      • Eye movements and brain oscillations to symbolic safety signs with different comprehensibility

        <P><B>Background</B></P><P>The aim of this study was to investigate eye movements and brain oscillations to symbolic safety signs with different comprehensibility.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Forty-two young adults participated in this study, and ten traffic symbols consisting of easy-to-comprehend and hard-to-comprehend signs were used as stimuli. During the sign comprehension test, real-time eye movements and spontaneous brain activity [electroencephalogram (EEG) data] were simultaneously recorded.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The comprehensibility level of symbolic traffic signs significantly affects eye movements and EEG spectral power. The harder to comprehend the sign is, the slower the blink rate, the larger the pupil diameter, and the longer the time to first fixation. Noticeable differences on EEG spectral power between easy-to-comprehend and hard-to-comprehend signs are observed in the prefrontal and visual cortex of the human brain.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Sign comprehensibility has significant effects on real-time nonintrusive eye movements and brain oscillations. These findings demonstrate the potential to integrate physiological measures from eye movements and brain oscillations with existing evaluation methods in assessing the comprehensibility of symbolic safety signs.</P>

        <P>Practitioner Summary: There is no general guideline on which fall risk assessment tools are suitable for community-dwelling Korean older women. This study compared seven widely used assessment tools in terms of validity and practicality. Results suggested that the short Falls Efficacy Scale is the most suitable tool, followed by Berg Balance Scale.</P>

      • A preliminary study on dynamic balance performances during normal walking with high-heeled shoes

        A preliminary study on investigating the effects of high-heeled shoes on wearers’ dynamic balance performances during normal walking was conducted with 5 healthy female adults. Motion capture and F-scan systems were used to record the biomechanical data and several parameters including vertical position of center of body mass (COM), ankle joint angles and knee joint angles were calculated afterwards. The experimental data at flat shoes and high-heeled shoes were compared and the results showed that wearing high-heeled shoes would result in significantly smaller RMS of time series COM height and restrict the flexibility of lower limbs. This suggested human dynamic balance performance became worse with high-heeled shoes.

      • Validity and Reliability of Upper Limb Functional Assessment Using the Microsoft Kinect V2 Sensor

        <P><B>Objective</B></P><P> To quantify the concurrent accuracy and the test-retest reliability of a Kinect V2-based upper limb functional assessment system. </P><P><B>Approach</B></P><P> Ten healthy males performed a series of upper limb movements, which were measured concurrently with Kinect V2 and the Vicon motion capture system (gold standard). Each participant attended two testing sessions, seven days apart. Four tasks were performed including hand to contralateral shoulder, hand to mouth, combing hair, and hand to back pocket. Upper limb kinematics were calculated using our developed kinematic model and the UWA model for Kinect V2 and Vicon. The interdevice coefficient of multiple correlation (CMC) and the root mean squared error (RMSE) were used to evaluate the validity of the kinematic waveforms. Mean absolute bias and Pearson's <I>r</I> correlation were used to evaluate the validity of the angles at the points of target achieved (PTA) and the range of motion (ROM). The intersession CMC and RMSE and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used to assess the test-retest reliability of Kinect V2. </P><P><B>Main Results</B></P><P> Both validity and reliability are found to be task-dependent and plane-dependent. Kinect V2 had good accuracy in measuring shoulder and elbow flexion/extension angular waveforms (CMC > 0.87), moderate accuracy of measuring shoulder adduction/abduction angular waveforms (CMC = 0.69-0.82), and poor accuracy of measuring shoulder internal/external angles (CMC < 0.6). We also found high test-retest reliability of Kinect V2 in most of the upper limb angular waveforms (CMC = 0.75-0.99), angles at the PTA (ICC = 0.65-0.91), and the ROM (ICC = 0.68-0.96). </P><P><B>Significance</B></P><P> Kinect V2 has great potential as a low-cost, easy implemented device for assessing upper limb angular waveforms when performing functional tasks. The system is suitable for assessing relative within-person change in upper limb motions over time, such as disease progression or improvement due to intervention.</P>

      • Effects of high heeled shoes on limits of stability in young women

        High heeled shoes have been associated with the increase of the risk of falls. An experimental study on examining the effects of wearing high heeled shoes on stability limits was conducted. Seven young females participated in the Limit of stability (LOS) test in the NeuroCom PRO Balance Master System. Reaction time, movement velocity, endpoint excursions, maximum excursions and directional control obtained from the LOS test were used to determine the maximum distance a person can lean in a given direction without stepping or losing balance. The experimental results showed that endpoint excursions and maximum excursions, expressed as percentages of the limits of stability, decreased significantly while participants were standing in high heeled shoes. The results suggested that standing in high heeled shoes will lessen an individual’s ability to retain a postural control when their balance is destabilized outside area of control, thus decreasing dynamic balance ability.

        Comprehensibility of Newly Introduced Water-sport Prohibitive Signs in Korea by Koreans and Westerners

        Objective: The goal of this study is to evaluate the comprehensibility of the newly introduced water-sport prohibitive signs by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE, later merged into the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy) among Koreans and westerners, and to check whether the comprehensibility is affected by cultural differences. Background: The Ministry of Knowledge Economy had newly introduced fourteen water-sport prohibitive signs at the end of 2011 to alert people to potentially dangerous situations. However, no studies had been found so far to review or assess their comprehensibility. Method: Comprehensibility tests of fourteen water-sport prohibitive signs were conducted with forty Koreans and forty Westerners in two sequential sessions. In session I, participants were asked to guess the meaning of each sign verbally in an open-ended test. In session II, participants were encouraged to provide feedback for each sign after its intended meaning was given. Results: Only two out of fourteen signs satisfied the comprehension rate (67%) recommended by ISO standard for both groups (Koreans and Westerners). Cultural difference between Koreans and westerners significantly affect the comprehension rates of the investigated signs, and Westerners exhibit better overall comprehension than Koreans. Five poorly comprehended signs for both Korean and Western groups were identified. Conclusion: The recently introduced water-sport prohibitive warning signs by MKE still need a lot of improvements in order to be implemented nationally or internationally. There were significant differences in the signs" comprehensibility between Koreans and westerners. Application: The findings may serve as a useful input for researchers and watersport sign designers in creating easy-to-comprehend safety signs.
