A 42 nJ/Conversion On-Demand State-of-Charge Indicator for Miniature IoT Li-Ion Batteries

<P>An energy-efficient state-of-charge (SOC) indication algorithm and integrated system for low-power wireless sensor nodes with the miniature Internet of Things (IoT) batteries are introduced in this paper. Based on the key findings that the miniature Li-ion batteries exhibit a fast response to the battery current transient, we propose an instantaneous linear extrapolation (ILE) algorithm and circuit system based on the ILE algorithm allowing accurate on-demand estimation of SOC. Due to the on-demand operation, an always-ON current integration is avoided, reducing power and energy consumption by several orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the proposed SOC indicator does not require a battery disconnection from the load, ensuring continuous operation of the applications. The system is implemented in a 180-nm CMOS technology. The power consumption is 42 nW, and maximum SOC indication error is 1.7%. The minimum applicable battery capacity is as low as <TEX>$2~\mu $</TEX>Ah.</P>

<P>Programmability is one of the most significant advantages of a digital phase-locked loop (PLL) compared with a charge-pump PLL. In this paper, a digital PLL that extends programmability to include noise is introduced. A digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) using a switched capacitor for frequency feedback is proposed to maintain a constant figure of merit while reconfiguring its noise performance. The proposed DCO offers an accurate and linear frequency tuning curve that is insensitive to environmental changes. A noise detection circuit using the statistical property of a bang-bang phase and frequency detector is proposed to autonomously adjust the output noise level depending on the noise specification. A prototype design is fabricated in a 28-nm FDSOI process. The integrated phase noise of the proposed PLL can be configured from 2.5 to 15 ps, while the power consumption ranges from 1.7 to 5 mW.</P>

<P>This paper presents a new energy-efficient ring oscillator collapse-based comparator, named edge-pursuit comparator (EPC). This comparator automatically adjusts the performance by changing the comparison energy according to its input difference without any control, eliminating unnecessary energy spent on coarse comparisons. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the EPC in the phase domain shows improved energy efficiency over conventional comparators even without energy scaling, and wider resolution tuning capability with small load capacitance and area. The EPC is used in a successive-approximation-register analog-to-digital converter (SAR ADC) design, which supplements a 10 b differential coarse capacitive digital-to-analog converter (CDAC) with a 5 b common-mode CDAC. This offers an additional 5 b of resolution with common mode to differential gain tuning that improves linearity by reducing the effect of switch parasitic capacitance. A test chip fabricated in 40 nm CMOS shows 74.12 dB signal-to-noise and distortion ratio and 173.4 dB Schreier Figure-of-Merit. With the full ADC consuming 1.17 mu W, the comparator consumes 104 nW, which is only 8.9% of the full ADC power, proving the comparator's energy efficiency.</P>

The Cucurbitaceae (Cucurbits) family has 825 species in 118 genera, predominantly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. Major cucurbit crops including cucumber (Cucumis sativa), melon (Cucumis melo), watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), and squash/pumpkin (Cucumis pepo) are important in the human diet and the rural economy. In recent years, large amount of genome information has been analyzed and reported in major cucurbit crops, such as cucumber, melon, and watermelon. To construct high quality reference genome sequence of Korean melon (Chamoe), genomic and transcriptomic sequence data were generated from Korean native (Gotgam) and elite (SW3) Chamoe inbred line using Illumina HiSeq2000 platform. In case of genome analysis, 4,773 scaffolds covering 98% of Gotgam Chamoe were assembled through de novo genome assembly and reference-based assembly. Large number of simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected between two inbred lines and these markers were used for construction of genetic maps and discrimination of cultivars or species. In addition, genome sequence of other Chamoe and melon including Chang Bougi, Sakata’s Sweet, Prescott Fond Blanc and Banana melon will be constructed by de novo genome analysis. Genetic markers of these will also be detected and used for marker-assisted breeding and further analysis to investigate major traits of Chamoe, fruit color and flesh color. In conclusion, the newly constructed reference genome will provide genome information for comparative genomics and breeding of other cucurbit crops.
청년 구직자의 취업 달성 요인에 관한 연구: 공공 고용서비스 알선대상자를 중심으로

이 연구는 공공 고용서비스를 이용하여 구직 활동을 한 청년의 취업 달성 요인을 탐색하기 위해 2015년에 고용센터, 지방정부 일자리지원기관, 새일센터와 같은 공공 고용서비스 기관의 취업 알선 서비스를 받은 청년 구직자를 대상으로 분석했다. 분석결과 취업 달성에 영향을 미치는 요인으로서 인구통계학적 요인으로는 남성, 학력이 낮은 집단, 구직자의 거주지와 희망 근무지가 일치하는 집단일수록 취업에 성공할 확률이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 구직 특성 요인으로는 구직 등록 목적이 순수취업인 구직자가 그렇지 않은 집단에 비해 취업 성공 확률이 높은 것으로 밝혀졌다. 또한, 경력직보다는 신규 입사를 희망하는 구직자, 희망임금이 낮은 구직자가 취업이 될 확률이 높은 것으로 분석되었다. 한편, 고용센터를 이용하여 구직활동을 한 청년이 지방정부 일자리기관을 이용한 청년보다 취업 가능성이 큰 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 분석 결과를 통해, 현재 우리나라 공공 고용서비스가 여전히 저임금·저숙련 일자리에 집중되어서 갈수록 확대되는 청년의 공공고용서비스 수요에 부합하지 못하고 있다는 것을 파악할 수 있다. 또한, 최근 지방정부의 청년 고용지원 확대에도 불구하고 중앙정부의 고용서비스보다 취업지원 효과는 상대적으로 낮다는 것을 파악할 수 있다. 본 연구의 함의는 청년이 선호하는 지역사회의 양질의 일자리 발굴에 강점을 가진 지방정부 일자리기관과 고용서비스 분야의 전문성이 높은 고용센터가 민간기관과의 기능을 분담하고 프로그램 연계를 통한 청년 공공 고용서비스 전달체계의 필요성을 제기한다는 점이다. This study aims to analyze the determinants of youth employment, thereby contributing to improving the public system for delivering youth employment services. This study is composed of the following parts. Firstly, the authors conduct a study of 176,534 youth looking for a job through a public employment service center. Secondly, the authors construct the determinants of youth employment based on theories of employment. In the last place, the authors analyze the determinants through binary logistic regression analysis. There were two main results from the binary logistic regression analysis analyzing the determinants of youth employment. First, socio-demographic variables such as sex, educational background, and the region increase the probability of youth employment. Secondly, variables related to job-seeking characteristics such as public employment centers, employment type (experienced/new), expected working area, and desired salary increase the probability of youth employment. It can be concluded on the basis of the results of this research that public employment services need to be expanded for the youth job-seekers. A linkage is needed between the central and local government to meet the increasing demands of youth job-seekers.
De Novo Transcriptome Analysis of Cucumis melo L. var. makuwa

Oriental melon (Cucumis melo L. var. makuwa) is one of six subspecies of melon and is cultivated widely in East Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. Although oriental melon is economically valuable in Asia and is genetically distinct from other subspecies, few reports of genome-scale research on oriental melon have been published. We generated 30.5 and 36.8 Gb of raw RNA sequence data from the female and male flowers, leaves, roots, and fruit of two oriental melon varieties, Korean landrace (KM) and Breeding line of NongWoo Bio Co. (NW), respectively. From the raw reads, 64,998 transcripts from KM and 100,234 transcripts from NW were de novo assembled. The assembled transcripts were used to identify molecular markers (e.g., single-nucleotide polymorphisms and simple sequence repeats), detect tissue-specific expressed genes, and construct a genetic linkage map. In total, 234 single-nucleotide polymorphisms and 25 simple sequence repeats were screened from 7,871 and 8,052 candidates, respectively, between the KM and NW varieties and used for construction of a genetic map with 94 F2 population specimens. The genetic linkage map consisted of 12 linkage groups, and 248 markers were assigned. These transcriptome and molecular marker data provide information useful for molecular breeding of oriental melon and further comparative studies of the Cucurbitaceae family.
MBus: A Fully Synthesizable Low-power Portable Interconnect Bus for Millimeter-scale Sensor Systems

This paper presents a fully synthesizable low power interconnect bus for millimeter-scale wireless sensor nodes. A segmented ring bus topology minimizes the required chip real estate with low input/output pad count for ultra-small form factors. By avoiding the conventional open drain-based solution, the bus can be fully synthesizable. Low power is achieved by obviating a need for local oscillators in member nodes. Also, aggressive power gating allows low-power standby mode with only 53 gates powered on. An integrated wakeup scheme is compatible with a power management unit that has nW standby mode. A 3-module system including the bus is fabricated in a 180 nm process. The entire system consumes 8 nW in standby mode, and the bus achieves 17.5 pJ/bit/chip.
