Holographic Grating by Means of Polymer Liquid Crystals
Ikeda, Tomiki,Yoneyama, Satoshi,Yamamoto, Takahiro,Hasegawa, Makoto The Korean Infomation Display Society 2001 Journal of information display Vol.2 No.3
Formation of intensity gratings was studied with two s-polarized (s+s) configuration in polymer liquid crystals (PLCs) containing a photochromic moiety (azobenzene) and a mesogenic unit (tolane, T-AB; cyanobiphenyl, CB-AB) by photoinduced alignment of PLCs. Remarkable differences were observed between the two PLCs. T-AB showed a faster response to the change in the diffraction intensity than CB-AB. In T-AB, alignment change took place faster than that of CB-AB. By introducing the tolane unit at the side chain, we obtained a diffraction efficiency of 30 % in the Raman-Nath regime

Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is considered complex genetic and tissue-specific autoimmune disease. We recently discovered a nonsynonymous variant in the coiled-coil alphahelical rod protein 1 (CCHCR1) gene within the AA risk haplotype. And a water avoidance stress test on CCHCR1 knockout mice induced AA-like lesions. Objective: To investigate the difference clinical findings of AA in patients with the CCHCR1 variant and without. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the data from 142 AA patients. Among these patients, 20 (14.1%) had a variant of CCHCR1. We evaluated the sex distribution of the patients, age at onset, distribution of the clinical types, prevalence of a positive family history of AA, prevalence of association of AA with atopic dermatitis, response to steroid therapy, and recurrence rate. We used multivariate logistic regression analysis and Fisher’s exact test for statistical analysis. We also investigate electron microscopic observations of hair samples with the CCHCR1 variant and without. Results: The results showed a significant correlation between the CCHCR1 variant and the recurrence rate compared with the variant-negative group (p=0.0072). Electron microscopy revealed abnormalities in the hair shaft structure and hair cuticle in patients with the CCHCR1 variant (p=0.00174). Conclusion: Our results suggest that AA with CCHCR1 variant is clinically characterized by a high recurrence rate and hair morphological abnormality

Objective: The survival benefits of retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy (RLNA) for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) remain controversial because clinical behaviors differ among subtypes. The purpose of the present study was to clarify whether RLNA increases the survival rate of advanced high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC). Methods: This was a retrospective cohort analysis of 3,227 patients with EOC treated between 1986 and 2017 at 14 institutions. Among them, 335 patients with stage IIB-IV HGSC who underwent optimal cytoreduction (residual tumor of <1 cm) were included. Patients were divided into the RLNA group (n=170) and non-RLNA group (n=165). All pathological slides were assessed based on a central pathological review. Oncologic outcomes were compared between the two groups in the original and weighted cohorts adjusted with the inverse probability of treatment weighting. Results: The median observation period was 49.8 (0.5–241.5) months. Overall, 219 (65%) out of 335 patients had recurrence or progression, while 146 (44%) died of the disease. In the original cohort, RLNA was a significant prognostic factor for longer progression-free survival (PFS) (hazard ratio [HR]=0.741; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.558–0.985) and overall survival (OS) (HR=0.652; 95% CI=0.459–0.927). In the weighted cohort in which all variables were well balanced as standardized differences decreased, RLNA was also a significant prognostic factor for more favorable oncologic outcomes (PFS, adjusted HR=0.742; 95% CI=0.613–0.899) and OS, adjusted HR=0.620; 95% CI=0.488–0.787). Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that RLNA for stage III-IV HGSC with no residual tumor after primary debulking surgery contributed to better oncologic outcomes.
Cytoplasmic destruction of p53 by the endoplasmic reticulum-resident ubiquitin ligase ‘Synoviolin’

Synoviolin, also called HRD1, is an E3 ubiquitin ligase and is implicated in endoplasmic reticulum -associated degradation. In mammals, Synoviolin plays crucial roles in various physiological and pathological processes, including embryogenesis and the pathogenesis of arthropathy. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms of Synoviolin in these actions. To clarify these issues, we analyzed the profile of protein expression in synoviolin-null cells. Here, we report that Synoviolin targets tumor suppressor gene p53 for ubiquitination. Synoviolin sequestrated and metabolized p53 in the cytoplasm and negatively regulated its cellular level and biological functions, including transcription, cell cycle regulation and apoptosis. Furthermore, these p53 regulatory functions of Synoviolin were irrelevant to other E3 ubiquitin ligases for p53, such as MDM2, Pirh2 and Cop1, which form autoregulatory feedback loops. Our results provide novel insights into p53 signaling mediated by Synoviolin.

Background/Aims: Noninvasive liver fibrosis evaluation was performed in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We used a quantitative method based on the he-patic volume acquired from gadoxetate disodium-enhanced (Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for diagnosing advanced fibrosis in patients with NAFLD. Methods: A total of 130 patients who were diagnosed with NAFLD and underwent Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI were retrospectively included. Histological data were available for 118 patients. Hepatic volumetric parameters, including the left hepatic lobe to right hepatic lobe volume ratio (L/R ratio), were measured. The usefulness of the L/R ratio for diag-nosing fibrosis ≥F3-4 and F4 was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve. Multiple regression analysis was performed to identify vari-ables (age, body mass index, serum fibrosis markers, and histological features) that were associated with the L/R ratio. Results: The L/R ratio demonstrated good performance in differentiating advanced fibrosis (AUROC, 0.80; 95% confi-dence interval, 0.72 to 0.88) from cirrhosis (AUROC, 0.87; 95% confidence interval, 0.75 to 0.99). Multiple regression analysis showed that only fibrosis was significantly associat-ed with the L/R ratio (coefficient, 0.121; p<0.0001). Conclu-sions: The L/R ratio, which is not influenced by pathologi-cal parameters other than fibrosis, is useful for diagnosing cirrhosis in patients with NAFLD. (Gut Liver 2017;11:674- 683)

We present the {\it AKARI} far-infrared (FIR) all-sky maps and describe its characteristics, calibration accuracy and scientific capabilities. The {\it AKARI} FIR survey has covered 97\% of the whole sky in four photometric bands, which cover continuously 50--180 micron with band central wavelengths of 65, 90, 140, and 160 microns. The data have been publicly released in 2014 \citep{2015PASJ...67...50D} with improved data quality that have been achieved since the last internal data release \citep{2012PKAS...27..111D}. The accuracy of the absolute intensity is $\leq10$\% for the brighter regions. Quantitative analysis of the relative intensity accuracy and its dependence upon spatial scan numbers has been carried out. The data for the first time reveal the whole sky distribution ofinterstellar matter with arcminute-scale spatial resolutions at the peakof dust continuum emission, enabling us to investigate large-scaledistribution of interstellar medium in great detail. The filamentarystructure covering the whole sky is well traced by the all-sky maps. We describe advantages of the AKARI FIR all-sky maps for the study of interstellar matter comparing to other observational data.
