Background: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a progressive inflammatory liver disease of unknown etiology that is reported to be a consequence of aberrant autoreactivity. Several studies which reported the acute presentation of AIH have different clinical course and histologic features. In this study, we compared acute presentation of AIH and chronic presentation of AIH. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with autoimmune hepatitis from January 2003 to June 2011 at Gachon University, Gil Hospital. A total of 29 patients were enrolled, 7 patients were diagnosed with acute presentation of AIH. Results: There was no difference between two group in age, gender, and score system of AIH. Patients with acute presentation had higher serum levels of total bilirubin, lower serum levels of albumin in clinical feature (p<0.05), and higher frequency of zone 3 necrosis in histologic feature. The cumulative incidental rate of the normalization of serum AST and ALT levels with prednisolone treatment was similar between patients with acute presentation and chronic presentation in clinical course. Conclusions: Higher AST, ALT and, bilirubin were clinical specific feature, and zone 3 necrosis is a histological characteristic of autoimmune hepatitis with acute presentation.

Eriocaulon sieboldianum (ES) is used in traditional oriental medicine for various medicinal purposes including headache, toothache, and inflammation. However, the anti-cancer effect of the ES is still not fully understood. In the present study, the human leukemia cell line HL-60 was used to characterize the apoptotic effects of ES. ES induced cytotoxicity of HL-60 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. ES induced the generation of reactive oxygen species, and the release of cytochrome c in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, we showed that ES-induced apoptosis was accompanied by activation of caspase-3. Taken together, our results demonstrate that ES possesses anti-cancer activity in HL-60 cells.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Cheonggukjang is a traditional fermented soybean paste with significant health-promoting effects. On the other hand, there have been insufficient studies on the safety and efficacy of Cheonggukjang, which is produced using traditional methods containing toxins and biogenic amines (BAs). This study compared the laxative effect of Cheonggukjang, containing high or low levels of toxins and BAs (HTBC or LTBC) in a loperamide (Lop)-induced constipation mouse model. MATERIALS/METHODS To induce constipation, Lop (5 mg/kg) was administered orally to ICR mice twice a day for 4 days, and the dose was increased to 8 mg/kg after a 3-day rest period. Cheonggukjang (500 mg/kg, HTBC, or LTBC respectively) was administered for four weeks before the Lop treatment. RESULTS The number of stools, fecal weight, water contents, gastrointestinal transit, and histological alterations were recovered significantly in the HTBC or LTBC groups. HTBC and LTBC administration did not induce significant changes in body weight, dietary intake, and behavior. The opioid-receptor downstream signaling pathway in colon tissues was also evaluated. The c-Kit, stem cell kinase, and mitogen-activated protein kinases subfamilies, including extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2, c-Jun N-terminal kinases, and p38, were all downregulated in the HTBC or LTBC-administered mice colon compared to the Lop group. CONCLUSION These results show that Cheonggukjang, containing high levels of toxins and BAs, have a similar laxative effect in a mouse model of Lop-induced constipation.

Lead sulfide (PbS) quantum dots (QDs) have been applied in the biomedical area because they offer an excellent platform for theragnostic applications. In order to comprehensively evaluate the biocompatibility of PbS QDs in human cells, we analyzed the exosomes secreted from cells because exosomes are released during cellular stress to convey signals to other cells and serve as a reservoir of enriched biomarkers. PbS QDs were synthesized and coated with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) to allow the particles to disperse in water. Exosomes were isolated from HEK293 cells treated with PbS–MPA at concentrations of 0 µg/mL, 5 µg/mL, and 50 µg/mL, and the exosomal expression levels of miRNAs and proteins were analyzed. As a result, five miRNAs and two proteins were proposed as specific exosomal biomarkers for the exposure of HEK293 cells to PbS–MPA. Based on the pathway analysis, the molecular signature of the exosomes suggested that PbS–MPA QDs had carcinogenic activity. The comet assay and expression of molecular markers, such as p53, interleukin (IL)-8, and C-X-C motif chemokine 5, indicated that DNA damage occurred in HEK293 cells following PbS–MPA exposure, which supported the carcinogenic activity of the particles. In addition, there was obvious intensification of miRNA expression signals in the exosomes compared with that of the parent cells, which suggested that exosomal biomarkers could be detected more sensitively than those of whole cellular extracts.

Folate and methionine metabolism plays an essential role in both DNA synthesis and methylation. Polymorphisms in the genes of the folate-dependent enzymes have been shown to affect disease susceptibility. We conducted a Korean population-based case-control study to evaluate whether genetic variation in folate metabolism may have a role in the risk of multiple myeloma (MM). The study subjects were 173 patients with MM and 1,700 population-based controls. The polymorphisms studied include methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677 C > T and 1298 A > C, methionine synthase (MS) 2756 A > G, methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) 66A > G, thymidylate synthase (TS) 28-bp repeat (2R→3R) and 6-bp deletion/insertion. MS 2756 AG genotypes were associated with a 1.5-fold lower risk of MM (OR = 0.66, 95%CI; 0.43–0.99, P = 0.047). There was no association between MTHFR C677T, A1298C, MTRR A66G, TS 2R→3R and 6-bp deletion/insertion polymorphisms and MM. These results suggest that MTHFR C677T, A1298C, MTRR A66G, TS 2R→3R, and 6-bp deletion/insertion do not significantly factor into the pathogenesis of MM in the Korean population, but that MS A2756G polymorphism may play an important role. MULTIPLE FLUX SYSTEMS AND THEIR WINDING ANGLES IN HALO CME SOURCE REGIONS
Kim, Hye- Rim,Moon, Y.J.,Jang, Min-Hwan,Kim, R.S.,Kim, Su-Jin,Choe, G.S. The Korean Astronomical Society 2008 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.41 No.6
Recently, Choe & Cheng (2002) have demonstrated that multiple magnetic flux systems with closed configurations can have more magnetic energy than the corresponding open magnetic fields. In relation to this issue, we have addressed two questions: (1) how much fraction of eruptive solar active regions shows multiple flux system features, and (2) what winding angle could be an eruption threshold. For this investigation, we have taken a sample of 105 front-side halo CMEs, which occurred from 1996 to 2001, and whose source regions were located near the disk center, for which magnetic polarities in SOHO/MDI magnetograms are clearly discernible. Examining their soft X-ray images taken by Yohkoh SXT in pre-eruption stages, we have classified these events into two groups: multiple flux system events and single flux system events. It is found that 74% (78/105) of the sample events show multiple flux system features. Comparing the field configuration of an active region with a numerical model, we have also found that the winding angle of the eruptive flux system is slightly above $1.5{\pi}$.

We design and analyze the n-channel junctionless fin-shaped field-effect transistor (JL FinFET) with 10-nm gate length and compare its performances with those of the conventional bulk-type fin-shaped FET (conventional bulk FinFET). A three-dimensional (3-D) device simulations were performed to optimize the device design parameters including the width ($W_{fin}$) and height ($H_{fin}$) of the fin as well as the channel doping concentration ($N_{ch}$). Based on the design optimization, the two devices were compared in terms of direct-current (DC) and radio-frequency (RF) characteristics. The results reveal that the JL FinFET has better subthreshold swing, and more effectively suppresses short-channel effects (SCEs) than the conventional bulk FinFET.
