Depolarization temperature (T-d) gradually decreased with increasing x from 302 degrees C at x = 0 mol% to 163 degrees C at x = 20 mol% and slightly increased up 180 degrees C at x = 40 mol%.</P>

        Effects of Systemic and Local Interferon Beta-1a on Epidural Fibrosis

        Study Design: Level 1 randomized controlled study. Purpose: To investigate the effects of systemic and local interferon-beta-1a (IFN-β-1a) on prevention of epidural fibrosis using histopathological parameters. Overview of Literature: Epidural fibrosis involves fibroblastic invasion of nerve roots into the epidural space. Formation of dense fibrous tissue causes lumbar and radicular pain. Many surgical techniques and several materials have been proposed in the literature, but no study has assessed the effect of IFN-β-1a on prevention of epidural fibrosis. Methods: Forty-eight adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into six groups of eight: sham group, control group, systemic 44 μg IFN-β-1a group and 22 μg IFN-β-1a group (after laminectomy and discectomy, 0.28 mL and 0.14 mL IFN-β-1a applied subcutaneously three times for a week, respectively), local 44 μg IFN-β-1a group (laminectomy and discectomy, followed by 0.28 mL IFN-β-1a on the surgical area), and local 22 μg IFN-β-1a group (laminectomy and discectomy, followed by 0.14 mL IFN-β-1a on the surgical area). All rats were sacrificed after 4 weeks and groups were evaluated histopathologically. Results: Compared with sham and control groups, significantly less epidural fibrosis, dural adhesion, and fibroblast cell density were observed in the local and systemic 44 μg IFN-β-1a groups. No other differences were evident between the local and systemic groups. Conclusions: IFN-β-1a is effective in preventing epidural fibrosis with systemic and local application.

      • YBa₂Cu₃O_(7-x) 세라믹과 YBa₂Cu₃O_(7-x)/Ag 복합체에서의 영率 對 氣空率의 상관관계

        YBa₂Cu₃O_(7-x) 초전도 세라믹 재료와 YBa₂Cu₃O_(7-x)/Ag 복합체의 명율에 미치는 기공율의 효과에 대하여 연구하였다. 서로 다른 기공율을 갖는 소결 시편의 영율을 상온에서 衝擊?? 起法(Impulse Excitation Technique)으로 측정하였다. 측정된 데이터를 영율과 기공율과의 상관관계에 대한 두 가지의 관계식-선형방정식과 스프리그스의 지수함수 방정식-과 비교함으로써 적합한 정량적 관계식을 구하고자 하였는데, 표준오차로 볼 때, 후자가 상대적으로 양호한 것으로 나타났다. 스프리그스의 관계식에 포함되어 있는 상수를 구해본 결과, 세라믹의 경우 3.7 복합체의 경우 3.84로 매우 근사한 것으로 밝혀져, 두 물질이 유사한 기공구조를 갖는다는 것을 보였다. 복합체의 영율은 세라믹의 그것보다 낮았는데, 이론적 영율의 상한과 하한과 비교함으로써 그 정량적 관계에 대한 이해가 시도되었다. The effect of porosity on the Young's modulus in YBa₂Cu₃O_{7-x} ceramics and YBa₂Cu₃O_{7-x}/25%Ag composites was studied. Young's moduli of the samples with various porosities were measured with the Impulse Excitation Technique. When the experimental data were fitted with the linear equation and the Spriggs exponential equation, both were found to be reasonably good with a little superioty in the latter, represented by the lower standard error. The b constant in the Spriggs equation was determined t o be 3 . 7 and 3.8 for the ceramics and the composites. respectively, implying the similarity of the pore structures of two different materials. The understanding of the effect of the addition of silver on a decrease in the Young's modulus was attempted by comparing the data with theoretical upper and lower bound of the modulus in the composites.

        A NEW MODELLING OF TIMELIKE Q-HELICES

        In this study, we mean that timelike q-helices are curves whose q-frame fields make a constant angle with a non-zero fixed axis. We present the necessary and sufficient conditions for timelike curves via the q-frame to be q-helices in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space. Then we find some results of the relations between q-helices and Darboux q-helices. Furthermore, we portray Darboux q-helices as special curves whose Darboux vector makes a constant angle with a non-zero fixed axis by choosing the curve as one of the types of q-helices, and also the general case.
