        Prevalence and Psychiatric Comorbidities of Internet Addiction in a Nationwide Sample of Korean Adults

        The goal of the study was to examine the prevalence and psychiatric comorbidities of Internet addiction in a nationwide sample of Korean adults. Among a total of 6,022 participants involved in Korean Epidemiological Catchment Area study in 2011, 3,723 Internet users were assessed for their Internet addiction using Young’s 8-item Diagnostic Questionnaire. The results showed that of the 3,723 Internet users, 39 (1.0%) had Internet addiction. Addicted Internet users were younger, more likely to be males and unemployed compared to non-addicted Internet users. Internet addiction was associated with alcohol and nicotine use disorders, depressive disorders, and anxiety disorder after controlling for age, gender, and occupational status. Internet addiction was associated with suicidal plans even after controlling for psychiatric disorders and socio-demographic factors. This study showed that Internet addiction is highly associated with variety of different psychiatric disorders and suicidal plans. Therefore, clinicians should carefully evaluate them when treating addicted Internet users.

        Childhood Exposure to Psychological Trauma and the Risk of Suicide Attempts: The Modulating Effect of Psychiatric Disorders

        Objective-We examined whether childhood exposure to psychological trauma is associated with greater suicidality and whether specific psychiatric disorders modulate this association in a representative sample of Korean adults. Methods-The Korean version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview 2.1 was administered to 6,027 subjects aged 18–74 years. Subjects who experienced a traumatic event before the age of 18 years, the childhood-trauma-exposure group, were compared with controls without childhood trauma exposure. Results-Childhood exposure to psychological trauma was associated with lifetime suicidal ideation (OR=3.19, 95% CI=2.42–4.20), suicide plans (OR=4.15, 95% CI=2.68–6.43), and suicide attempts (OR=4.52, 95% CI=2.97–6.88). These associations weakened after further adjustment for any psychiatric disorders, but they were not eliminated. The risk of suicide attempts related to childhood trauma increased with the presence of a concurrent alcohol use, depressive, or eating disorder. Conclusion-In terms of clinical implications, patients with these disorders who have a history of childhood trauma should be carefully assessed for their suicide risk and aggressively treated for psychiatric disorders.

      • Suggestion on Minimizing Engineered Barrier System Degradation Based on Phenomenological Review for Copper Corrosion Mechanisms and Interaction of Resultant Product With Bentonite

        Copper, mainly used as a material for outer canister, generates various corrosion products under aerobic and anaerobic conditions in the operational and/or post-closure phases of the deep geological repository. These products could affect performance of engineering barrier system (EBS) through interaction with surrounding bentonite that makes up the buffer and backfill materials. Accordingly, in this study, we suggested research items to be conducted to minimize degradation of EBS due to copper corrosion products, based on the phenomenological review results for copper corrosion mechanisms and interaction between resultant product and bentonite in the deep geological disposal environment. During the post-closure phase, condition in the disposal facility changes form aerobic to anaerobic over time, and thereby, causes and products of copper corrosion vary. Under aerobic condition, copper corrosion is mainly induced by oxygen (O2) in the repository, chloride (Cl-) and carbonate (CO3 2-) ions from groundwater flowing into the facility, resulting in corrosion products such as cuprite (Cu2O), tenorite (CuO), atacamite (CuCl2·3Cu(OH)2) and malachite (Cu2CO3(OH)2). And, copper corrosion under anaerobic condition is primarily due to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and sulfate (SO4 2-) in groundwater flowing into the facility, leading to formation of chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS) as corrosion products. Depending on environment of the disposal facility, copper corrosion products are dissolved and ionized to Cu2+ in groundwater, and subsequently adsorbed on the nearby smectite. Then, it causes a cation exchange reaction with exchangeable cations in the interlayer of smectite. As a result of reviewing the previous experiments, it was confirmed that Cu2+-exchanged bentonite has a slightly reduced basal spacing and swelling capacity. From the results as above, there is a possibility that performance of EBS may be degraded due to copper corrosion products. To minimize its effect of degradation in the domestic facility, items to be further studied are as follows: (a) Method for reducing copper corrosion such as selection of appropriate material and structure for the canister, and (b) How to control dissolution of copper canister product into groundwater through predicting type and ionization process. The results of this study could be directly used to developing design concept of EBS for the domestic disposal facility and to establishing roadmap of future R&D programs.

      • A Review on How to Assess the Accessory Mineral Alteration in Bentonite in the Domestic Disposal Facility for High-level Radioactive Waste

        For the deep geological repository, engineering barrier system (EBS) is installed to restrict a release of radionuclide, groundwater infiltration, and unintentional human intrusion. Bentonite, mainly used as buffer and backfill materials, is composed of smectite and accessory minerals (e.g. salts, silica). During the post-closure phase, accessory minerals of bentonite may be redistributed through dissolution and precipitation due to thermal-hydraulic gradient formed by decay heat of spent nuclear fuel and groundwater inflow. It should be considered important since this cause canister corrosion and bentonite cementation, which consequently affect a performance of EBS. Accordingly, in this study, we first reviewed the analyses for the phenomenon carried out as part of construction permit and/or operating license applications in Sweden and Finland, and then summarized the prerequisite necessary to apply to the domestic disposal facility in the future. In previous studies in Sweden (SKB) and Finland (POSIVA), the accessory mineral alteration for the post-closure period was evaluated using TOUGHREACT, a kind of thermal-hydro-geochemical code. As a result of both analyses, it was found that anhydrite and calcite were precipitated at the canister surface, but the amount of calcite precipitate was insignificant. In addition, it was observed that precipitate of silica was negligible in POSIVA and there was a change in bentonite porosity due to precipitation of salts in SKB. Under the deep disposal conditions, the alteration of accessory minerals may have a meaningful influence on performance of the canister and buffer. However, for the backfill and closure, this is expected to be insignificant in that the thermal-hydraulic gradient inducing the alteration is low. As a result, for the performance assessment of domestic disposal facility, it is confirmed that a study on the alteration of accessory minerals in buffer bentonite is first required. However, in the study, the following data should reflect the domestic-specific characteristics: (a) detailed geometry of canister and buffer, (b) thermal and physical properties of canister, bentonite and host-rock in the disposal site, (c) geochemical parameters of bentonite, (d) initial composition of minerals and porewater in bentonite, (e) groundwater composition, and (f) decay heat of spent nuclear fuel in canister. It is presumed that insights from case studies for the accessory mineral alteration could be directly applied to the design and performance assessment of EBS, provided that input data specific to the domestic disposal facility is prepared for the assessment required.

        본 논문은 데이터마이닝을 통해 여러 여건별 신입사원의 1년 이내 퇴사 상황을 분석한다. 개개인의 이직에 대한 생각, 분야에 대한 불만족 이외에 개인의 상황 결혼 여부, 연령, 교육 계열 등과 같이 각자 다른 상황에 놓인 사람들의 데이터를 통해 여러 상황을 특성으로 설정하여 모델을 학습시킨다. 학습된 상황별 퇴사 여부를 분석하여 어떤 환경에 처한 사람이 빠른 시기에 퇴사할 확률이 높은지 연구하고 예방하여 빠른 시기에 퇴사하 는 직원들로 인한 기업의 피해가 점차 줄어들기를 바란다. This paper analyzes the resignation status of new employees within one year by various conditions through data mining. In addition to individual thoughts about job change and dissatisfaction with the field, the model is trained by setting various situations as characteristics through the data of people who are in different situations, such as individual circumstances, marital status, age, education, etc. It is hoped that the company"s damage caused by employees who leave early will gradually decrease by analyzing the learning situation and whether or not leaving the company is high, and by researching and preventing the high probability of people leaving early.

      • 발달 장애 아동의 행동 및 생리적 정보를 통한 딥러닝 기반 참여도 분류

        본 연구에서는 발달 장애 아동의 행동적, 생리적 정보를 통해 참여도를 분류할 수 있는 딥러닝 모델을 제시하였다. 발달 장애 아동 21 명을 대상으로 아동이 체육 기반 인터렉티브 콘텐츠를 수행할 때 아동의 생체 및 행동 데이터를 웨어러블 디바이스를 사용하여 수집하였다. 데이터는 가속도, 피부 전도도, 체온, 스켈레톤 데이터, 콘텐츠 수행의 성공/실패 여부, 그리고 참여도 총 6 종류의 데이터를 수집하였다. 본 연구에서 제시한 모델은 Convolution 1D 레이어 4 개와 FC 레이어 1 개로 이루어진 CNN 기반의 모델로, 모델 최적화를 위해 매개변수, 데이터 종류, 모델 구조 변화에 따른 정확도 비교를 진행, 최적의 모델을 도출하였다. 본 연구에서 제안한 모델이 기존 연구에 사용된 SVM, RF 등과 같은 모델과 비교하였을 때 뛰어난 성능을 보임을 확인하였으며 이후 실시간으로 아동의 참여도를 측정할 수 있는 도구를 개발할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

      • Stressful life events preceding the onset of depression in Asian patients with major depressive disorder

        <P><B>Background:</B></P><P>Previous studies have identified the significant role of stressful life events in the onset of depressive episodes. However, there is a paucity of cross-national studies on stressful life events that precede depression.</P><P><B>Aims:</B></P><P>We aimed to compare types of stressful life events associated with the onset of depressive episodes in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) in five Asian countries.</P><P><B>Method:</B></P><P>A total of 507 outpatients with MDD were recruited in China (<I>n</I> = 114), South Korea (<I>n</I> = 101), Malaysia (<I>n</I> = 90), Thailand (<I>n</I> = 103) and Taiwan (<I>n</I> = 99). All patients were assessed with the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview and the List of Threatening Experiences. The prevalence of each type of stressful life events was calculated and compared between each country.</P><P><B>Results:</B></P><P>The type of stressful life event that preceded the onset of a depressive episode differed between patients in China and Taiwan and those in South Korea, Malaysia and Thailand. Patients in China and Taiwan were less likely to report interpersonal relationship problems and occupational/financial problems than patients in South Korea, Malaysia and Thailand.</P><P><B>Conclusion:</B></P><P>Understanding the nature and basis of culturally determined susceptibilities to specific stressful life events is critical for establishing a policy of depression prevention and providing effective counseling services for depressed patients.</P>

        Development of microbial transglutaminase-crosslinked gelatin hydrogel gratings with structural stability under high-stretching conditions for induction of muscle hypertrophy

        Lack of physical activity and aging can lead to the loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. Many effortshave been made to align and differentiate myoblasts into myotubes in hydrogel gratings supported byelastic substrates, and then induce muscle hypertrophy in the myotubes by applying repetitive stretchingto the elastic substrate. However, muscle hypertrophy in vivo may require stretching at least 20%, whichconventional hydrogel gratings cannot withstand. In this study, we developed a novel method for patterningstructurally stable gelatin hydrogel gratings (GHG) on an elastic surface that can withstand highlevels of cyclic stretching without detachment or tearing during cell culturing. We attached gelatin to thesurface through aldehyde functionalization and crosslinking with microbial transglutaminase. GHG onthe PDMS surface withstood stretching at high ratios (15% and 20%) for several days. Myoblasts culturedon GHG differentiated into myotubes that were aligned along the grooves. When subjected to cyclicstretching at a ratio of 20%, these myotubes showed a significant increase in width, up to 57%. Thismethod represents a significant advance in the field, providing a valuable platform for studying theeffects of resistance exercise on muscle hypertrophy in vitro.
