<P>Petroleum-independent and economically viable production of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (HMF) from industrially supplied high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) using a wood powder-derived carbonaceous solid acid in an ethylene glycol (EG)-based solvent was developed. EG-based solvents were preferable to the dehydration of HFCS into HMF owing to stabilizing reversible intermediates. In addition, low boiling EG-based solvents were readily removed to isolate HMF. As a parametric study on the dehydration of HFCS into HMF in an EG-based solvent, effects of reaction temperature, initial concentration of fructose, catalyst dosage, and water content on reaction rate and HMF yield were investigated. Sulfonated amorphous carbonaceous materials (∼0.7 mmol of SO<SUB>3</SUB>H/g) were prepared from wood powder via incomplete hydrothermal carbonization and then sulfonization, and they were applied to the dehydration of HFCS in glyme, affording HMF in 80% yield. It was also found that a prolonged reaction enabled further conversion of HMF into levulinic acid in a highly selective manner.</P>

고구마는 21세기 인류가 당면한 식량, 에너지, 환경, 보건문제 등을 해결하는 21세기 구원투수로 등장하고 있다. 고구마는 식량자원 뿐만 아니라 바이오에탄올, 기능성 사료, 항산화물질 등 고부가가치소재를 생산하는 생체반응기로 평가된다. 미국 공익과학단체(The nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest, CSPI)는 고구마가 저분자항산화물질, 식이섬유, 칼륨 등을 고함유하고 있는 고구마를 몸에 좋은 10대 슈퍼식품 가운데 하나로 선정하였다. 미국 농무부는 고구마를 전분작물 가운데 식량수급에 영향을 최소화하는 척박한 토양에 가장 적합한 바이오에너지작물로 평가하였다. UN 식량농업기구는 2050년에 세계인구가 97억 명이 될 것이며 지금 추세로 식량을 사용하면 2050년에는 지금의 1.7배의 식량이 필요하다고 전망했다. 어떻게 미래 식량위기를 극복할 것인가? 이러한 측면에서 척박한 토양에서도 어느 정도 수량을 보장하는 고구마가 지구가 당면한 제반 문제를 해결할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 본 논문에서는 세계 고구마 유전자원과 생산현황을 살펴보고, 글로벌 식량자원 및 고부가가치 바이오소재 측면에서 새로운 고구마의 북방로드 개척 및 상업적 대량재배를 위한 선결과제를 기술하고자 한다. Sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam] represents an attractive starch crop that can be used to facilitate solving global food and environmental problems in the $21^{st}$ century. It can be used as industrial bioreactors to produce various high value-added materials, including bio-ethanol, functional feed, antioxidants, as well as food resources. The non-profit Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) announced sweetpotato as one of the ten 'super foods' for better health, since it contains high levels of low molecular weight antioxidants such as vitamin-C, vitamin-E and carotenoids, as well as dietary fiber and potassium. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) also reported that sweetpotato is the best bioenergy crop among starch crops on marginal lands, that does not affect food security. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimated that world population in 2050 will be 9.7 billion, and require approximately 1.7 times more food than today. In this respect, sweetpotato will be a solution to solving problems such as food, energy, health, and environment facing the globe in the $21^{st}$ century. In this paper, the current status of resources, and cultivation of sweetpotato in the world was first described. Development of a new northern route of the sweetpotato and its prior tasks of large scale cultivation of sweetpotato, were also described in terms of global food security, and production of high-value added biomaterials.
Fragment productions in DJBUU and SQMD: comparative study

We study 208Pb + 40,48Ca reactions at Ebeam = 50, 100 AMeV with DJBUU and SQMD transport codes. We compare the large primary fragments from the two codes at the end of the simulation time. We observe that overall the two models produce similar fragments. However, we see a noticeable diference between DJBUU and SQMD at Ebeam = 100 AMeV with the impact parameter b = 0 fm and discuss this diference in terms of the diference in the equation of state adopted in the two models and the diference in stability inherent to the BUU-type and QMD-type models.
Self-assembled nanoparticles comprising aptide–SN38 conjugates for use in targeted cancer therapy

<P>Self-assembled nanoparticles (NPs) have been intensively utilized as cancer drug delivery carriers because hydrophobic anticancer drugs may be efficiently loaded into the particle cores. In this study, we synthesized and evaluated the therapeutic index of self-assembled NPs chemically conjugated to a fibronectin extra domain B-specific peptide (APT<SUB>EDB</SUB>) and an anticancer agent SN38. The APT<SUB>EDB</SUB>–SN38 formed self-assembled structures with a diameter of 58?±?3 nm in an aqueous solution and displayed excellent drug loading, solubility, and stability properties. A pharmacokinetic study revealed that the blood circulation half-life of SN38 following injection of the APT<SUB>EDB</SUB>–SN38 NPs was markedly higher than that of the small molecule CPT-11. The APT<SUB>EDB</SUB>–SN38 NPs delivered SN38 to tumor sites by both passive and active targeting. Finally, the APT<SUB>EDB</SUB>–SN38 NPs exhibited potent antitumor activities and low toxicities against EDB-expressing tumors (LLC, U87MG) in mice. This system merits further preclinical and clinical investigations for SN38 delivery.</P>
Bilirubin nanoparticle preconditioning protects against hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) remains a major concern in liver transplantation and resection, despite continuing efforts to prevent it. Accumulating evidence suggests that bilirubin possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties. However, despite obvious potential health benefits of bilirubin, its clinical applications are limited by its poor solubility. We recently developed bilirubin nanoparticles (BRNPs) consisting of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-conjugated bilirubin. Here, we sought to investigate whether BRNPs protect against IRI in the liver by preventing oxidative stress. BRNPs exerted potent antioxidant and anti-apoptotic activity in primary hepatocytes exposed to hydrogen peroxide, a precursor of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In a model of hepatic IRI in mice, BRNP preconditioning exerted profound protective effects against hepatocellular injury by reducing oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory cytokine production, and recruitment of neutrophils. They also preferentially accumulated in IRI-induced inflammatory lesions. Collectively, our findings indicate that BRNP preconditioning provides a simple and safe approach that can be easily monitored in the blood like endogenous bilirubin, and could be a promising strategy to protect against IRI in a clinical setting.</P>
