Many of the Korean intellectuals resisted against suppression of Japanese Imperialism with the people during the Japanese occupation period. Ryu Sang-Kyu was also one of those intellectuals. Ryu Sang-Kyu was born in Gang-gye of North Pyongan-do on 10th November, 1897. He entered Keijo Medical College as one of the first entering students in 1916. However, at the end of his third year, he participated in the 3·1 Independence Movement of Korea and was suspended from the college which was run by the Japanese on account of his participation. Then moving to Shanghai, he joined Heung Sa Dan(興士團), an active patriotic group fighting for independence of Korea. He initiated the provisional government of Korea as a network investigator and he played second string to Ahn Chang-Ho(安昌浩), one of major Korean independence activists for four years. In 1923, following Ahn Chang-Ho’s advice, he returned to Keijo Medical College to complete the course. Even in colonial Korea, he continued independence movement and was involved in Dong Woo Hoe(同友會), the branch of Heung Sa Dan in Korea. After the graduation of Keijo Medical College in 1927, he had served at the department of surgery in Keijo Medical College. In 1930, he participated in founding of the Korean Medical Association(朝鮮醫師協會). He also raised public awareness by writing to many articles on hygiene and public health issues in public journals and newspapers. In short, he did his best as an intellectual, a medical doctor, an activist of independence movement until he died from streptococcal infection on 7th July, 1936.

N/A The 19 months clinical experiences about 634 cases of laparoscpic surgery were reviewed at Sung-Ae General Hospital from July 1991 to Jan. 1993 The results were as follows; Among 168 cases of laparoscopic cholecystectomy and 5 cases of laparoscopic CBD exploration, we obtained better results with advantages of laparoscopic surgery including few complications, less morbidity and early return to work. In series of 361 cases of laparoscopic appendectomy, we obtained superior results especially in the cases of 1) uncertainty of clinically suspected appendicitis, 2) right lower quadrant pelvic pain without other pathology and 3) patients who wanted early return to work. In series of spontaneous pneumothorax with bullae and recurrent pneumothorax, the thoracoscopic bullectomy was much superior than open bullectomy. The laparoscopic Taylor procedures and laparoscopic bandlysis will be better choice in the management of intractable pain in duodenal ulcer and postoperative adhesion. The diagnostic laparoscopy will be much useful in the blunt and penetrating abdominal trauma.

<B>Purpose: </B>PET-CT is often used to differentiate benign or malignant thyroid incidentalomas. In this retrospective study, we evaluated whether the 18F-FDG uptake pattern and PET-CT findings improved accuracy over the standardized uptake value (SUV). <B>Methods:</B> 18F-FDG PET-CT was performed on 2,178 subjects from August, 2004, to October, 2007, in Sung-ae Hospital. PET-CT was performed on 806 patients (37%) with suspected or known nonthyroidal cancer and 1,372 healthy subjects (63%) without a previous history of cancer. We investigated the clinical characteristics of patients, history, standardized uptake value (SUV), ultrasonography, and hormone levels in blood. Thyroidal cancer was confirmed by ultrasonography-guided fine needle aspiration and pathology after thyroid operation. <B>Results:</B> The prevalence of focal thyroid lesions on PET-CT was 8.8% (191/2178). Thyroid cancer confirmation was 7.9% (15/191). The maximum SUV of malignant thyroid lesions were significantly higher than that of benign lesions (7.00±3.08 vs. 4.49±1.84, P<0.001). <B>Conclusion:</B> PET-CT image interpretation that includes 18F-FDG uptake and SUV is better than PET-CT alone for differentiating benign and malignant lesions. Thyroid cancer risk increases as SUVmax levels increase. <B>(Ko</B><B></B><B>rean J Endocrine Surg 2008;8:38-42)</B>

Background: The measurement of 24-hour uric acid excretion is important to evaluate the disease status as well as to select the kind of uric acid lowering agents in gouty patients. However, 24-hour urine collection is inconvenient, and frequently unreliable due to errors in collection. We investigated the utility of the random urine uric acid to creatinine ratio for predicting 24-hour urine uric acid excretion in gouty patients. Methods: The cross-sectional study included 37 gouty patients without any use of uric acid lowering agents. Random urine uric acid and creatinine specimens were obtained, and 24-hour urine collections were conducted to the evaluate uric acid excretion and renal function. Chronic kidney disease was defi ned as the creatinine clearance (CCr) levels below 60 ml/min/1.73 m2. Results: The mean of 24-hour uric acid excretion was 602.4±236.0 mg, and thoseof serum uric acid levels and CCr values were 7.31±1.31 mg/dl and 100.9±33.2 ml/ min/1.73 m2, respectively. Random urine uric acid to creatinine ratio was closely correlated with the absolute and log transformed 24-hour urine uric acid excretions (γ =0.450, p=0.005; γ=0.474, p=0.003, respectively). In the linear regression analysis, the amount of absolute 24-hour urine uric acid excretion was estimated by 0.812x (random urine uric acid to creatinine ratio) + 290.466 (R2=0.450, p=0.005). The correlation between random urine uric acid to creatinine ratio and 24-hour urine uric acid excretion was also found in the patients with chronic kidney disease (γ=0.900, p=0.037). Conclusions: Random urine uric acid to creatinine ratio showed positive correlation with the absolute and log transformed 24-hour urine uric acid excretions. The random urine uric acid to creatinine ratio would be a good predictor of 24-hour urine uric acid excretion in gouty patients.

Albumin nanoparticles have become an attractivecancer nanomedicine platform due to their pharmaceuticaladvantages. Recently, photothermal therapy has beenextensively applied to cancer treatment due to heat-inducedtumor ablation. Herein, we fabricated albumin nanoparticles(HSA-NPs) loaded with paclitaxel (PTX), indocyanine green(ICG; a hyperthermal agent) and hyaluronidase (HAase) thatbreaks down hyaluronan, a major component of the extracellularmatrix (ECM) in tumors. Synthesis was based on aslightly modifi ed nanoparticle albumin-bound (Nab™) technique. The prepared nanoparticles (PTX/ICG/HAase-HSANPs)had a spherical shape with an average size of ~ 110 nmand a zeta potential of ~ -30.4 mV. They displayed good colloidalstability and typical patterns of ICG, HSA and HAasein UV–VIS–NIR and circular dichroism spectroscopic analysis. PTX/ICG/HAase-HSA-NPs were found to have excellenthyperthermal eff ects in response to near-infrared laserirradiation (808 nm) (up to > 50 °C over 4 min). The hyperthermiaconducted by PTX/ICG/HAase-HSA-NPs resultedin signifi cant cytotoxicity to pancreatic AsPC-1 cells atboth severe (> 50 °C) and mild (41–42 °C) hyperthermal states in conjunction with the inherent cytotoxic activity ofpaclitaxel. Furthermore, the confocal images of AsPC-1 cellspheroids proved PTX/ICG/HAase-HSA-NPs were able topermeate deeply into the three-dimensional tumor tissuemimicry structure. Most of all, PTX/ICG/HAase-HSANPsmaintained all these physicochemical and anti-cancerproperties irrespective of the amount of embedded HAase(1–5 mg). Our results demonstrated that PTX/ICG/HAase-HSA-NPs are a promising hyperthermal/chemotherapeuticanticancer agent.
Chemical Modification of Bovine Brain Succinic Semialdehyde Reductase by Diethylpyrocarbonate
Choi,Soo Young,Jeon,Seong Gyu,Lee,Byung Ryong,Choi,Kyung Soon,Ahn,Yoon Kyung,Lee,Kil Soo,Yoon,Byung Hak,Choi,Eun-A,Bahn,Jae Hoon,Cho,Sung-Woo The Korea Science and Technology Center 1999 BMB Reports Vol.32 No.3
The NADPH-dependent succinic semialdehyde reductase is one of the key enzymes in the brain GABA shunt, and it catalyzes the formation of the neuromodulator γ-hydroxybutyrate from succinic semialdehyde. This enzyme was inactivated by diethylpyrocarbonate (DEP) with the second-order rate constant of 1.1×10³ M-¹min-¹ at pH 7.0, 25℃, showing a concomitant increase in absorbance at 242 nm due to the formation of N-carbethoxyhistidyl derivatives. Complete inactivation of succinic semialdehyde reductase required the modification of five histidyl residues per molecule of enzyme. However, only one residue was calculated to be essential for enzyme activity by a statistical analysis of the residual enzyme activity. The inactivation of the enzyme by DEP was prevented by preincubation of the enzyme with the coenzyme NADPH but not with the substrate succinic semialdehyde. These results suggest that an essential histidyl residue involved in the catalytic activity is located at or near the coenzyme binding site of the brain succinic semialdehyde reductase.

Nondestructive Damage Identification in a Truss Structure Using Time Domain Responses
Choi, Sang Hyn,Park, Soo Young 한국지진공학회 2003 한국지진공학회논문집 Vol.7 No.4
In this paper, an algorithm to locate and size damage in a complex truss structure using the time domain response is presented. Sampled response data for specific time interval is spatially expanded over the structure to obtain the mean train energy for each element of the structure. The mean strain energy for each element is, in turn, used to build a damage index that represents the ratio of the stiffness parameter of the pre-damaged to the post-damaged structure. The validity of the methodology is demonstrated using data from a numerical example of a space truss structure with simulated damage. Also in the example, the effects of noisy data on the proposed algorithm are examined by adding random noised to the response data
