Beta particle energy spectra shift due to self-attenuation effects in environmental sources
Thomas Theakston Alton,Stephen David Monk,David Cheneler 한국원자력학회 2017 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.49 No.7
In order to predict and control the environmental and health impacts of ionizing radiation in environmentalsources such as groundwater, it is necessary to identify the radionuclides present. Beta-emittingradionuclides are frequently identified by measuring their characteristic energy spectra. The presentwork shows that self-attenuation effects from volume sources result in a geometry-dependent shift inthe characteristic spectra, which needs to be taken into account in order to correctly identify the radionuclidespresent. These effects are shown to be compounded due to the subsequent shift in thephoton spectra produced by the detector, in this case an inorganic solid scintillator (CaF2:Eu) monitoredusing a silicon photomultiplier. Using tritiated water as an environmentally relevant, and notoriouslydifficult to monitor case study, analytical predictions for the shift in the energy spectra as a function ofdepth of source have been derived. These predictions have been validated using Geant4 simulations andexperimental results measured using bespoke instrumentation.

Background: The purpose of this study was to identify demographics and risk factors associated with unplanned 30-day readmission and reoperation following open procedures for shoulder instability and examine recent trends in open shoulder instability procedures. Methods: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) database was queried using current procedural terminology (CPT) codes 23455, 23460, and 23462 to find patients who underwent shoulder instability surgery from 2015 to 2019. Independent sample Student t-tests and chi-square tests were used in univariate analyses to identify demographic, lifestyle, and perioperative variables related to 30-day readmission following repair for shoulder instability. Multivariate logistic regression modeling was subsequently performed. Results: In total, 1,942 cases of open surgical procedures for shoulder instability were identified. Within our study sample, 1.27% of patients were readmitted within 30 days of surgery, and 0.85% required reoperation. Multivariate logistic regression modeling confirmed that the following patient variables were associated with a statistically significant increase in the odds of readmission: open anterior bone block/Latarjet-Bristow procedure, being a current smoker, and a long hospital stay (all P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression modeling confirmed statistically significant increased odds of reoperation with an open anterior bone block or Latarjet-Bristow procedure (P<0.05). Conclusions: Unplanned 30-day readmission and reoperation after open shoulder instability surgery is infrequent. Patients who are current smokers, have an open anterior bone block or Latarjet-Bristow procedure, or a longer than average hospital stay have higher odds of readmission than others. Patients who undergo an open anterior bone block or Latarjet-Bristow procedure have higher odds of reoperation than those who undergo an open soft-tissue procedure.

Technology is reshaping the grocery shopping experience. This case study analyzes the journey of Honestbee, an online grocery and food delivery company, one of the forerunners of this digital transformation of modern grocery retail. Founded in Singapore in 2015, Honestbee has expanded from online platform services to brick-and-mortar verticals with Habitat - a supermarket, specialty fresh grocer, online fulfilment centre, retail innovation hub and experiential dining destination in Singapore. Organizational management which culminated in cash flow issues are among the biggest obstacles that Honestbee faces as underpins the recent negativity publicity as well as cutting of global staff and suspension of some overseas services. Nevertheless, in spite of the current financial obstacles, Honestbee is still poised for success in the region as it tightens its business focus on Singapore, Taiwan and the Philippines with plans to not only to extend new retail through Habitat to other overseas markets but also to strengthen inventory management solutions as a promising vertical. The future of retail is not just digital but involves a reimagination of the current shopping experience. In this regard alone, Honestbee merits study.

We report on the applicability oj a method recently developed in our laboratory for measuring the antioxidant potential of isolated chemicals and extracts derived from natural products. Peroxyl radicals generated by thermal homolysis of 2,2'-azobis-amidinopropane (ABAP) oxidize $\alpha$-keto-${\gamma}$-methiolbutyric acid (KMBA) to ethylene, which is monitored by gas chromatography. Inhibition of ethylene formation in the presence of antioxidants that compete with KMBA for peroxyl radicals is the basis of the Total Oxyradical Scavenging Capacity Assay (TOSCA; Winston et al., 1998). Antioxidative activities of water-soluble extracts of American green tea, the anti-hepatotoxic flavonolignan from milk thistle (Silybum marianum) silybin, Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761, and a series of naturally occuring sesquiterpene lactones (all ger-macranolides found in in fungi, liverworts, and plants) were studied. The specific TOSC value per $\mu$M silybin was 5.2, which is essentially comparable to that of Trolo $x^{ⓡ}$, a water-soluble vitamine E analog. Tea and Ginkgo extracts exhibited potent peroxyl radical scavenging capacity with values, respectively of =1700 and 1000 $\mu$mols Trolo $x^{ⓡ}$ equivalent per gram dry matter. The known anti-inflammatory activity of some germacranolides prompted study of their antioxidant capacity. None of the lactones exhibited antioxidant capacity toward peroxyl radicals comparable to Trolo $x^{ⓡ}$; costunilide, the most lipophilic, had a TOSC value = to glutathione. The potential role of peroxyl radicals in lipidperoxidation, other cellular damage, and var-ious disease states suggest a possible preventive role for silybin, green tea and Ginkgo biloba in oxidative stress caused by these free radical species.ecies.

Data recorded by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider are analyzed to search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with b quarks. The search is performed in the three-b-quark channel using multijet-triggered events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2 fb-1. In the absence of any significant excess above background, limits are set on the cross section multiplied by the branching ratio in the Higgs boson mass range 90 to 300 GeV, extending the excluded regions in the parameter space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model.

We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson in 9.5 fb-1 of pp@? collisions at s=1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The final state considered contains a pair of b jets and is characterized by an imbalance in transverse energy, as expected from pp@?→ZH→νν@?bb@? production. The search is also sensitive to the WH→@?νbb@? channel when the charged lepton is not identified. The data are found to be in good agreement with the expected background. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, we set a limit at the 95% C.L. on the cross section σ(pp@?→[Z/W]H), assuming standard model branching fractions, that is a factor of 4.3 times larger than the theoretical standard model value, while the expected factor is 3.9. The search is also used to measure a combined WZ and ZZ production cross section that is a factor of 0.94+/-0.31(stat)+/-0.34(syst) times the standard model prediction of 4.4 pb, with an observed significance of 2.0 standard deviations.

We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson in final states with an electron or muon and a hadronically decaying tau lepton in association with zero, one, or two or more jets using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 7.3 fb-1 collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The analysis is sensitive to Higgs boson production via gluon-gluon fusion, associated vector boson production, and vector boson fusion, and to Higgs boson decays to ττ, WW, ZZ and bb@? pairs. Observed (expected) limits are set on the ratio of 95% C.L. upper limits on the cross section times branching ratio, relative to those predicted by the Standard Model, of 22 (14) at a Higgs boson mass of 115 GeV and 6.8 (7.7) at 165 GeV.
