A Study of New Penning gas for the improvement of the luminance and luminous efficiency in ac-PDPs

In order to improve the luminance efficiency and the luminance and to achieve low firing voltages and sustain voltages, we studied the effect of adding a small amount of D2 (deuterium) to conventional gases [Ne-Xe (8 %)]. We measured the firing voltage, the sustain voltage, the luminance, and the luminous efficiency for various amounts of D2, added to Ne-Xe gas. The addition of an extremely small amount of D2 increased the number of electrons which improved the Xe density (147 nm) and the Xe density (173 nm). As a result, the luminance and the luminous efficiency increased, and the firing voltage and the sustain voltage decreased.

<P>Ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation causes skin damage and inflammation by inducing the secretion of various cytokines, which are immune regulators produced by cells. To prevent skin inflammation, keratinocytes that have been irreversibly damaged by UVB must be eliminated through apoptosis. Ixeris dentata (I.?dentata) (family Asteraceae) is a perennial medicinal herb indigenous to Korea. It is used in Korea, China and Japan to treat indigestion, pneumonia, diabetes, hepatitis, contusions and tumors. Guaiane-type sesquiterpene lactones were isolated from the whole extract of I.?dentata. This led to the isolation of the anti-inflammatory sesquiterpene lactone compound tectroside (TES), which was tested on a human keratinocyte cell line. To determine the anti-inflammatory effects of TES, we examined its influence on UVB-induced pro-inflammatory cytokine production in human keratinocytes (HaCaT cells) by observing these cells in the presence or absence of TES. In the present study, pro-inflammatory cytokine production was determined by performing enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis to evaluate the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). TES inhibited UVB-induced production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, TES inhibited the expression of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and the phosphorylation of c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) MAPKs, suggesting that it inhibits the secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-8 and COX-2 expression by blocking MAPK phosphorylation. These results suggest that TES can potentially protect against UVB-induced skin inflammation.</P>

Recently, Plasma Display Panel(PDP) has been in the spotlight as one of the next generation flat-panel-display device. However, it has several drawbacks like the low contrast ratio and the low luminance. In this study, a new address waveform is suggested to improve the priming effect and contrast ratio at the address period in the Address Display period Separated(ADS) method. We modified waveform, instead of a conventional waveform, to an address period, for operating on the Plasma Display Panels, which used the conventional gas [He-Ne-Xe〕. When the ramp pulse is added to the address period at the sustain electrode, it is improved on the priming effect and contrast ratio.

<P>Human skin is the first line of defense for the protection of the internal organs of the body from different stimuli. Ultraviolet B (UVB), one of the harmful radiations for skin, is widely known to induce abnormally increased cytokine release from keratinocytes leading to inflammatory skin disorders. IL-6 and IL-8 induce an acute-phase response and stimulate leukocyte infiltration in the skin. Previous studies have shown that chronic exposure to UVB radiation increases cyclooxygenase-2 (COX?2) expression through various cell signaling pathways, resulting in skin cancer. Recent studies have shown that the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK), and p38 MAPK is strongly correlated with acute inflammation and development of skin cancer caused by an increased expression of COX-2. Ixerisoside A (IXA) is an active constituent of Ixeris dentata of the Compositae (Asteraceae) family. The effect of IXA on skin inflammation has yet to be elucidated. To determine the anti-inflammatory effects of IXA, we examined its effect on UVB-induced pro-inflammatory cytokine production in human keratinocytes (HaCaT cells) by observing these cells in the presence or absence of IXA. In this study, pro-inflammatory cytokine production was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rt-pcr), and western blot analysis to evaluate the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). IXA inhibited UVB-induced production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-8 in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, IXA inhibited the expression of COX-2, ERK, JNK, and p38 MAPKs, indicating that the secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-8, and COX-2 expression was inhibited by blocking MAPK phosphorylation. These results indicated that IXA potentially protects against UVB-induced skin inflammation.</P>
A Study of the Discharge Characteristics of a New Penning Gas in ac-PDPs

In this paper, the effects of the addition of deuterium (D2) to a conventional gas mixture [Ne(92 %)-Xe(8 %) or He(70 %)-Ne(27 %)-Xe(3 %)] on the discharge characteristics were investigated at the high pressure. Our results show improvement in the voltage margin, the wall charge, the jitter, and the discharge time lag. Also, when the D2 added to conventional gas mixture (Ne-Xe or He-Ne- Xe) was 0.025 %, the addressing time was reduced and the gas discharge of the cell was stable. We can narrow the address period in operating PDPs without mis-writing, so high-speed addressing in order to implement a high definition such as high-definition TV (HDTV) is possible.=M_CQR

As a driving method of AC-PDP, Address-Display Separated(ADS) driving has been widely adopted for its simple architecture and low discharge failure rate. However, a high definition like a HDTV has defect of long addressing time by reason of a number of pixels. Priming effect isn't fully sustained because of long addressing time during the address period. Therefore, it has different wall charge and luminance of each addressing time in the sustain period. In this study, we suggest a new driving waveform on the address period to improve these defects. We applied a ramp waveform, instead of a square waveform, to an address period in ADS, for operating on the AC-PDP, which used the conventional gas [He-Ne-Xe]. When the ramp waveform is applied to the address period, we experimented for uniform wall charge and the improved luminance by sustained Priming effect at each addressing time in the sustain period.
