        Effect of Amine Adlayer on Electrochemical Uric Acid Sensor Conducted on Electrochemically Reduced Graphene Oxide

        The electrochemical biosensing efficiency of uric acid (UA) detection on an electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO)-decorated electrode surface was studied by using various amine linkers used to immobilize ERGO. The amine linkers aminoethylphenyldiazonium, 2,2′-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine), 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and polyethyleneimine were coated on indium–tin–oxide electrode surfaces through chemical or electrochemical deposition methods. ERGO-decorated surfaces were prepared by the electrochemical reduction of graphene oxide (GO), which was immobilized on the amine-coated electrode surfaces through the electrostatic interaction between GO and the ammonium ion of the linker on the surface. We monitored the sensing results of electrochemical UA detection with differential pulse voltammetry. The ERGO-modified surface presented electrocatalytic oxidation of UA and ascorbic acid. Among the different amines tested, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane provided the best biosensing performance in terms of sensitivity and reproducibility.

        부산 장산 지역의 구과상(球球球) 유문암에 대한 암석학적 연구

        부산광역시 동부의 장산화산암체는 화산함몰체로 알려져 있고, 화산함몰체 외각부를 따라 구과상 유문암이 60°~90°의 각도로 수직유상구조를 보여주며 환상암맥으로 나타난다. 구과의 직경은 수 mm에서 2.8 cm 이상이며, 평균적으로 5~10 mm로 측정되었다. 이들 구과는 하나의 핵을 중심으로 방사상을 나타내는 단식 구과형과 육안상 흰색을 띠는 각을 가지면서 핵 부분을 중심으로 방사상을 나타내는 방사상 단식 구과형으로 비교적 단순한 형태를 보여주며, 이들 구과들이 서로 인접하여 합체된 포도송이와 같은 집합체를 보여주기도 한다. 구과의 동심원상 핵 부분에 대한 전자현미분석 결과, 은미정질 기질부 물질의 성분은 주로 SiO₂가 거의 82% 이상, Al₂O₃는 7~10%, Na₂O+K₂O는 8% 이하의 실리카 물질과 장석(새니딘)의 미세한 섬유상 교생으로 나타났다. 구과에 대한 X-선 회절분석 결과, 석영, 새니딘, 앨바이트 그리고 소규모의 운모, 카오린, 녹니석으로 구성되며, X-선 면분석 결과, 핵 부분은 SiO₂가 풍부하며, 각 부분은 Na₂O 또는 K₂O, Al₂O₃가 풍부하였다. 장산콜드론의 유문암 암맥에서 나타나는 구과의 깃털형과 비등형 결정 형태는 마그마 관입에 의한 이동속도보다 유리질 물질로부터 탈유리화작용이 더 빠른 속도로 진행되었고, 비교적 정체된 상태에서 급속한 냉각으로 형성되었음을 지시한다. 구과들은 고규산(75.4~75.7 wt.%) 유문암질 마그마로부터 유래되었다. Spherulitic rhyolite occur as part of ring dyke which showing a vertical flowage of 60°~90°, of the Jangsan cauldron was studied. The spherulites range in diameter from a few millimeters to 2.8 centimeters or more, and average 5~10 millimeters. It belongs to radiated simple spherulite type. They consist of a core of moderate brown dense material encased by a thin crust, a few millimeters thick at most of white grey material. The spherulites frequently have a radiating fibrous structure, which are thought to have formed as a consequence of rapid mineral growth caused by very fast cooling of the dykes in shallow depth near the surface. EPMA examination of the concentric-zoned core of spherulites show that they are mainly composed of cryptocrystalline-fibrous intergrowth of silica minerals and alkali feldspars which have SiO₂ 82% or more, Al₂O₃ 7~10%, Na₂O+K₂O less than 8%. The feldspar compositions of the spherulites lie essentially within the sanidine field. XRD examination show that spherulites are mainly composed of quartz, sanidine, albite with minor mica, kaolinite and chlorite. According to X-ray mapping, the spherulites are enriched in SiO₂ in the core and partly enriched Na₂O or K₂O, Al₂O₃ in the shell that reflect in compositional zoning with increasing spherulitic devitrification. The feathery and non-equant crystal shapes of spherulites from rhyolite dyke of Jangsan cauldron suggest that they may have formed during the rapid cooling of dyke under the static state, or faster velocity of devitrification from glassy materials than movement velocity of the magma intrusion. The spherulitic rhyolite originated from high-silica(75.4~75.7 wt.%) rhyolite magma.

        Estrogen activities and the cellular effects of natural progesterone from wild yam extract in mcf-7 human breast cancer cells.

        <P>We studied the estrogenic activity and cellular effect of wild yam extract in MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. The extract increased the activity of the progesterone receptor and pS2 genes at the mRNA levels in human breast cancer MCF-7 cells, although the effects were not as prominent as those of 17beta-estradiol (E(2)). Western blot analysis showed that the level of estrogen receptor alpha protein was down-regulated after treatment with E(2) or wild yam extract. Wild yam extract also inhibited proliferation of MCF-7 cells. These data indicate that wild yam extract acts as a weak phytoestrogen and protects against proliferation in human breast carcinoma MCF-7 cells.</P>

      • Molecular Cloning and Characterization of Carbonic Anhydrase XII from Pufferfish ( <i>Takifugu rubripes</i> )

        <P>In this study, an 1888-bp carbonic anhydrase XII (CA XII) sequence was cloned from the brain of the pufferfish, <I>Takifugu rubripes</I>. The cloned sequence contained a coding region of 1470-bp, which was predicted to translate into a protein of 490 amino acid residues. The predicted protein showed between 68–56% identity with the large yellow croaker (<I>Larimichthys crocea</I>), tilapia (<I>Oreochromis niloticus</I>), and Asian arowana (<I>Scleropages formosus</I>) CA XII proteins. It also exhibited 36% and 53% identity with human CA II and CA XII, respectively. The cloned sequence contained a 22 amino acid NH<SUB>2</SUB>-terminal signal sequence and three Asn-Xaa-Ser/Thr sequons, among which one was potentially glycosylated. Four cysteine residues were also identified (Cys-21, Cys-201, Cys-355, and Cys-358), two of which (Cys-21 and Cys-201) could potentially form a disulfide bond. A 22-amino acid COOH-terminal cytoplasmic tail containing a potential site for phosphorylation by protein kinase A was also found. The cloned sequence might be a transmembrane protein, as predicted from in silico and phylogenetic analyses. The active site analysis of the predicted protein showed that its active site residues were highly conserved with tilapia CA XII protein. Homology modeling of the pufferfish CA XII was done using the crystal structure of the extracellular domain of human carbonic anhydrase XII at 1.55 Å resolution as a template. Semi-quantitative reverse transcription (RT)-PCR, quantitative PCR (q-PCR), and in situ hybridization confirmed that pufferfish <I>CA XII</I> is highly expressed in the brain.</P>

        Mercury Ion Monitoring in Mercury Plating Bath by Anodic Stripping Voltammetry

        Anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) is successfully applied in mM level detection of mercury ion in an electroplating bath which is currently used in preparing a cathodic electrolyzer. Glassy carbon electrode is used for the detection and the optimum condition obtained is 10 s deposition at −1.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl and stripping by scanning from −1.4 to +0.4 V vs Ag/AgCl at 50 mV/s. By applying the method, the mercury ion concentration in the electroplating bath could be successfully monitored during the plating.

        비행청소년과 일반청소년의 식생활 비교 연구

        The relationship between dietary practices and juvenile delinquency was studied using a dietary survey. Subjects were selected from juvenile delinquents who were under the supervision of the Seoul probation Office of the Ministry of justice. The study group consisted of 52 male and 52 female delinquents. As a control group, 104 exemplary high school students were selected in Seoul. A questionnaire was designed to find out the subjects' general characteristics, dietary habits, lifestyle, eating behavior, food frequency, and nutrient intake using the 24-hour recall method. Compared to the exemplary students, the juvenile delinquents were significantly different in education level, family status, monthly allowance, residence status, breast fed, parents' education level, parents' concern. In dietary habits, fifty-eight percent of the juvenile delinquents ate 2 or fewer meals per day, preferred to eat with friends, and liked hot tasting foods. The juvenile delinquents consumed more ion drinks (OR = 9.26 CI: 3.83 - 22.37), rameon (OR = 7.67 CI: 3.21 - 18.33), cola (OR = 6.75 CI: 2.91 - 15.69), soft drinks (OR = 6.12 CI: 2.53 - 14.81), steamed korean sausage (OR = 5.34 CI:2.31 - 12.32), hamburger (OR = 5.15 CI: 1.91 - 13.87), kimbab (OR = 3.63 CI: 1.76 - 7.46), ddokbokgi (OR = 3.17 CI: 1.58 - 6.38), candy (OR = 3.08 CI: 1.41 - 6.73), white rice (OR = 2.59 CI: 1.19 - 5.64), hotdog (OR = 2.52 CI: 1.31 - 4.86), and less rice mixed with grains (OR = 0.02 CI: 0.01 - 0.05), tangerine (OR = 0.06 CI: 0.02 - 0.20), milk (OR = 0.29 CI: 0.14 - 0.60), roasted fish (OR = 0.32 CI: 0.28 - 0.99, anchovy (OR = 0.35 CI: 0.17 - 0.72), seaweed (OR = 0.37 CI: 0.16 - 0.83), and tofu (OR = 0.48 CI: 0.23 - 0.99) than the exemplary students. With respect to the juvenile delinquents, the nutrient intakes lower than 75% of the Korean RDA were for riboflavin (75.0%) and calcium (47.9%) among the boys, and calcium (46.9%) and iron (60.4%) among the girls. To prevent juvenile delinquency, nutritional education and well-balanced school food service meals should be emphasized so as to improve the management of dietary practices.
