Oxygen sensitization and incorporation of ternary lead chalcogenide PbSe1-xTex thin films was investigated with two methods: adding oxygen via PbO to the bulk source alloy and post-deposition oxygen annealing. Characterization of the composition, structure, and morphology of these films confirmed that they follow Vegard’s law for lattice parameter, and adding PbO to the source alloy did not impact the lattice parameter. However, adding PbO changed the electrical carrier properties observed in Hall effect measurements without forming any new oxide phase. Conversely, post-deposition annealing increased the lattice parameter due to oxygen incorporation into the lattice via interstitials in samples with appropriate grain boundary orientations. Morphological analysis revealed that PbSe0.8Te0.2 films demonstrated (100) texture, while PbSe0.6Te0.4 films demonstrated (111) texture with resulting grain boundary orientations more favorable to oxygen diffusion and incorporation. This varying oxygen incorporation from PbO source and oxygen annealing methods reveals trends that can lead to improved photodetector performance.
Resistance to Turnip Mosaic Virus in the Family Brassicaceae

Resistance to diseases caused by turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) in crop species of the family Brassicaceae has been studied extensively, especially in members of the genus Brassica. The variation in response observed on resistant and susceptible plants inoculated with different isolates of TuMV is due to a combination of the variation in the plant resistome and the variation in the virus genome. Here, we review the breadth of this variation, both at the level of variation in TuMV sequences, with one eye towards the phylogeny and evolution of the virus, and another eye towards the na- ture of the various responses observed in susceptible vs. different types of resistance responses. The analyses of the viral genomes allowed comparisons of pathotyped viruses on particular indicator hosts to produce clusters of host types, while the inclusion of phylogeny data and geographic location allowed the formation of the host/ geographic cluster groups, the derivation of both of which are presented here. Various studies on resistance determination in particular brassica crops sometimes led to further genetic studies, in many cases to include the mapping of genes, and in some cases to the actual identification of the genes. In addition to summarizing the results from such studies done in brassica crops, as well as in radish and Arabidopsis (the latter as a poten- tial source of candidate genes for brassica and radish), we also summarize work done using nonconventional approaches to obtaining resistance to TuMV.

Development and reproduction of the hymenopteran parasitoid Tachardiaephagus somervilli Mahdihassan (Chalcidoidea: Encyrtidae) were studied in its native range in Malaysia as part of a classical biological control program on Christmas Island (Indian Ocean). Tachardiaephagus somervilli was reared in the laboratory on its target host, the yellow lac scale, Tachardina aurantiaca Cockerell (Coccoidea: Kerriidae). The developmental time, survival, and sex ratio of F1 offspring from two different sources of F0 adults (field-collected F0 adults [=‘wild-caught’] and F0 adults that emerged from parasitized hosts in the laboratory [=‘laboratory-emerged’]) were compared. Sources of F0 adults did not affect the developmental time of either male or female offspring, which ranged from 23 to 25 days. Furthermore, per capita fecundity of laboratory-emerged F0 females was three times greater than wild-caught F0 females. The number of emerged F1 adults was positively related to host size. Tachardiaephagus somervilli has a short generation time relative to its female Tachardina hosts (~23 vs ~90 days), high fecundity (~16 emerged offspring per laboratory-emerged female) and can potentially complete 12–15 generations per year. This rearing protocol produced sufficient quantities of adult T. somervilli for the export and successful introduction to Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) for the biological control of invasive T. aurantiaca, with near 100% survival rates for both sexes during transit.

매년 국내 많은 기업 및 단체에서 정보시스템 관련 프로젝트를 수행하는데 막대한 비용을 지불하고 있으며, 2008 년 국내 소프트웨어 및 컴퓨터관련 서비스 생산액은 24 조 4 천억 원에 이르고 있다. 그 중 컴퓨터 관련 서비스(SI 및 SM 등) 비용이 약 20 조, 응용 SW 비용이 1 조 8 천억 원에 이르고 있으며[1], 많은 기업과 단체들이 필요에 의해 다양한 정보시스템을 도입하여 운영하고 있음에도 불구하고 그 성과에 대해서 만족하지 못하고, 또 다시 정보시스템을 도입하여 운영하는 등 많은 시행착오를 겪고 있다. 이것은 기업의 필요에 맞는 정보시스템을 계획하고 구축하는 것도 중요하지만 정보시스템의 활용수준을 평가하고 이슈 및 개선사항을 도출하여 잘 활용하는 것이 정보시스템 성공의 핵심적인 요소임을 간과하고 있기 때문이다. 본 연구의 목적은 현재 개발되어 운영중인 정보시스템의 응용 소프트웨어가 효율적으로 이용되는지에 대한 활용 수준 평가/진단을 위하여 정보시스템 활용도 평가에 대한 선행연구의 한계점을 살펴보고, 체계적이고 합리적인 응용 소프트웨어 활용도 평가 지표를 새롭게 제시하며, 국내 기업의 차세대 CRM 응용 소프트웨어 활용수준을 적용하고 평가하여 이슈 및 개선사항을 도출하는데 있다.
Hetero-Telechelic Dye-Labeled Polymer for Nanoparticle Decoration

<P>The synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) exhibiting one fluorescent dye (Texas Red) and one methyl disulfide end group is described. It is shown that the latter end group enabled the exchange of both oleic amine on gold nanoparticles (AuNP) and of oleic acid on CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QD), allowing for a phase transfer of both types of nanoparticles (NP) from hexane into dimethylformamide due to the solubility provided by the PMMA chains. For AuNP, a fluorescence quenching of the dye was found due to fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the dye to the AuNP, while QDs caused a fluorescence enhancement by FRET from the QD to the attached dyes. Due to the hetero-telechelic geometry of the polymer, the separation between NP and dye is governed by the end-to-end distance of the polymer.</P><P> <img src='wiley_img/10221336-2009-30-14-MARC200900254-gra001.gif' alt='wiley_img/10221336-2009-30-14-MARC200900254-gra001'> </P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>A PMMA with a methyl disulfide and a fluorescent dye end group, synthesized by the RAFT process was used to functionalize the surfaces of gold nanoparticles and of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots. 국내 많은 기업들이 CMMI(Capability Maturity Model Integration) 모델을 도입해서 소프트웨어 개발 프로세스를 구축 및 내재화 후 CMU(Carnegie Mellon University)의 SEI(Software Engineering Institute)로부터 인증을 받고 있지만, CMMI Maturity Level 3 이상 인증 받은 조직에서 조차도 프로젝트 지연 및 품질 문제가 자주 발생한다. 프로젝트 지연 문제는 개발 단계 이후에 대부분 발생되고 있으며, 이는 현저히 낮은 소프트웨어 개발 생산성의 영향 때문이다. 본 논문에서는 프로젝트 개발 생산성에 영향을 미치는 중요 요인을 분석하고, 이에 따른 작업의 가치를 결정하는 방법을 제시한다.

Drafting the Basic Provisions for a Bicoastal Chinese Peace Agreement: A Preliminary Proposal

The relationship between Taiwan and mainland China is "intranational interstate relations or transpolital relations," and signing a peace agreement seems necessary. There is a strong desire among the people of the Republic of China on Taiwan to maintain peace and tranquillity in the Taiwan Strait. The Taiwanese people also find that policies fostering the beliefs that "Chinese people won`t attack Chinese people" and "national reconciliation" match their basic interests in sharing Chinese sovereignty and gradually moving towards integration with the mainland people. After describing the peace agreement process between Taipei and Beijing, this research affirms that the core of a peace agreement should be arms control. In this paper an attempt is made to draft a bicoastal Chinese peace agreement from Taipei`s perspective. The draft agreement consists of a preamble and eleven provisions. Provision II, for example, states the following: "Under the principle of sharing sovereignty, both sides of the Taiwan Strait would not invade the other`s land (as opposed to territory) under jurisdiction nor interfere in each other`s internal affairs." As another example, Provision III stipulates, "To avoid military confrontation, a buffer zone will be designated by both sides of the Taiwan Strait." The final section discusses how the United States would regard bicoastal Chinese arms control. Taipei must make sure that the outcomes of any arms control agreement with the mainland not threaten Taiwan`s sovereign existence.
