Anisotropic Magnetization and Charge Density Wave in a Na0.78CoO2 Single Crystal

        이종수,J. B. Peng,S. M. Lee,C. T. Lin 한국물리학회 2008 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.52 No.2

Single crystals of γ-Na0.78CoO2 were grown using the floating zone method. The static magnetic susceptibility M/H(T) of Na0.78CoO2 showed significant anisotropic behavior for different crystal orientations of H ∥ (ab) and H ∥ (c). While (M/H)ab(T) for a magnetic field H= 1 T in an ab-plane followed the Curie-Weiss law at high temperatures (T ≥ 100 K), (M/H)c(T) for H ∥ c-axis deviated from Curie-Weiss behavior, which may be understood by using phonon localization from strong electron-phonon coupling. The impurity spin-1/2 effect, dressed by spin fluctuation, was significant at low temperatures (T ≤ 30 K) for both field orientations of H ∥ (ab) and H ∥ (c). The electrical resistivity ρ(T) of Na0.78CoO2 showed a clear metallic character down to 16 K, with a weak increase in the resistivity ρ(T) at low temperatures T ≤ 16 K). The gap-like behavior of ρ(T) was insensitive to applied magnetic fields up to 7 T, which indicates a non-degenerate charge gap. The electrical conductivity σ(T) followed the density wave behavior with a small energy gap (0.64 meV) at low temperatures. We discussed the electrical resistivity ρ(T)$ and the anisotropic M/H(T) behavior of Na0.78CoO2 in terms of the charge density wave and a strong electron-phonon interaction. • Observation of the topological surface state in the nonsymmorphic topological insulator KHgSb

        Liang, A. J.,Jiang, J.,Wang, M. X.,Sun, Y.,Kumar, N.,Shekhar, C.,Chen, C.,Peng, H.,Wang, C. W.,Xu, X.,Yang, H. F.,Cui, S. T.,Hong, G. H.,Xia, Y.-Y.,Mo, S.-K.,Gao, Q.,Zhou, X. J.,Yang, L. X.,Felser, C. American Physical Society 2017 Physical review. B Vol.96 No.16

Topological insulators represent unusual topological quantum states, typically with gapped bulk band structure but gapless surface Dirac fermions protected by time-reversal symmetry. Recently, a distinct kind of topological insulator resulting from nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry was proposed in the KHgX (X = As, Sb, Bi) compounds. Unlike regular topological crystalline insulators, the nonsymmorphic glide-reflection symmetry in KHgX guarantees the appearance of an exotic surface fermion with hourglass shape dispersion (where two pairs of branches switch their partners) residing on its (010) side surface, contrasting to the usual two-dimensional Dirac fermion form. Here, by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the electronic structures of KHgSb on both (001) and (010) surfaces and reveal the unique in-gap surface states on the (010) surface with delicate dispersion consistent with the 'hourglass Fermion' recently proposed. Our experiment strongly supports that KHgSb is a nonsymmorphic topological crystalline insulator with hourglass fermions, which serves as an important step to the discovery of unique topological quantum materials and exotic fermions protected by nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry.

Xylanase Supplementation Improved Digestibility and Performance of Growing Pigs Fed Chinese Double-low Rapeseed Meal Inclusion Diets: In vitro and In vivo Studies

        Fang, Z.F.,Peng, J.,Tang, T.J.,Liu, Z.L.,Dai, J.J.,Jin, L.Z. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2007 Animal Bioscience Vol.20 No.11

An in vitro and a feeding trial were conducted to investigate the effect of xylanase supplementation on the feeding value of growing pig diets containing high proportions of Chinese double-low rapeseed meals (DLRM). Seven diets were formulated to meet NRC (1998) nutrient requirements. Diet 1 based on corn-soybean meal was used as positive control 1, and diet 2, a practical diet which incorporated a conventional level of Chinese DLRM (60 g/kg diet), as positive control 2. Diet 3 contained a higher level of DLRM (100 g/kg diet) as the negative control. Diet 3 plus xylanase at 0.10, 0.25, 0.50 and 0.70 g/kg diet created diets 4, 5, 6 and 7, respectively. The seven diets were incubated in triplicate with the in vitro two-stage enzyme incubation method to predict responses of diets to xylanase in terms of digestibility of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF). In vitro, the negative control had the lowest CP and NDF digestibility. Both DM and CP digestibility were increased (p<0.05) owing to xylanase supplementation either at 0.50 or 0.70 g/kg diet, and NDF digestibility was improved following xylanase addition at all of the test levels. There was a high linear correlation ($r^2>90$, p<0.05) between the activity concentration of the enzyme when transformed into its logarithmic value and in vitro digestibility coefficients of DM, CP or NDF. In the feeding trial, 112 crossbred pigs were randomly assigned to seven dietary treatments with 16 replicate pens of one pig each. An obvious dose effect on growth rate was observed ($r^2=0.79$, p<0.05) within the inclusion levels of xylanase. Compared with the negative control, xylanase addition at 0.70 g/kg diet resulted in significantly increased ADG (878 g/d vs. 828 g/d, p<0.05), and a tendency towards improved growth rate (868 g/d vs. 828 g/d, p = 0.10) was also observed following the inclusion of xylanase at 0.50 g/kg diet. It would appear that the nutrient utilization of corn and Chinese DLRM diets by pigs could be enhanced by an appropriate amount of xylanase addition. The in vitro and in vivo results suggested that the in vitro incubation method is feasible for predicting responses of pigs to exogenous enzymes and identifying those preparations that possess potential for improvement of the nutritive values of feedstuffs.

Anti-adherence of Antibacterial Peptides and Oligosaccharides and Promotion of Growth and Disease Resistance in Tilapia

        Peng, K.S.,She, R.P.,Yang, Y.R.,Zhou, X.M.,Liu, W.,Wu, J.,Bao, H.H.,Liu, T.L. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2007 Animal Bioscience Vol.20 No.4

Four hundred and fifty tilapias ($6.77{\pm}0.23$ g) were assigned randomly to six groups to evaluate the feasibility of the tested antibacterial peptides (ABPs) and oligosaccharides as substitutes for antibiotics. The control group was fed with a commercial tilapia diet; other five groups were fed with the same commercial diet supplemented with konjac glucomannan (KGLM), cluster bean galactomannan (CBGAM), and three animal intestinal ABPs derived from chicken, pig and rabbit at 100 mg/kg respectively. After 21 days of feeding, growth, disease resistance, and in vivo anti-adherence were determined. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of tested agents on adhesion of Aeromonas veronii biovar sobria (A.vbs) strain BJCP-5 to tilapia enteric epithelia in vitro was assessed by cell-ELISA system. As a result, the tested agents supplemented at 100 mg/kg show significant benefit to tilapia growth and disease resistance (p<0.05), and the benefit may be correlated with their interfering in the contact of bacteria with host mucosal surface. Although none of the tested agents did inhibit the growth of BJCP-5 in tryptic soy broth at $100{\mu}g/ml$, all of them did inhibit the adhesion of A.vbs to tilapia enteric epithelia in vivo and in vitro. In vitro mimic assays show that three ABPs at low concentrations of $25{\mu}g/ml$ and $2.5{\mu}g/ml$ have the reciprocal dose-dependent anti-adherence effect. The inhibition of ABPs may be correlated with a cation bridging and/or receptor-ligand binding, but not with hydrophobicity. The KGLM and CBGAM inhibited the adherence of BJCP-5 to tilapia enteric epithelia with dose-dependent manner in vitro, and this may be through altering bacterial hydrophobicity and interfering with receptor-ligand binding. Our results indicate that the anti-adherence of the tested ABPs and oligosaccharides may be one of the mechanisms in promoting tilapia growth and resistance to A.vbs.

Effect of Rapid Thermal Annealing On the Properties of InN Epilayers

        J. Gao,B. Liu,Y. Pan,T. Peng,K. M. Wu,C. Liu 한국물리학회 2008 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.52 No.-

InN thin films were epitaxially grown on Al₂O₃substrates at 450℃ by radio-frequency assisted molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Rapid thermal annealing (RTA) was performed on the InN thin films at different temperatures for 30 sec with flowing N₂. The surface morphological, structural and electronic properties of the InN epilayers before and after RTA were studied by atomic force microscopy, x-ray diffraction and Hall-effect measurements. It is found that the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the InN (0002) rocking curve and the carrier concentration decrease as the annealing temperature increases. The sample annealed at 500℃ has the minimum FWHM of 383 arcsec, a carrier concentration of 1.7 × 10 17 cm-³$, and a mobility of 703 cm²V-1s-1. The improved quality of InN epilayer is attributed to the removal of the anti-site and interstitial defects during RTA. Such an annealing process may make InN particularly useful in developing electronic devices. Stabilizing the defect-induced dilute magnetic semiconductors: Li-doping in GaN with Ga vacancies

        Nisar, J.,Peng, X.,Kang, T. W.,Ahuja, R. Editions de Physique 2011 Europhysics letters Vol.93 No.5

By means of first-principles calculations, we have investigated the effects of various Li-doping on the exchange interaction and the formation energy in bulk GaN with Ga vacancies. Although the Ga vacancies can induce ferromagnetism in GaN, their formation energy is rather high. Our calculations show that Li-doping can effectively tune the formation energy of Ga vacancies. It is revealed that the stabilizing effect depends on whether the number of holes is increased or decreased after Li-doping. When Li atoms substitutes for N atoms or occupies the interstitial sites, the holes are reduced and the formation energy of Ga vacancies is lowered. In contrast, Li substituting for Ga generates additional holes in the system, leading to an enhancement of the formation energy of Ga vacancies and making the system less stable.

Genetic Status of ESR Locus and Other Unidentified Genes As sociated with Litter Size in Chinese Indigenous Tongcheng Pig Breed after a Long Time Selection

        Zhu, M.J.,Yu, M.,Liu, B.,Zhu, Z.Z.,Xiong, T.A.,Fan, B.,Xu, S.P.,Du, Y.Q.,Peng, Z.Z.,Li, K. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2004 Animal Bioscience Vol.17 No.5

The Tongcheng pig breed is a famous Chinese indigenous breed. The Ministry of Agriculture of China has filed it as 1 of 19 national key conservation breeds selected from more than 100 Chinese indigenous pig breeds in 2000. In order to improve the reproductive performance, it has been intensively selected to increase the litter size for about 10 years. The population randomly sampled from conservation nucleus of eight families in the Tongcheng pigs was genotyped for identification of their estrogen receptor locus polymorphisms with the PCR-RFLPs method. Only AB heterozygotes and BB homozygotes were detected, and $X^2$ test demonstrated that the locus was in disequilibrium at a significant level (p<0.05). In the present paper, the litter sizes in different parities were regarded as different traits. Holistic status of other unspecific and unidentified genes was estimated by using the statistical methods. Coefficients of kurtosis and skewness showed that the litter size still presented segregating characteristic in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th parities. Analysis of homogeneity of variance between families confirmed the results for the 5th, 7th and 8th parities. The heritability of litter size for the 1st to 10th parities was estimated with paternal half-sib model and individual estimated breeding values (EBVs) were evaluated by a single trait animal model as well. We found that the averages of EBVs for litter size in each parity did not differ significantly between genotypes, despite the significant difference for original phenotype records in the 3rd, 4th and 5th parities (p<0.05 or p<0.01). The results may be explained by the deduction that the polymorphisms of ESR locus are no longer the important genetic base of litter size variation when the frequency of allele B accumulated in the experience of selection procedure, and further conferring that there exist special genes associated with litter size in the recent Tongcheng pigs population can be made.

      • Computational Screening of Nanoporous Materials for Hexane and Heptane Isomer Separation

        Chung, Yongchul G.,Bai, Peng,Haranczyk, Maciej,Leperi, Karson T.,Li, Peng,Zhang, Hongda,Wang, Timothy C.,Duerinck, Tim,You, Fengqi,Hupp, Joseph T.,Farha, Omar K.,Siepmann, J. Ilja,Snurr, Randall Q. American Chemical Society 2017 Chemistry of materials Vol.29 No.15

Computational high-throughput screening was carried out to assess a large number of-experimentally reported metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and zeolites for their utility in hexane isomer separation. Through the work, we identified many MOFs and zeolites with high selectivity (SL+M > 10) for the group of n-hexane, 2-methylpentane, and 3-methylpentane (linear and monobranched isomers) versus 2,2-dimethylbutane and 2,3-dimethylbutane (dibranched isomers). This group of selective sorbents includes VICDOC (Fe-2(BDP)(3)), a MOF with triangular pores that is known to exhibit high isomer selectivity and capacity. For three of these structures, the adsorption isotherms for a 10-component mixture of hexane and heptane isomers were calculated. Subsequent simulations of column breakthrough curves showed that the DEYVUA MOF exhibits a longer process cycle time than VICDOC MOF or MRE zeolite, which are previously reported, high-performing materials, illustrating the importance of capacity in designing MOFs for practical applications. Among the identified candidates, we synthesized and characterized a MOF in a new copper form with high predicted adsorbent capacity (q(L+M) > 1.2 mol/L) and moderately high selectivity (SL+M approximate to 10). Finally, we examined the role of pore shape in hexane isomer separations, especially of triangular-shaped pores. We show through the potential energy surface and three-dimensional siting analyses that linear alkanes do not populate the corners of narrow triangular channels and that structures with nontriangular pores can efficiently separate hexane isomers. Detailed thermodynamic analysis illustrates how differences in the free energy of adsorption contribute to shape selective separation in nanoporous materials.

Tailoring the Impact Toughness of Sintered NdFeB Magnets via Surface Coating

        X. G. Cui,J. X. Pan,C. Y. Cui,P. Mei,X. H. Wang,C. Fang,T. Y. Ma,C. Wang,X. C. Peng 한국자기학회 2018 Journal of Magnetics Vol.23 No.1

Metallic coating by electroplating is commonly attractive for improving the corrosion resistance of sintered NdFeB magnets. However, its tailoring of mechanical characteristics for sintered NdFeB magnets has been seldom concerned. Herein, the impact toughnesses of sintered NdFeB magnets with various metallic coatings (Ni or Ni/Sn) were comparatively investigated. The results indicate that the impact toughnesses of sintered NdFeB magnets are both improved by Ni coating and Ni/Sn bilayer coating. And Ni/Sn bilayer coating exhibits more enhancement of the impact toughness, increased by 41.6% compared with the original magnet. Moreover, the microstructural observations of the metallic coatings and the fracture were conducted, and the enhanced mechanism of impact toughness for the magnet is analyzed. These findings may provide a reference for toughening the brittle materials.
